Have you heard of this type of oak tree? More than 95% of the natural population of this species is in San Diego. Although most of coastal California is made up of oak trees, Tony stands under one of the rarest. 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘪, known as the Engelmann oak, requires gardens like yours and ours to help it flourish!

I appreciated this clear description of the ways in which evolutionary history, ecology, and conservation opportunities come together in Engelmann oak. Thank you!

I've read that it used to be common all the way to San Fernando Valley, but that it was eradicated by farming/building. Is this correct?

Yes most of the Engelmann oak’s habitat has been destroyed
