I have played a banjo for many years, it has helped me see parts of the world I would never have seen unless I played music with it. Thank you Mr Tony T you are my favourite player of the banjo.
I so heartily agree with Tony, I started playing 5 years ago age 75 when I got myself mahogany Deering Sierra banjo here in the UK. The only downside living here in my part of the UK there are very few if any banjo players around my area However, just as Tony says the time flies by when practising or learning stuff. At my age it may take a little longer to learn and I'm sorry I never started years earlier, but its all therapeutic and you can immerse yourself so much so you do actually forget everything else, and its all so pleasurable and rewarding. Should you be thinking of beginning banjo I would like to pass on this. I found everything you try learning and found unbelievably difficult, you can suddenly find you can do, you feel your struggling then like magic you can suddenly do that lick or get that roll right, it really is amazing. Its a highly recommended hobby and if you like the sound of the banjo, go for it.
Sean. Thanks for your comment here and I'm really interested as I've just started learning myself at age 60. Many say because of coming into music so late I'll never be any good. How have you progressed in the 5 years. I'd be happy to play just a few songs "well". Here in Australia there are apparently lots of folk clubs but spread across the country so a bit difficult to get to for jamming etc.
More Americnas should play the banjos instead of the guitars. Maybe, they are more closely connected to their ancestors. Guitars are more like the instruments made up in Europe.
