Dr Kureha is really a great character. While being harsh and pretty brutal she also has a good heart. What's even better is that it's one of the few female voices that her voice actor has done, because she is voiced by the same woman that voices Goku from Dragonball. Even better, Chopper is voiced by the woman who plays Pikachu.

In this arc you see two very important things: 1. Just how far Luffy will go for his friends. 2. That Tony Tony Chopper is a precious cinnamon roll that must be protected at all costs. Also it should be noted, One Piece isn't like some other Shonen shows. If a character is wounded badly enough, they *will* have a permanent scar from that wound that forever becomes part of their design. Zoro's scar from Mihawk is the first of these.

Fun fact: a joke character Oda created to explain a manga error back in the Shanks flashback (the bandit leader kicked the door off its hinges and then leaves and the door is back on) is a carpenter that shows up in Loguetown, watching Sanji's cooking contest, in the dragon filler arc and then again in this arc, fixing the door of the restaurant Kureha's now 49% owner of. He's one of three recurring joke characters, the other ones being a drunk from Nami's village that wanders the grandline and the legendary Pandaman himself. This carpenter is from the same family as another carpenter with the same name that looks exactly like him but has an actual tiny role much later on in the story. edit: you can see him at 7:43 behind Usopp and then again at 7:55.

Something not directly addressed in the show, Oda had a friend who died of old age that he based a later big character on. Because of this, he made the average lifespan of humans in One Piece around 140-150 years so that wise old people can live essentially another whole life’s time.

The scars thst dknt heal in onepiece tend to be of importance and reflect some unresolved aspect for that character. It's a real fun story tool once you notice it and start asking questions like "who/what gave them that scar?" Since Mihawk gave Zorro that scar, it will probably be there until he becomes the greatest swordsman.
