Streets of Fire 1984 Movie. Universal Studios Inc. Starring Diane Lane,Michael Pare,Willem Dafoe. A Great Piece of Musical Movie Last Over 30 Years & Still...
I bought this album when the film first came out. Used to play the album & in particular this song on the spare CB channel, enroute home to see my girl - all the way from Dover. So she would know I was on my way. My rig was a little 'different' from the normal set-ups you could buy over here in UK, at the time. LOL
I can't get enough of this song.. I know I've played it over a thousand times. Jim Steinman is a genious and thank you to Holly Sherwood for the incredible vocals..
I don't f***g believe I found this song ! I was looking for it for 30 years ! Like a long lost love after having watched the movie. I was 17 back then. Please pardon the language but this is incredible. 80's forever no matter what the cost was ! When cost didn't count.
Jim Steinman wrote and produced this song. He is known for 'Total Eclispe of the Heart' sung by Bonnie Tyler and 'I'd do anything for love but I won't do that' by Meat Loaf. Steinman's music is classic and second to none!
I love the vocals of Holly Sherwood! She is just as beautiful as Diane Lane, too. It is time she received credit for her contribution to this song. Smiles :))
Amazing! I wish they still made movies and music like this. Truly one of the most under rated films and songs of all time. The 80's left us this beautiful music, thanks.
She went from an underrated movie like this to an overrated Superhero Movie that just recently came out in theaters this past March 25th. I feel sorry for that woman who's singing because she just lost her alien son who sacrificed his life defeating Doomsday
Jeahav Valentin I have no idea what you're talking about. I stopped paying attention to pop culture around the time _The Simpsons_ used a Ke$ha song instead of their usual theme song.
+ᒍᗩᗰᕮᔕ ᑭᗩᗯᔕOᑎ I'll explain to you what I'm caucasing about here, that actress who plays the singer in this movie is diane lane. She plays Supermans earth mother Martha Kent in Man Of Steel and Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice. If you've seen Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice that already hit theaters this past Friday March 25th on a good Friday Easter you'll know what I'm saying. In Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice her alien kryptonian son aka Superman sacrificed his life fighting and defeating Doomsday while simultaneously Doomsday stabbed Superman with a sharp kryptonian spear while thus far Superman killed Doomsday at the expense of saving humanity once again by being killed. So at the end temporarily Superman died at the end of Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice, so therefore she lost her alien kryptonian son
Jeahav Valentin Haha, ok-- thanks for explaining. I am pretty sure I am never going to see that movie. A Diane Lane movie I do like is _Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains._ Funny to see the arc her career took.
Music nowadays will never have this kind of effect on me. This song is soulful and uplifting. You have to look to the past for the magic. There is no magic today.
Around new year's eve 1984, one of the major tv networks played a show called, Playback '84. My family didn't have cable, so anything that showed music videos was an absolute treat! I recorded the whole tv show on my fisher-price tape recorder. They played this video, and became OBSESSED over this song. I was in 4th grade, but I would still call radio stations and ask them to play it, but I never knew the name of the band or artist. Pretty much everyone I ever spoke to about this song was clueless. Some time in the mid/late 90s, I was flipping through late night tv and saw this scene in the movie, and just about died from joy. However, before the age of the internet and lacking tv guides, I had no idea what movie it was. I am so thankful for youtube, because I can still obsess over this song...it will forever be one of my favorites! BTW, I still have that cassette tape, it is one of my most prized possessions!!
Heared this song a few times on Radio some years back but never new title or singer.By voice was always looking for Bonnie Tyler. Now listening did not pay much attention though it started to sound familiar. While reading your post similarities came up and here we go...got it.One of those many great songs you may have heared somtime somewhere and never had a chance to know. Also straight out of the 80's.Best time ever. Was a great experience,Glad to have been there.
That's a great story! I can totally understand loving this song. It's awesome! I saw the movie in the theater (yeah, I'm getting old) and I thought it was totally cool. This song blew my mind. I like how the movie is in a fictional world that has aspects from the forties to the eighties, and it all works. Streets of Fire wasn't profitable, and I suspect it's because there was too much really good competition. It also was difficult to market: was it a guy movie or a girl movie? I think it was both. It was also fun for the under-30 crowd (I was well under 30). This movie should have been a hit (IMHO).
All Jim Steinman songs have that "familiar" thing about them. Of course, you were thinking Bonnie Tyler, as Jim wrote some of her biggest hits like "Total Eclipse of the Heart" The progressions and structure of his music is so similar....I love his music, from Meatloaf to Celine Dion, you can always pick out a Jim Steinman song.
While I am still not that old, and was only a small child when this movie was released, this song still invokes feelings of loss over a misspent youth. I regret not what did, but what I did not do: Deeds never done, risks never taken, dreams never chased, women never loved. You only have one life to live, but the best time of your life is your youth - your teens and twenties - enjoy it while it lasts, because nothing you ever do or experience afterwards can compare to how it was when you were young.
Mr.Rumph I agree Steinman is a great writer just look at Meat Loaf for that little fact , however the production of this song is what in my opinion makes it. I believe Holly Sherwood(the actual voice in case some don't know) said they used something like 72 vocal tracks for this song to create a wall of sound. Absolutely brilliant in my humble opinion.
I remember being under the age of ten and watching this movie over and over....Just a few months ago I watched it with my soon to be 20 year old daughter and she loved it!!!! It never gets old!!!!
Is fair to say that the composer behind this magical song is Jim Steinman, one of the most important and sadly unkown figures of modern Rock. From his pen and imagination full genders of Rock developed after years to come, as Gothic, Symphonic Metal and has been inspiration of may bands that admire his genious!!! Hurray for Jim!!!!
I was 17 ... at the '84 hearing this song again and again, ... and again make our 'old cracked' memories hit hard our heart great memories of younger, simpler, and reckless thing happens in our lifes ... so much better time in '80 ... the GREAT AGES ... no shit like smarphones, pad, or pinterest, instagram ... yyeaaahhh ... no shit social media and computers, only good tv and best radio
This, Top Gun and Footloose. Greatest sound tracks of the 80s. And all 3 had story lines that were either confusing and needed rewrites, or were just lame.
Too bad she temporarily lost her alien kryptonian son when he sacrificed his life by defeating Doomsday while thus got killed by Doomsday simultaneously
Jim Steinman packs more lyrics in a short space, sung at an intensity matched by no other song writer. Pure magic. One of Meatloaf's interviews he was asked if he could keep up with the lyrics or told just keep going if he couldn't and pick up what he could. Meat had no problem, It takes a special singer to stand tall and not miss a word in a Steinman song, but when you get that match, you get an outstanding performance. Meatloaf and Holly Sherwood were born for Steinman's brand of music. Is Steinman's style recognizable? Yes. Is it all the same? Not in my mind, but I would be hard pressed to name a Jim Steinman song I don't like.
This was the GREATEST video MTV ever did - cycles, back up singers, a young Defoe, Steinman's crescendo after crescendo, and 18 year old Diane Lane in THE red dress. A must.
I was 14 when this movie came out. I had the biggest crush on Michael Kevin Pare. It's amazing how a song can take you back and make you remember so much!
+Maritzah Siarvanaux That woman who's singing on stage I feel very very bad for her because this past March 25th on a good Friday easter she just lost her kryptonian alien son who sacrificed his life defeating Doomsday just for humanity's sake
I've got a dream 'bout an angel on the beach And the perfect waves are starting to come His hair is flying out in ribbons of gold And his touch has got the power to stun I've got a dream 'bout an angel in the forest Enchanted by the edge of a lake His body's flowing in the jewels of light And the earth below him's starting to shake But I don't see any angels in the city I don't hear any holy choirs sing And if I can't get an angel I can still get a boy And a boy'd be the next best thing The next best thing to an angel A boy'd be the next best thing I've got a dream 'bout a boy in a castle And he's dancing like a cat on the stairs He's got the fire of a prince in his eyes And the thunder of a drum in his ears I've got a dream 'bout a boy on a star Looking down upon the realm of the world He's there all alone and dreaming of someone like me I'm not an angel but at least I'm a girl I've got a dream when the darkness is over We'll be lying in the rays of the sun But it's only a dream and tonight is for real You'll never know what it means But you'll know how it feels It's gonna be over (over) Before you know it's begun (Before you know it's begun) It's all we really got tonight Stop your crying hold on (tonight) Before you know it it's gone (tonight) Tonight is what it means to be young Tonight is what it means to be young Let the rebels begin Let the fire be started We're dancing for the restless and the broken-hearted Let the rebels begin Let the fire be started We're dancing for the desperate and the broken-hearted Let the rebels begin (Tonight is what it means to be young) Let the fire be started (Before you know it it's gone) We're dancing for the restless and the broken-hearted Let the rebels begin Let the fire be started We're dancing for the desperate and the broken-hearted Say a prayer in the darkness for the magic to come No matter what it seams Tonight is what it means to be young Before you know it it's gone Tonight is what it means to be young Before you know it it's gone I've got a dream when the darkness is over We'll be lying in the rays of the sun But it's only a dream and tonight is for real You'll never know what it means But you'll know how it feels It's gonna be over (over) Before you know it's begun It's all we really got tonight Stop your cryin' hold on (tonight) Before you know it it's gone (tonight) Tonight is what it means to be young Tonight is what it means to be young The things they say And then the things they do Nothin's gonna stop us if our dream is true
yes indeed, after >30yrs and many more coming with horrendus graphics effects..... and still nothing near or even beat this epic musical, entertaining Streets Of Fire! its an Epic..... the sets, costumes, and even dialogues were so 'into' the "streets" I always thought there could be a part 2 or even a remake..... its truly a memorable piece from Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young..............
I was an 80's kid, and I'm still so thankful to have been an early teen when THE best movies, music, and gadgets were introduced. I remember watching this on HBO back in the day when it first came out it seemed to remain a mainstay on that channel for a very long time, so therefore I would watch it over and again every few months and of course got burnt out, BUT...to this day I own it on DVD and will go back and watch it every couple of years and its always just as good, and the same goes with another HBO mainstay from the 80s..."King of the mountain" with Harry Hamlin and Dennis Hopper...BAD ASS movie!
crooked degenerate society like America was and is serve propaganda to eastern countries who was without any crimes in those time how Molotov cocktails , hammer in to head , knife in the stomach is the way to be young and free . lol that was 80s. in those times USA have and had something to rob and today there is no more countries to rob without stepping on " Russian foot " so they are so nostalgic about long lost times when they live good on misery of robbed nations . pathetic
Diane Lane was a stone-cold, drop-dead knock out ! and Holly Sherwood's voice was perfect. this film is a gem, way ahead of it's time. -------------Wolfsky9, 69 y/o
The evolution- the modern musical... back then. What it Meant to be Young- is what IT WILL BE to those for whom it will Always mean, no matter their age ... to be Young.
@Tiddybeth, I couldn't agree more about your statement regarding Jim Steinman. It took me years to learn that the lead singers to this song was Holly Sherwood (Wondergap) and Laurie Sargent (Face to Face). The credit on the soundtrack was listed as "Fire Inc." only. Really? I wanted to know who the singer(s) with the powerful voice(s) on this song was/were... well, I finally did and I wasn't disappointed. These ladies can SANG!
Is there a more unmistakable songwriter in the world than Jim Steinman? This song (while awesome) is a 99% rewrite of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding On For A Hero" and "Total Eclipse of the Heart," and about a half-dozen Meat Loaf songs. Want melodrama? Want to flick your Bic in the night? Get you some Jim Steinman. :)
When I first heard it, and Nowwhere Fast, I knew it was Jim's handiwork - unmistakable, as you said - I didn't even need to read the cover. I just knew it had to be Jim.
What a great movie this is. I can't believe it didn't do well at the theaters. Michael Pare deserves to be right up there with the Brad Pitts, Tom Cruise's and so forth.
I was just a kid when i saw this movie for the first time, but still today it's one of my top 10 movies ever...and the soundtrack is my no.1.... Great video
Call me creepy but I have been watching and listening to this video every night before I go to bed, it inspires me so much & it brings me so much memories, it makes me feel young! Btw there are no words to describe Diane Lane she's just awesome!!!
***** your not creepy i to long for the past best times of our lives, i have a habit of listening to the song alphaville_ forever young official video call me sentimental but we all have a missing of the past ,but your right makes us feel young again .
***** She was gorgeous and Michael Pare was the perfect hunk. I loved this movie in '84 after graduating college, and still watch it today. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's sweet and nostalgic.
This is an awesome video sound track. You have to see the movie. 1980's... Cocky, a blend of 80's and 50's that makes no sense.. Very violent, too violent for its time. But the music is great. As for me, the movie is great.
+Edwin Rivera One of those movies where you can't ask questions, just let yourself get into it and roll with it and be entertained. Not everyone can do that. My wife would hate it. LOL.
I loved it. I was 20 when I saw it in the movies. Like you say... No questions Just Enjoy it. If your wife hates it, you need another wife. Just kidding.
50's nostalgia was huge in the 80s.. nostalgia goes in 30 year waves. I wouldn't say it "made no sense".. it's what Walter Hill going for. 80's was basically the 50's on endless cocaine.
this movie and this song and other songs of this movie is my childhood...... great movie incredible soundtrack let me back 30 years ago to my child time.......
