Hey Dawn,🖐 Good afternoon! After living abroad for three years in Rota, Spain.,🌏the first year was the hardest sleeping on a hard floor in a sleeping bag with no padding no heat for the winter living next to the ocean where the coldness gets in your bones forget about air conditioning one meal a day and surviving off of water for the rest. Just living out of a suitcase no furniture kitchen appliances voltage adapters etc this was back in May 1979. Came back to America so Humbled and Grateful for the Experiences❤x5 that would never come from reading a book. When my ✈landed I kissed the ground, So Thankful to be Back!🙏I was to ashamed to tell my parents that my living conditions were so culture shock and not to mention the time zone that took longer to adjust than six months or reaching out for help. Cried alot got over it and picked myself up and started living- tammy/tim

Yes! And so many people simply need someone to smile and look them in the eyes! See if you have activities near you for adults with special needs and you can make an extraordinary difference just by being there, smiling, listening, helping move game pieces, getting one or two or three people up and dancing with you! It is so easy once you start, and so important to others and also very rewarding to you.

And sometimes it's even easier! I noticed a month or so ago that I hadn't seen my neighbor walking her dog for awhile. I took her some soup and asked how she was doing and she told me she'd been diagnosed with a heart condition and can't walk him anymore. I volunteered to take him when I go. Takes me only a couple minutes out of my way and makes her (and her dog!) so happy!

@@MichelleNovalee It makes me sad to here this. Several of my colleagues Patient Partners got RA at a young age, some even as a child. We have teachers in their 20's. Their lessons have the greatest impact, because they are closest in age to the medical students. We hope that our lessons stick, because they are personal stories as well as the technical part how to diagnose. I wish you all the best!

When you go from living with a hoarder to having a “normal” amount of stuff with lots of empty space, it’s life changing and so encouraging. It’s taking a while to get used to it but I’m making a point to dance in the empty spaces. I couldn’t believe how blind I was to what was in my sentimental box and that some stuff made me anxious and some stuff was just kept because it was from the 80s. I kept even less stuff and there were no regrets.

I volunteer with an organization called Icing Smiles. We provide celebration cakes for critically ill children and their siblings. I’ve been decorating cakes for 45 years and I get the most joy making these cakes. It has helped me increase my happiness and reduce my depression. I’ve also begun volunteering as a foster for herding dogs. Herding dogs are often purchased or adopted by people or families that don’t understand the unique needs of these animals. If provided with the proper physical and mental stimulation along with behavioral training they can be wonderful pets. But many are turned into shelters because their owners didn’t know what they were getting into and didn’t want the responsibility. So these dogs are often euthanized because they aren’t easy. So I train and take care of some while they wait for their furever family.

15 to 24 year olds also have less purpose in life. So many don't want to get a drivers license, do not want to work the hours necessary to be self supporting as parents seem to have not given them responsibilities in life...over indulged. I try to hire some of these kids over 18 years old. Nope they are not having it....show up on time? Actually work for 8 hours? To your point they are on social media a good part of the day. Keeping up with the influencers is very important to them, new make up, new clothes, traveling,, but without working.

The takeaway quote for me in this video at the end is "We all have something to offer." Dawn, those are words to live by and I have taken that deeply to heart for myself. I get older every year and have found myself getting happier every year even getting older, because I have found that I *DO* have the power to make a difference, even in the simplest and most immediate ways. I just ask myself every day - what have I done today to make the world a more comfortable place. And something as small as a smile or a thank you or a kind word can lift the spirits or the heart of whoever I meet and it multiplies from there. The big actions are important, too, and I donate what I can. But nothing matters as much as finding a way to invite joy into each day and if I can be a source to promote that, it's where life's meaning is found. ❤

A TED talk about 365give has also encouraged me to give to others. She gave 365 days a year with a very young kid! I give fruit to a homeless person who I often pass on my way to work. And it is not just the fruit that helps him, but also just being seen as a human being. I also recently had to pack all our stuff on the first floor and live downstairs for a few weeks. I was grateful that we already lived quite minimal, but I was still overwhelmed by all of the stuff I had to pack and surprised how little I need at hand to get by. So I created the following decluttering rules: 1. Imagine that you would have to pack all the stuff in a space (e.g. a closet). Do you feel overwhelmed? If yes, you need to declutter further! 2. Choose your favorite outfits to last a week or until you do laundry. Pack the rest away. You will be surprised how little you really need!

Your talking about teens/young adults having a happiness crisis made me appreciate how my church gives meaningful opportunities for teens to volunteer and empowers full-time volunteer missions for young adults around age 18-25 that can last for up to two years. When I went on an 18-month mission, I only had two suitcases the whole time but experienced so much and built cherished relationships with hundreds of people! We were missionaries in the Dominican Republic for approximately six years at a ministry that blesses( thru a christian bilingual education )the Haitian children living in villages or what they called “bateys” . I love that you guys are very involved in missions. My family and I learned how to live with less while in the mission field and that living on less is a blessing. Our children got to see families who live in a 9X9 home and had very little to live with but were so happy and thankful for many other things they have that we don’t. I think people don't look at the things that really bring joy. The more that's available, the more people want. I'm excited to be part of how we can contribute to the next step.

I do volunteer at Depression Association in Denmark, and just returned home from at Art & mental health workshop, feeling so inspired and grateful for this. Even if my life sometimes sucks, this volunteering brings me purpose even in the darker days. Volunteering definitely increases happiness level, so I encourage doing that as well!

This had me bawling the whole time. Growing up in poverty, I can say that you are making a huge difference for these people. I remember the clothes people gave and how much more respectable I felt in the “new clothes”. When my parents finally were able to build a modest house, the donated labor eased so much stress and probably cut a year off the process. It still took two years. God is the Great Provider. How wonderful to get to be His hands and feet to people.

Love! Love! Love! Truly inspiring Dawn! People don't realize how rewarding it is to volunteer. I signed up to help with sea turtle rescue as soon as I moved to FL, but the best was watching kids confidence expand in a volunteer school program, playing fun hands-on activities to increase their vocabulary, reading and spelling, as they didn't have the best home life for encouragement. I love people, young and old, and nursing homes are also a wonderful place to be as the people love to share their best stories and favorite memories. ❤ Thanks so much Dawn!! Keep being AWESOME!! I think getting our kids out to volunteer is an incredible experience to expand their heart and see value beyond the phone.

I love that you talked about how volunteering can make “other” people seem less scary. The media really plays apart in stirring up fear, and we hear about how people from other countries are all awful and scary. It’s not true! So many people are just looking for a better life and need help to find better opportunities. Thank you for sharing!

Sometimes we need a dear friend or relative to come in and help us face the hard task of going through a deceased home and organize. Sometimes it isn't a disceased loved one's family that needs help, it can be someone who has experienced trauma.

Thank you so so much for sharing, Dawn. And thank you for all you and your family have done in sharing the love of God with the world ❤️ I've been job hunting for five months after budget cuts left me unemployed, and what I have missed most is being in a position to give to others. This is a good reminder that I can certainly continue giving my time at church or with friends when I would otherwise be working, but it especially excites me for the days ahead when I can give that much more abundantly to those who are truly struggling. I really needed to see this beautiful message of hope and friendship. Thank you and God bless you!

I started volunteering last fall - it did 100% raise my happiness by A LOT! I wanted to volunteer for years but many volunteer organizations dont accomodate people with disabilities nor are they trauma informed. Because I have severe ptsd I need a few accomodatioms an finally found an organization ( a furniture bank in my neighbirhood) that had those options. I think volunteering can change your life at the same time as helping change others lives.

Dawn, this was such an important video. I happened to be chopping onions while I was watching… I would like to say that I know supporting local labor is important, but I do think that for the families involved, meeting you all, seeing how much you care and want to share your good fortune is not to be underestimated. Especially for the next generations. Meeting people from other countries and cultures is such a gift, for everyone involved. Please don‘t be ashamed or embarrassed about showing emotion. It only makes you more human, and being grateful for what you have and moved by other people‘s situations are emotions worth showing.

The local people were the happiest people I’ve ever met. The experiences changed my life in so many ways, and I wish everyone in the US could/would do some sort of mission trip for the same reason. It would truly unite us all.

I have decluttered enough so that I am freed up to volunteer for 2 organizations. I started with 1 non profit benefiting Foster families and foster youth volunteering once a week almost 3 years ago. Now I have added another morning at a Christian school assisting teachers with the mundane work of grading papers, copying, putting packets together, etc. They are so appreciative. I feel valued, appreciated, HAPPY and that I have purpose giving back to others. I thank Dawn for helping me declutter and organize my home over the past few years so that I am able to volunteer my time helping others.

I really love to see people working together to help each other! It’s so true that we need community support and interconnectedness in order to thrive. It’s so great that you uplift the importance of service to others and that youre leading by example. Another way we can make a big impact is by advocating for system wide changes like pushing Driscoll to pay their workers in Mexico a living wage so that they all have enough money to live in dignity- something as simple as writing letters and sending emails with a group of friends.

I wonder if another reason that 15-24 year olds are more unhappy recently is because they’re been told that everything is all about them, that their happiness should be paramount, and that they’re being oppressed (when they’re actually not). That would make me unhappy, too, if I was constantly being fed those messages!

Perhaps because when children go to school they are conditioned to pass or fail so by the time they're teenagers they feel like failures in many areas. And then the violence on TV and gaming and movies teenager's are exposed to isn't good either

You are speaking from my heart: we just came back from a family backpacking trip from Sri Lanka to Germany and all i could see was the "Comfort" all around us - and how it does not make me happy quiet die opposite. Of course i am glad overall the hygienic and medical standards are high and we are not facing poisonous animals or the likes, but the tranquility and the overall contentment of Lankans and the simplicity is dearly missed.❤ So cool you were able to help with your family in Mexico. I got do inspired after you shared your last mission there but really do not know how to get involved in something like that, where you can join with kids. Any ideas would be so welcome!❤❤❤

Your family blessed many by your mission work. Over Christmas I went to Africa on a mission trip. I never want to spend Christmas in the US again. We make it so commercialized. The children in the 3 orphanages we visited in Africa were SO THANKFUL for a new outfit, a pair of shoes, a small toy, and a piece of candy. But mostly they were thankful for the time our team spent with them. I thought we would be blessing them, but they blessed us immensely! It costs $10,000 to drill a well, and with God's favor, I was able to raise $15,000 to drill one while we were there, and another one to be drilled when others donate more towards the second well. I would love to go with you on your next mission trip, if you need another volunteer. Thank you for all you do, and please don't apologize for getting emotional! God bless you and your family!

I cannot help but think that if parents went out of their way to provide service opportunities for their kids, and modeled humility, empathy, and gratitude that everyone would be happier/better off. I know I need to be better about this with my little ones. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to do a full blown mission trip, but I am certain there are opportunities in my community. Time to do some research! 😁
