I would never wish ill upon anyone, but after watching Tonikaku Kawaii (TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You), I made an exception.
Koi no Uta is a song by Yunomi with a blend of electronic music, Japanese style (wafuu) instruments and the pentatonic scale.
At first, I didn't think a piano arrangement would work for this song. There are only two melody phrases and the whole song uses only one chord progression. I was really thinking hard how to make it work, and as usual, I turn to classical music for inspiration.
In classicial music, there is a commonly used musical form called "Variations". Basically, the composer begins with a plain introduction of a musical theme, and then repeats the theme throughout the piece with variations. One example is the well-known "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star variations" by Mozart.
When arranging Koi no Uta, I used the idea of Variations and iterated through different transformations of the two melody phrases. I also introduced the "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" theme to add a bit of flourish and complexity. The second half of this arrangement is also inspired by Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, which fits quite well as Koi no Uta could be described as a rhapsody too.
