Tony Rayns discusses Hou Hsiao-Hsien's A Time to Live, A Time to Die in a pre-recorded introduction as part of our New Taiwanese Cinema season.
Inspired by filmmaker Hsiao-hsien Hou's own childhood, this drama centers on Ah-Ha-Gu (You Anshun), a boy who comes of age during a tumultuous time in his family's history. When the Gu family made the move from China's mainland to Taiwan, the elder family members struggled to adapt in their new environment while the adolescent Ah-Ha thrived. Indeed, as Ah-Ha grows to maturity, the generation gap grows fearsomely wide, threatening to alienate the young man from his family and their traditions.

This is a difficult one to take. Not that Hou has anything left to prove, but no one deserves such an illness. He’s one of the best ever.

It's heartbreaking to hear that Hou Hsiao-hsien is now retired from filmmaking due to battle with Dementia as he's supposed to work on Shulan River. I, however, want nothing but to see him healthy. Live long, master 3H! 🙏🏼

So sad to hear about Hou's illness. I just read about the news before stumbling upon this video. A Time to Live, A Time to Die is my favourite film of Hou's even though I haven't watched all of his films. I remember how touched I was by the film when seeing it in the cinema.

It's my favorite by this director as well, though I too haven't seen all of his work.

This is one of the great films of the Eighties, and a personal favorite of mine. Hou Hsiao-hsien remains one of the greatest living filmmakers.

💔 Sad news but no one better to deliver it than Mr. Rayns along with this thoughtful introduction to this film.

The characters running vertically down the door at the house at the opening of the film [高雄縣政府宿舍], say Kaohsiung County Government Dormitory.
