Happy Valentine's Day all you Banksians out there!! In this video I snipped Tony and Mike's interview bits from the BBC documentary 'A Life Less Ordinary' about Phil's life. They of course discuss Phil's impact on Genesis and everything as well as Genesis itself. I've also included the bonus feature interview off of the DVD. Enjoy!!

Its really rare to find these guys side by side. Good job

I had the utter privilege to spend some brief time with these guys after several concerts, back in the '70s. They were all very friendly, Phil particularly so. On one occasion I got their autographs on my camera case (the only thing I had to hand) and Phil would only sign it if if I, in turn, signed the skin of his snare drum. Imagine how that made a teen fan feel. I still have that camera case with the autographs. On another occasion, we were allowed into their dressing room after a gig, and they (apart from Peter, who sat quietly in the corner) were all very friendly and chatty. Tony, in fact, wrote out some on-the-fly sheet music for the opening chords of "Watcher Of The Skies" for my mate. They are all terrific musicians, and really great guys.

Wow, you're lucky! I'd love to have that opportunity. It amazes me that Tony just quickly wrote out the sheet music like that! I've always felt that all of them were genuinely friendly people.

Banksian Central someone (probably bruford) was amazed by the fact they are like people that never had / enjoyed success. like average people, friendly, quiet and simple. he was friend with phil but he realized this during his tour in 1976.

I highly recommend Phil’s book ‘Not Dead Yet’. It features in-depth accounts of some of the things talked about here as well as many other aspects of Phil’s life both in Genesis and as a solo artist. It’s also littered with Phil’s trademark humour.

Classy guys all of them... Great musos too... Phil Collins's humour was just hilarious... Read somewhere a South African Business man returning from UK was astounded to see, as the plane came in to land at Cape Town airport that it was filled with crowds & he turned to the passenger next to him saying : "Wonder who the crowd are here to greet?" to which the passenger said blandly : "me"... Low &, behold it was Mike Rutherford (not sure where the "Mechanics" were)... "You!?" replied the Business man - "Who the hell are YOU???" 😄😄😄

These interviews make you realize they're human as well... I don't know why but I never thought of Phil being so nervous that his hand shaked when holding a paper. It's really cool that Mike mentions that he miss hanging out with the guys, I mean, after so many years they must have developed such a close relationship that it must be hard to be apart for so long. It happens to me with a couple of childhood friends (who happen to be bandmates of mine as well), I miss them when I don't see them for a month or so, we used to hang out a lot more before...

There’s an interview out there where he’s laughing his head off the whole time. It’s really cool. I think he’s just a serious person most of the time. Especially when talking about his life’s work. He’s also not afraid to tell it like it is, which I respect.

People ask him about the music, he’s honest about his thoughts on the music; people ask him about the people, he’s honest about his thoughts on the people. It’s clear he has affection for everyone he’s worked with and maintains a separation between criticism of music and criticism of character. Tbh I don’t understand where people get “aloof” from. Any interview I’ve seen he makes jokes every chance he gets and is just as quick to criticize himself as anyone else.
@StevoLloyds
@StevoLloyds Год назад
In one interview with all 3 of them present, Phil comments that maybe Tony and he are moving in opposite direction with age, regarding taking themselves too seriously and just joking around. Which is quite nice that Phil realises that he's become quite an uptight, self important person, but Tony has relaxed into knowing that he doesn't have to fight for recognition anymore. Phil of course had the post 80's backlash against him and his health problems, so it's forgivable. Tony was just young, ambitious and was very passionate about how he thought the music should be. Mike seems to have replaced Phil as the diplomat / glue that kept them together But generally three great guys I'd love to have a beer with.

The most underrated band of the 20th century. Every album with Pete is a masterpiece. By the 80's their skill allowed them to swop prog for pop and they made millions of dollars. Their old now and probably lack the energy but it would be something to hear them put together some prog songs like Selling England's. Modern technology would allow them to just send bits to each other to build on. The lineup - Mike,Phill,Steve,Pete,Tony and Ant. Whole generations have no idea of their amazing skills

On the subject of Phil's voice when touring - I would have thought that the Genesis tours would have been easier than his solo tours because of some of the expanded instrumental passages in the Genesis repertoire as opposed to the succession of 4-minute songs on his solo tours. Obviously, those (short Genesis songs) lessened as the material became more 'concise' (read 'poppy'), but there was still 'Domino' and a few others. With the earlier repertoire, he was probably only singing about 50% of the night....

I think thats Phils working class roots that had him reading reviews. At public school I would think that part of the education is that elitist notion that what the plebians say about you doesn't matter that much. Obviously not completely but its odd that Phil takes such criticism so seriously. As he's said, its hardly his fault his music got played unendingly and that he was such a phenomenal musician that he could churn out hits. The one reason at one time I looked down on him a bit was that early genesis was certainly in large part known for their lyrics, which were just out and out almost as crazy as jon andersons. But then later Phil kind of dismisses not only the idea of lyrics in general, but their earlier lyrics in particular. So in a sense he was kind of insulting all the people who really enjoyed the music in part for that reason. I think writing a song to bring out the 'myth of salamacis' is as worthwhile as one to discuss a womans 'invisible touch'. They have two very different motivations behind them, but certainly one is more 'original' than the other. But I still dont' really get why guys who claim to get on fine can't sit down together and play together. Hell, have Phil sing "I know what I like" and have Pete play the drums, they aren't that tough on that one. Even doing it as a covid thing from different places would be cool, because it just seems odd that they always claim they get along, but can't do ONE thing together.

I do have a spot of trouble understanding what these two in particular are saying sometimes, perhaps a result of their being upper-crusty enough to tend toward de-emphasizing their words as they approach the end of a sentence, like denizens of an English country estate in an episode of Jeeves & Wooster. It comes across as an inherent modesty almost; that's my guess, anyway. In any case, it's totally adorable, and as an American with an unfamiliar ear, 100% my issue, rather than theirs. 🇬🇧
