People see a guitar solo on YT and expect something flashy instead they see/hear subtly, modal complexity and dynamics and it all goes straight over their heads cuz they were expecting him to do some Van Halen stuff. Jazz and Prog Rock requires maturity to be appreciated. I love Planet X - Clonus.

@ChrysostomosDear friend, that of the trained ear is sad because to be an exquisite sound it must be enjoyable by all kinds of ears, for its part, the sound of Tony if he is mired in the dependence on the style of music he professes cannot be exquisite then. my account I try to explain what being a keyboard player myself and making samples sounds on the keyboard I still keep saying and thinking that its distorted sound will be due to the pickup that it uses in lower mode or it could be the effect of the pedal itself but comparing it with the sound that I like and describe as exquisite What is Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe or Marco Sfogli & RIck Graham, which I repeat could be the brand of the guitar or something uncontemplated but I cannot give an excellent reference to Tony's distortion and I feel sorry for that.greetings friends

Guy always play his stuff well. Very finished . In my mind he is one of the founding fathers of modern day shred. That initial group is just crazy Yngwie, . Gilbert, Moore, Friedman , Howe, Becker, Kotzen, and McAlpinre. . If you ever try to play their stuff, they are all have very different systems of playing . The last great pre- internet generation where they had to make up what they didn’t understand. These days? All the styles have converged because they can watch each other on RU-vid

I haven't heard MacAlpine since he did that record insert with Guitar Player Magazine, but immediately recognized him and his tone when the started the staccato arpeggios. Super clean playing, but I never could get into his songwriting style. Not many have the level of dexterity, but I don't see other guitar players citing him as an inspiration or influence. At the least, he was one of the first bona fide shredders out there. He's up there somewhere. Also I recall he is exactly as fluent and speedy on keys. EDIT: and that was one sweet key and soundscape change at 3:40, woot!

Give Tony credit for being the only modern black guitarist who understands/gets rock music. Certainly better than Hendrix ever was. Educated & trained in classical music. He’s jammed with various other great guitarists. He mentored Nili Brosh for a few years in his band. He has good taste for composition & structure, & is melodic, even if some of it may not be memorable. Going from 6 strings, to 7 & 8, he keeps looking to push the boundaries of modern rock, with Prog sensibilities. He manages to hold his own even among better players; Vai, Gilbert, Loomis, Timmons, etc. But no one will play guitar better than Shawn Lane, R.I.P.
@paulgtarist

Amazing that his guitar is so plain. The instrument is just there as a tool for producing sound and doesn't have any flowers on the fretboard, a contoured body or any other visual distractions. It evokes almost a Japanese minimalism. I wonder if that is his signature model.

Take many jazz guitarists with amazing skills, but not known because you don't listen to jazz. Tony is also a jazz guitarist, classic pianist,....well..U name it what he doesn't play.
