A customized SS (Telharmonic, QPAS, LxD, STO, 2 X Morphagene, Mimeophon, Tempi, Wogglebug, Rene, PP, Maths) was my first serious foray into modular. Got it in March 2020 and it made lockdown tolerable (very enjoyable even). I've got way more modules today, but I still keep that SS together as it feels like a complete instrument to me in a way that my big collection of modules does not...even though my larger modular covers more functionality. Maybe the SS was a product of its time, but so was every instrument of note ever built. It was, and is, a great system.
Wow ! That is an incredible generosity to share this rich perspective in terms creativity and modernity. Everything has to be more than incredible these days, I agree. Specially if its a commercial product. I also relate to that in terms of music creation, where your ideas have to bring something that has not been done, at least some sort of new perspective and that is a lot of pressure. Thank you for this interview, im sure Shared system will stay a modern classic !
Great talk by Tony. Although I wished you wouldn't have bleeped out the vactrol prices now and then. Maybe you could've at least put a relative price difference in there. Like "It's now five times as much", or something to that degree. Not THAT important, but an interesting tidbit nonetheless. Well, you have to think beyond vactrols anyway, as they're no longer allowed in the EU, which should be quite a considerable market to you guys. Am I wrong? I'd love to hear more talk by you guys about that subject.
My Make Noise and after journey: Besides a quick jaunt with the 0-Coast. The Shared System I had was right before the Rene 2 version was released. That was my first go at modular. I had to sell it during Lockdown due to not getting unemployment payments till Summertime. Now I have a small (hopefully more someday) selection of Rossum, and had a nearly complete R*S Serge eurorack system. Speaking of vactrols… My modular focus is my now full 10-space 200e system, which will be growing slowly towards the 24-space cabinet. My love and now more or less modular dedication (timewise and financially speaking) to Buchla 200e would not have been made possible without the Make Noise Shared System. I would love to put together a case of MN again , as I had always wanted to add and subtract from the SS to make something more specific to me, though I tend to like the aesthetic and UI design focus of singular makers; its just how my brain is.Again, MN’s approach to that led me to 200e and Serge, and Rossum. Let me stop here.
Love my Make Noise Shared System and other Make Noise modules so fun and great experimental sound tools. The quirky approach to synthesis is a nice change from basic subtractive synths and freedom from presets on traditional fixed hardware synths.

No “shared system 2” you say. That’s fine. Will there be any kind of “system” going into the new 4 bus case? Also, how many WBs did you guys end up making after all these years?

I wanted to create something that was dynamic and had emotional phrase arcs. I also avoided using traditional generative method of sample and hold for pitch information. Instead I used the X&Y channels of Rene for the main melodic material, being stepped at different rates, then summed together. One sequence is a simple rising scale, while the other rises in intervals of a third. The lengths of the two sequences are prime numbers and the direction of them will change based on some other unrelated cycle within the patch. This all results in a completely determinative, yet near infinitely changing melody that retains a mostly stepwise motion, characteristic of vocal melodies. All the other elements of the patch serve to create counterpoint and texture to enhance the line.
Just some feedback : I think the 0 format was a step in the right direction, keeping the good aspects of eurorack and discarding some formalities of modular. I would like to see more designs that resemble stand alone instruments such as Strega. I’m a bit selfish but I don’t think I’m alone in saying that eurorack often feels cramped , maybe larger controls would be nice , if all of your hardware grew by 30% it would be nice.

@@simoantere7283 Optomix is Direct Coupled so you can use it to modulate the modulation. Patch an LFO or Random voltage to the Signal In and patch the Out to modulation destinations and then Strike it!
