The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Duke and Tony. Two of the best at what they did or do. What a composer/songwriter/pianist Duke was.

What elegance class style and sound. American Classical Music at its best. This is what it was like every Sunday night growing up in the 60’s into the 70’s. Jazz Pop Motown Broadway Rock Classical all represented by the best of each genre. Now there are the kardashians how far we have fallen.

This is a classic LIVE performance of two jazz legends. As far as I know they NEVER released an album together. CBS really "screwed up" by NOT recording many of these Sullivan performances on 4 (or 8) ch studio recording equipment. Everyone was so focused on TV and video that they lost sight of the audio quality. Exactly the opposite of what the Grateful Dead did.

And what about that praise from Duke at the end?! I'm sure it meant so much to Tony.

I don't know if it was planned that way or if it was just a coincidence. Duke's jacket and Tony's shirt are the same color as the blue used on the stripes on the set. Thank you for sharing! 💖

You sure that's Sonny Payne? Actually looks like Rufus 'Speedy' Jones. Without a doubt, its one of two, as they were both with Duke and Basie around this time. The drummer here looks more like Jones to me, however.

@@waldolydecker8118 It's Sonny... Rufus was a much more Burly looking man and he wore glasses which this drummer has on. I thought the same but getting a closer look at the video it looks like Sonny. Plus rufus played double bass drums

@@henridelagardere264 I tell you, friend, over the past 10 years, there's been very few things that lift my mood. The music of Mr. Bennett, Mr. Ellington, Mr. Sinatra, Mr. Basie, Mr. Cole, and their contemporaries are such reasons. Your eloquent, humorous, and thoughtful comments are another. It's obvious you're a highly-intelligent, dignified, and kind person with an appreciation of exceptional music and cinema. If you ever need your cable fixed, I am always at your service.

Thanks for Tony and Duke! However, I also must say, and I apologize for kvetching again, but I'm really disappointed by the lack of uploads lately. Two uploads a day isn't very much, and as a result, we aren't getting a variety of rare music performances to pick from like we were before. I hope things will get back on track, as there are hundreds of musical performances left I really want to see, which I have never seen before. I'm glad you are still posting though and I hope you never stop until we see all the music (even though I know not everything will be posted).

Tom, I'm so sorry to bother you, but we need you. We are all confused on todays post of Anna Maria Alberghetti. Ed Sullivan Show posted a title of the song, but a subscriber says, it's a different title. We are lost without you. I hope you can get to listen to it and maybe you could clear up this mystery. Thank you so much. 💖

@@that70sgirl90 It's no bother at all! I like to help out! Feel free to ask me anything at anytime. Yes, the person is right, they used the wrong song title for the video. "O mio babbino caro" is a much different song.

@that70sgirl90 2 года назад
@@TomElvisSmith Thank you so much. Not that I didn't trust him, but someone posted they thought babbino meant baby. That's why we were all confused. Although the song she was singing was bright and cheerful. When I looked up the title it said, it was about a family fued over her wanting to marry a man , they didn't want her to marry. Sounded almost like "West Side Story"... only in an Italian setting. I knew the one person I could go to was you! Thanks again!! 💖
