Tony Christie was one of those early 70's type singers who could actually sing. Listen to his control right throughout his vocal range. Bloody superb. And this song is an absolute pearl.
I used to sing this song with my mum, playing on an 8-track stereo, in a Ford Mustang convertibele, in the early 70's. - I wish I had a time-machine to travel back to these days! By far the happiest days of my life... (Lots of Tom Jones, too...)
I am Spanish and it is the first time i listen that song and it is absolutely lovely! Great voice.. But i think it is gonna be stocked in my head for a long time.
Reminds me of being a kid - mum had this record and we played it and played it! Never realised that Tony Christie has such a cheeky smilethough! - every time I watch this I can't help but grin when he smiles at the camera! Fantastic voice and great song : )
Tony Christie was awarded the freedom of the city of Amarillo, Texas for helping it's tourism industry. Although at the time he had never visited the city.

Takes me back to the dreamy days of the '70's. This tune was played ad nauseam on Radio Uganda in the seventies when i was still a small boy. Wonderful song....!!!

Tony Christie is God... 16 April 1972 ... I'm eight years old and returning to Waterford on a coach from Cork after Waterford had nicked three goals in the last twelve minutes to beat Cork Hibs 3-2 and thereby snatch the League of Ireland title from the Corkmen in front of 26,000 people. My uncle Fran brought me with him on the day. I don't know how many times the lads on the coach sang Amarillo on the way back. Tony Christie is God.
It's me again, Mary, and yes I just have to have my "fix" of Tony Christie. It's going to be a long and busy weekend with the kids, shuttling them around and cleaning the house.
