In this conversation John plainly answers those who may regard his approach as 'too Christian'. How does the meditator who has no Christian background discover the peace that passes all understanding? Some say he is not Christian enough. Hear his response to both.

How simple John makes things as he speaks only from his own experiences from life. He seems so respectful of all religions and peoples. It just happens that some of his experiences are from a Christian perspective based on circumstances of birth and education. I also hear a lot of universal truths. I just try to listen with an open mind and experience his respect for nature. So little “bell ringing” required, what a great man.

I really want to thank you for this. In some ways, John addresses the whole subject of non-duality, perfectly. The more words that we use, the more concepts we get tangled up in. Could it be that there is only stillness and that it is all we need? I would love to sit on the church steps with John and share a cup of tea from a thermos flask. We could share the deep peace that comes from stillness. It matters not how many concepts you believe in. They all fade and die eventually leaving only stillness and truth. In some ways John reminds me of Paul Heddeman the American non-duality teacher, who tried every spiritual practice known to mankind, only to realise that pure joy can be found in a good latte coffee.
@lukeneely389
@lukeneely389 3 года назад
But while you can certainly overcomplicate this Truth, a life lived without any thought towards seeking it will push it to the background. A latte is an earthly pleasure, and to limit ourselves to the enjoyment merely of things like that, we leave the space open for the false gods of materialism and such to come in. That is why the West, in its quest to shirk its religious past, is in such a poor state.

@LouigiVerona
@LouigiVerona 6 лет назад
I completely understand your perspective. But I want to know how the world really works, not live in illusions and gardened within what I want to believe. I also think it is actually not that scary. Nothingness cannot be felt. You were basically "dead" before you were born for several billion years. How did that feel? It did not, right. All our projects are generally short-term value anyway. Even if what we do benefits people across generations, in general our lives are part of a narrative that is satisfying enough even without the infinite gains. So, I understand, I really do, how you feel, and I think I feel the same way in that it is sad that we have evolved to be that reflective and that smart to understand the whole depth of what we are leaving behind, forever. But I would prefer to know that and die, rather than lie to myself all my life.

One cannot be “too Christian” or “not Christian enough.” A person is either Christian or not, it isn’t a scale. Sure, a person’s ideas and actions can reflect the teachings of Jesus more than others, but this does not make them “more Christian.”
@saysHotdogs
@saysHotdogs 6 лет назад
bigfootNPC you’re dangerously wrong about that. Extremists exist. Jihadists exist. These people that hurt others and justify it with outdated religious text that are so poorly understood that they are interpreted a million different ways are too much of a thing.
@bigfootNPC
@bigfootNPC 6 лет назад
Mande Peer I am referring to Christianity, not Islam. To be a Christian means to believe in and accept Jesus and his teachings. That’s it, you’re either Christian or you’re not. Islam could be completely different, but I don’t know much about it. In most cases, however, extremists are simply wrong about their religious teachings. This doesn’t make them “too Muslim” or “too Jewish” or “too Christian.” However, I cant say that for sure, only for Christianity. “Extremist” Christians such as the Westborough Baptist Church are simply wrong, and don’t follow Jesus’s teachings. This doesn’t make them more or less Christian. Again, this could be different for different religions.
@jupiterinaries6150
@jupiterinaries6150 6 лет назад
bigfootNPC who are you to say what a Christian is? You don't represent Jesus.
@bigfootNPC
@bigfootNPC 6 лет назад
za zen You’re right, I don’t represent Jesus. I won’t be afraid to admit that I don’t know everything about the Bible and Christianity, but having studied the gospels, I have learned that there is nothing we can do to earn God’s love. We can become Christian not by our actions, because our actions are never enough. We are Christian if we accept that Jesus Christ died for our imperfections. This means that even the most pious priest cannot be any more deserving of God’s grace than you or me, and should therefore not be considered “more Christian”. Of course, I am in no position to judge whether or not somebody is a Christian or not, because I’m not Jesus. My only point here is to share the idea that we are in no way capable of “earning” the title of “Christian.” We are Christians through faith alone by the grace of God alone. I hope this clarifies a little bit.
@jupiterinaries6150
@jupiterinaries6150 6 лет назад
bigfootNPC I've never come across a formula for being Christian. Faith alone, grace along seem too formulaic. Praying from the heart opens up God to us, opens up Christ...that's how one can come to God, via the heart.

Like Rev. Thomas Treherne Mr Butler has maybe worked out that contemplation is the better part of life. People tend to couch this experience and all the richness that flows from it in whatever language they are most familiar with. I would say that there definitely is such a thing as a Christian meditator (with the essential caveat that meditators go beyond words and concepts). I wonder, would anyone say that Ramana was "too Hindu"? Or Rumi "too Islamic" the insight is what matters.

17:45 - Forgot to ring the bell! Thank you so much for bringing my question to John. I have dreamt about sitting down with him at that beautiful church and having a conversation, and this is as close as I'll ever get. I laughed out loud when you revealed the bell. I still wonder though - I can't help but wonder... If we found God's body at the bottom of the pacific ocean, and towed it to shore; if we learned that there was a God, but God was now dead, perhaps for thousands of years, would it break John? It's an absurd thought experiment, but it would mean there was, but no longer is, everlasting life. No longer anything beyond this existence. "God wrote two books, one is the bible, the other is nature." John is still invoking God. From my perspective, this a cosmic accident. John is holding his ground, and it's still holy ground. The Christian God, or any other God, is still a belief in a higher power, a higher purpose, a belief that there is life beyond life. These are things that I cannot believe in. I was raised baptist, so I received the same lessons, but it just doesn't add up anymore, and it hasn't for a long time. I am, unfortunately, trapped in the city. There is no quiet, there is no escaping man's machinations. I can't get out, it's just not financially feasible (nor is owning a car, so I can't even drive to open spaces). I have always believed that language is the most destructive of man's inventions. We can split he atom, but nothing can come close to the damage language has done. We can no longer interface with nature, or each other, directly as creatures. We must depend on the middle-man of language, and the never ending struggle with our internal monologues that won't shut up. I suppose shutting that voice down is what brings peace and stillness... It's ironic that the only way for John to communicate his message is through language, not only in these videos, but him being an author himself! We can't escape it! You are both so gentle and calm. I hope you continue recording these interviews. Even if I can never grasp peace for myself, at least I can sample a little bit of it from these videos. Thank you.

This point of view almost hurts John. We may find ourselves apologizing for our faith frequently, and questioning our role with God - even our ability to name His creations. I've struggled with the problem and worked on it for years trying to build something that will support creation in a lasting way. Wrong use of names and labels have cost us so much!

The words "aqua," "l'eau," "H2O," and "water" are very different, but they all refer to the same thing. How ignorant to suppose they all refer to different realities. No mystic should be criticized for speaking in the vocabulary of his or her own culture. We don't criticize Rumi and Hafez for speaking in Koranic terms, they were devout Muslims. We don't criticize the Yogis and Vedantists for speaking in terms of their Vedic heritage. We didn't criticize Thich Nath Hanh for speaking in Buddhist terms. How childish to ring a bell of judgment whenever a Christian mystic speaks in Christian symbols.

I love listening to John. That will not stop but Jesus isn’t a label of men . He was a real. History tells us so. Jesus was either God in tbe form of a man or a Liar. I placed my faith in him as a child and in my teen years I strayed away but never doubted in him. He revealed himself to me through a series of miracles that can’t and will never be able to be discredited. Jesus said I am the Way , the Truth and the Life. No man comes to the Father accept by me. Now that is not religion that is either a fact or a Lie. I myself believe in my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus in the true Son of God and that he didn’t mention any other possible way to enter Heaven. Not by your religion or your inner self awareness but by a decision we all have to make.

Can one argue that passing (such as passing of time), as in contrast to stillness, is more natural? Does stillness refer to the moment? As in the moment of time which is formless and changeless.

Buddha same story: a prince, son of the king, enjoying living with his father in a royal palace and paradise garden, decides to leave it behind to go suffer with the humans to free them from suffering the nightmare illusion of being but a human. Sitting with his back stuck towards the trunk of a tree as if it were a cross giving him poisonous fruits only, a tree of judgement in duality, before turning it into a tree of life, thus coming to himself as the enlightened one, to help others come to the same he enjoys, entirely to their benefit.

By taking on the human experience, in a way we have all given our Life for the souls. As God is our true Being, a Being which is and has infinitely great Love and Happiness, as Such we lovingly willed there would be others who could also enjoy what we in and as God enjoyed. So we imagined being those others, in this case humans. We knew beforehand (to speak in time) that experiencing being others, who, to be new creations that did not exist yet, had to be different from the status quo, would at first be like suffering a terrifying nightmare to Who we really are. Experiencing being but human was (compared to experiencing Who and How we are in truth as infinitely great Love and Happiness) like letting Oneself be spiritually tortured to death by the very beings we were giving our Life for and to. We would subconsciously and often consciously accuse ourselves and be accused by others as humans for all the human imperfections we would experience having. It was going to be a crucifixion. Yet we came anyway, so also the thus created new souls would eventually know and enjoy that Who they really are is infinitely great, courageous, intelligent, wise, creative, immortal, all powerful, pure altruistic Charity. And that it is the One Who gave His Life for our souls Who is reading and thus remembering this now in human appearance, which might seem to be but our human appearance, but which is really God's, in order to share Himself and His Life with the souls as a living eternal divine inheritance. As God we were to gain nothing from it, only to recuperate what we had given up, to have it again but when also the souls would have it. Then we were to come to our Self, our Life, and our Joy again, but now also as the souls, entirely to their eternal benefit. Much divine love indeed.

Meditation is not necessarily separate from Christianity, in my opinion. The early Christians had a Gnostic tradition which has still influenced the churches to this day. These people believed in finding the spiritual Christ, who was a messenger of knowledge that freed the trapped soul from the prison of matter. Christianity has certainly evolved to understand itself in many other ways, such as for example through finding meaning through christian suffering, but my point is that the notion of 'peace' is not devoid from Christianity.

Excellent comment! I have been very interested in the early Christians, especially in the Gnostic tradition, and their focus on finding the inner spiritual Christ in my eyes is exactly what John is preaching - just put in other words. The eastern Church still has got much more of the old mystic approach. It is really sad that modern western Christianity seems to have lost every mystic approach to God and every strive for enlightenment.

I be too felt rejected by the church and tried an outreach but told I was not what they wanted in their church because the way I dress. Since then I have realized I need to seek god..seek goodness and be still in awareness of the blessings and messages of the spirit. I could not find an email address for you so may I raise a thought? Many of us never had the "Scripture Lessons" you mention, especially 10 years of them. The main reason I wanted to contact you (forgive the comment below) was to ask 'do you remember what pattern these lessons followed ? Do you see a need for them today and if so how could the youth of the nation be reintroduced to them ?

Now surly we must ask, was Jesus a practitioner of meditation? If the answer is 'YES' why to dose the church not promote it? If John was publicly talking 2000 years ago what would be written of him? No need of any belief when experience is present. It reminds me of the phrase, 'be careful what you wish for'..

Labels are just mind/thoughts . . . limiting at that. The mind will go on and on, and that's what keeps us imprisoned in mind. Turning away from this, is pointing in the direction of freedom. John has found it through meditation/stillness. It's not everyone's path, but I see no point in being on here making comments that are negating this lovely, simple and loving man's true experience that so many of us are finding deep truths. What John speaks is very similar to my experience and yet if I sat with someon with a differing view, I could be okay with that. Labels, words, thoughts don't hold water (truth) in the bigger picture. Thank you John and Phil ~

It's hardly inconsistent for Christians to reject the teachings of Reiki. If you know Christian teaching - I am guessing you don't all that much - Reiki teaches that people themselves can summon spiritual gifts and healing powers through their own desires. You can disagree with Christianity all you like, but judging it for not accepting something that is completely, theologically contrary to it is ridiculous.

@Alexander Vering Good question. I suppose by nature it's more inclusive. So the criteria for being right with God is not unnecessarily restrictive (By the way, I'm not advocating complete relativism about the truth. I would say a religion that claims that God is an angry tyrant is wrong in a fundamental sense). We are living in a global age where people are much more in contact with other religions/philosophies/modern science/cultures etc. I think it is becoming increasingly difficult for the modern religious man and woman to assert that "My religion is right and your religion is wrong". The many-paths-to-God idea I think is a more tenable option for many these days. (Again, I'm not in favour of political correctness either. If one honestly believes that their religion is right and other religions are vastly inferior systems then that's their path). The universal picture is particularly more inclusive for the modern man or woman I think. To feel that you are on God's bad side because you simply can't subscribe to a package of dogmas has damaged the spiritual health of many good people I believe. This lack of flexibility in traditional systems has led to many people attempting to follow God through a tick box procedure. The universal approach also allows people to be more genuine about who they are and what they believe without feeling condemned. However, it's perhaps not for everyone. If one feels at home within a tradition and believes they have the absolute path to God then that's ok as long as they don't push the "heretics" down.
@sgt7
@sgt7 4 года назад
@Alexander Vering I would answer no to both of these questions. I think the ultimate goal should be a good relationship with God/union with God. A more universal religion will aide people better in helping them to establish this connection with God in my opinion. If we establish countless dogmas that need to be believed (like traditional religions) they become more of a barrier to God than a ladder - especially for the critical thinker or modern mind. For example, there are many people who have a genuine encounter with God without the need to tick any of the boxes that traditional religion prescribes. These are loving, intelligent, and honest people who are clearly following God and who clearly love God (as they understand him/her) and others. To tell these people that belief in a package of dogmas is more important than their personal (and sometimes quite profound) encounter with God is unhelpful. In fact, in some cases, they would be required to abandon their genuine prayerful experiences in exchange for approval form a religious authority. I believe Jesus encountered this problem in his day. The Pharisees were fixated on following rules/believing the right thing. Jesus was more concerned with a person's heart. Now I do agree that there is a balance to be struck. For example, there are people who follow their hearts and end up in dangerous cults. So religious guidance is important. I just think it should be flexible and inclusive to encompass the uniqueness of each person and their unique journey.

It seems to me John is many things, a lover of meditation, a mystic, a man who often gets lost in his own thoughts. I think we need a bit of integrity and admit what we are and are not. Whatever else John is, He is not a Christian. Not in the simple, broad, and classic understanding that a Christian is one who confesses those truths outlined in the Apostles Creed. John may sit in a church, he may use biblical terminology, but his ideas stray far from those taught in the bible.
@funkymoonboots1971
@funkymoonboots1971 6 лет назад
The sad thing is that the very belief system that Christians have is the very thing that prevents them ever experiencing a 'second coming', as they describe. Once we understand that Christ is a spiritual state of limitless consciousness that is ever present, it is presence, only then will we understand those that have tried to market the principle of life, as though God could be contained in a biblical can. How would anyone know Jesus or God anyway, what is that experience, stillness. It is all so simple. The ripples will radiate from the stillness as ripples do.. We are infinite beings of light playing with contrast and compromise. Blessings.
