Tony Rice is an American guitarist and bluegrass musician. He is perhaps the most influential living acoustic guitar player in bluegrass, progressive bluegrass, newgrass and flattop acoustic jazz. He was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of fame in 2013.
Todd Higgins:
I was 14 years old when this was recorded. I had yet to see Tony in person and would have crawled across a combination of broken glass and hot coals to have been able to.

Yeah I just discovered him about a week ago. I watched Randy's channel called "the house that never sleeps "and he had play a playlist of songs and techniques and he always was talking about Tony Rice all the time Tony Rice and I never heard of him.. but man once I looked them up man that guy can really play and pick what a flat picker, and more importantly what a songwriter and just the whole thing man I mean he musta influenced more people than I could imagine.. I am hooked

In 1975, a good friend Gary Mehalick convinced me to go to a BG festival in New Hampshire. We arrived in time to walk up to 10' from center stage and out comes JD Crowe & the New South, my first time seeing a live BG band. With Tony on Guitar, I was hooked on a lifetime journey of Bluegrass festivals and many thousands of hours playing music. Some years down the road we swapped our Herringbones with each other & played a few tunes together, a thrill of a lifetime. Truly one of my two favorite musical heroes of all time, with Doc being the other. Thank you Tony for the years of amazement at your creativity and joy in hearing your choice of notes. Rest in Peace, good man.

I was at this Festival that my dad put on.It was in Epsom N.H. It was also the last U.S. performance before Skaggs,Rice, and Douglas went their own ways.I had supper with all of them and had a verbal invite by Tony to go to Woodstock Vt. and play with him.I never followed up on the invite.Been kicking myself since. The whole festival was recorded on reel to reel.I ended up with a 30 min. segment of them playing.Best bluegrass ive ever heard. Will miss you Mr. Rice. You are the Supreme Bluegrass Guitar God.R.I.P.

@@BrucePom54 Bruce, that was indeed the festival, I have some photos of them on the stage. What a band. As a side note to the festival, if you remember Bobby Tidwell, he was looking for a guitar & he & Gary liked each other's sound & Still River was started. Rod Roach on Banjo, I can't recall the bass player's name. I think this was Bobby's last band before passing.

This is Tony in his absolute prime, both in voice and playing. A gem of a recording, including some of his best songs. His singing is sometimes overlooked because of his enormous guitar playing. But he had a beautiful, understated sing style. Not note-bending flashy like his guitar work, but very effective, great tone, and interesting interpretations of Lightfoot and others. Thanks for posting. This is about as good a recording of Rice as I've seen on RU-vid.

I had the honor of playing music for a short time with this iconic talent "way back" in the late 1970's. Mr. Rice is a remarkable musician and truly one of a kind. Like Earl Scruggs, the banjo player who many people try to copy, no one on this planet can play like Tony Rice although multitudes have tried. This video recording of their performance exhibits his talents at the pinnacle of his abilities and is a stunning example of flatpicking guitar taken to a level that was unheard of a few years earlier. I've listened to many recordings of Mr. Rice's and in this one he and his group are really on fire.

I was working for Guitar Player Magazine in the late 70s and one of the editors was always able to get us backstage at the Great American Music Hall in SF. Had to honor of meeting Stephane Grappelli when he played with David Grisman with Tony of course. I once asked about the chord changes to "Swing 51" and he actually sat down and wrote out the chart for me. I still have that somewhere,

I grew up in Crystal River Fl back in the 70's with Tony's little brother Wyatt (on Tony's left). We had an awful lot of fun when Tony came home for a visit!!! That whole family was extremely talented and when they got together to play music it was like heaven on earth!!! Saw Wyatt and Larry in Hickory NC around 1991 what a great family... Sorry we've lost a great picker!!! Always knew when Tony was in town cause you'd see him with a cigarette in his mouth and a fishing pole in his hand... Enjoy heaven Mr Rice, catch a big one for me ;-)

I've been part of and seen so many gold rush's...usually people get excited and make noise....the true testament to Tony, and his playing is that everyone shut up when it kicked off...I love that. They have heard it so many times, but they all wanted to know what he had to say this night.

I was lucky enough to grow up with a best friend who's older brother is now a famous banjo player in his own right but when I was in high school in the late 80's ... I got to tag along to see The Tony Rice Unit and Tony play with several other bands. Without a doubt my favorite musician of ALL TIME!!!

The greatest guitar player ever has just passed away. Tony Rice guitar playing was truly a one of kind that could not be replicated. He had a sound you could just hear a few notes and know it was him for how clean he sounded. I have seen him a few times and will always remember the State Bridge show with Peter Rowen. The train was going by and they broke into some kind of railroad blues where you could of sworn they had rehearsed it for even the low squeal of the train seem to be in key with the music. . If you have never heard the Pizza Tapes with Garcia, Grisman and Rice I would highly recommend it. Rest in Peace Tony

I can't believe the youtube algo just brought this up now ! A gem of all time, many, many thanks for posting this !! All the very best to Mrs T. Rice and the family from Canada, cannot imagine life without him and his music. He meant so much to me over most of my life. Can't pick up my old D-18 without thinking about him and playing so many wonderful lines he brought us. The fretboard was never the same after his genius and inventive mind, not to mention the vast group of fabulous musicians be introduced to the world. Thank you Tony Rice for setting the bar so high.

I also saw Tony at the 1st Strawberry Bluegrass Festival at Leland Meadows in Strawberry. His workshop there was the most important lesson on Tuning and Tempo that I've ever received and energized me to restart my performing career. Tony Rice Presente! Thank you.

Tony Rice changed my life. I never could sing the high lonesome sound like the Osborne brothers or Bill Monroe but I could get close to Tony's singing and from then on I was wide open Bluegrass. He is and was the best and will never be replaced. This video gets me emotional for the 80's.

This might have been the first time I saw TR. I feel so fortunate to have been at Camp Mather for this festival. Now, in our collective sadness, we are fortunate that you have shared this show with us. Thank you so much for this. Thank you.

Tony's hands are super hot in this show. On his worst night he's still gonna be Tony Rice and you'd never know he's off because he'd choose safer licks, but he's landing everything here and he really reaches for some fuckin crazy shit. We all have those night when you land stuff you would only try when noodling around at home, but when Tony has one of those nights OMFG. Forget flatpicking, this is a time-capsule guitar performance for the ages. You see him giggle a few times when he lands his nastiest stuff and I almost cry every time. What an American treasure he was and always will be.

I've commented on this before I'm sure, but I love the way tony appreciates all the musicians. Especially Wyatt. This was the best I've ever heard him. Saw him in person several times. Jimmy Goudreau blended so good on this set.
