Words and music by Lionel Bart. Arranged by Robert Farnon, sung by Tony Bennett, from their 1968 album, "Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album." I must've listened to this damn thing upwards of 200 times while I worked on this intermittently over the past year, and it still gets to me every time.

This is such a powerful song. It has strong emotion in the dramatic build up to the climactic ending. A great performance by Tony Bennett and a great arrangement by Robert Farnon. A masterpiece.

No argument from me; fortuitous collision of great song, greater singer, and - arguably - even greater arranger. BTW, 4 yet another towering rendition of this song (by yet another of the 20th century's greatest arrangers), I recommend Clare Fischer, circa 1977; 1/2 solo piano intro, 1/2 vibes-led bolero, it's a master class in re-harmonization & voice-leading, not 2 mention the art of accompaniment: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_FxGfMJi-dY.html
