Took my filapina fiancé on a vaca to Thailand. We decided to live here for several reasons. Top of the list is that…”things actually WORK here !”. Cell service is 5G and is everywhere. My WiFi is fiber optic and I’m in a 5* condo for the same price as a 1* condo n Cavite. The roads/highways function “efficiently”…there are stop lights/traffic signals. No brownouts, excellent street food choices, cheaper vehicle options and ample accommodation choices are also key. Downside is language, however with technology…translators do help. We live on $2000 US a month and want for nothing. As a retired Canadian Thailand “ticks way more boxes” than the Ph. I would suggest everyone to visit the Ph and hopefully find your last love as I did…and bring them to Thailand. You’ll have the best of both worlds 😇.

Our family are all american citizens now, so it will be easier to travel. We plan on traveling internationally and making the Philippines our homebase.

Like i had mentioned in a preveous comment, the philippines is fun but will wear you down, its a place to vacation , not live permanently , We have a house there in subic and in ca. , My wife is filipina , We both cant stay there very long , 2 months max, The noise pollution, dogs, roosters ,motorcycles ,music ,people, will drive anyone crazy . all day all night. Coming back to california its quiet and relaxing when we get here.

I am leaving the Philippines after living here for twelve years. It is not because of the Philippines, it is because of the rising costs of maintaining my permanent residence in NA. I am going back to work because there are no jobs for foreigners in PH.

I am an American in a relationship with an intelligent, successful Filipina. We both currently work in the same country of which is not the U.S., nor the Philippines. We had plans to retire in the Philippines. However, we have decided to retire in Thailand for multiple reason. With experience living in both Thailand and the Philippines, where Thailand is today vs where the Philippines is today is like day and night. We will still visit the Philippines every year, but we will be purchasing a villa with its own swimming pool in Thailand of which we can fully own and will be leasing the land the villa sits on for 99 years transferrable to my son.

in the Philippines some will risk there life too get in front of you and so many just wonder onto the high way and dont even look I drove a truck in the US new York city LA no problem the PI is the most challenging place to drive I have ever seen

Living abroad is not always "living the dream" as many proclaim. Some guys are not prepared financially or try working abroad and not always successful. Culture is a bigger adjustment than folks think, some can adapt and some can't. I really like the Filipino people but I left after five years. I'm single and didn't have any lady problems and my Filipino landlord treated me very well. I just didn't enjoy ridding my motorcycle any more, because of selfish, inconsiderate drivers. Not trying to persuade any one from moving to the Philippines, just sharing my experience.

Getting the itch to do more time in Thailand each year. Here for total of 4 months this trip with stops in Malaysia, SIngapore, and Vietnam. Next year probably doing 6 months

RU-vidrs are actually very few and far between. Most are good for people thinking about moving here to help them understand that it's like to live here. But no matter how many channels you watch and how much you plan , you will never know if you can stay full time until you have been here a few years. I've been here 10 years now and have never returned to the US, not even a visit and no plans to do so. Everyone is different and no two situations are the same, the Philippines is not for everyone. Over the years I've found that attitude is what makes the difference between people that stay and go back home. As for expats going back home, guys have come and gone the same for years. I have about 10 expats in our area I know personally, some here much longer that myself and no one has ever gone back to stay, visits of course but not given up on living here.

Its not a trend. Its a case to case basis. It happens to all countries for various reasons.

It's all about patience. After awhile your patience will run out. I sure you will experience. Part time is the best way. After 6 months or so it's nice to get back to the US and take a deep breath.

36 years in The Philippines but working in The Middle East for 20 years and now retiring since 11 years and so happy. We have house with solar and well so our expenses are so minimal

I see it differently. I've just gone back to Australia for a little operation & l realise the Philippines is now my home.

I Australia gas is now $2.00 a litre and 4.5 litres equal a gallon that makes it $ 9.00 a gallon.

If they marry a younger girl and think they going to automaticly get survivor benefits might look at specifics cause if you pass might leave your wife and kids in bad situation. That might be why some go back for 5 years.

Expats in the Philippines can leave the Philippines anytime, they are foreigners they have thier own choise😊Philippines is a democratic country, maybe they can retire and stay in china or russia or n. Korea

I try to inform people who read these sections (when YT doesn't delete for no reason) that adjusting to life in the Philippines can be very difficult and even frustrating. Gleaning helpful 'how-to' information, and avoiding scams/skin tax is like pulling teeth sometimes. Most of us older folk, especially those who've haven't traveled much, need a helper here, either a trusted maid or partner to make the transition smoother. There's also the issue of setting up your banking and cash flow with an alternate fail safe. On a modest income, you cannot support many others, such as stepchildren and/or extended family. Please do a trial run FIRST before you commit to living or moving here.

Lots to think about. Thank your for talking about these various issues. As for health, I've been very active throughout life (good nutrition also) so heart is solid to 90's and prostate fine etc. but OH! those knees. I think I'll have to do that right one before relocating (although I hear it is not hard to go to Thailand and get quality work done). I work in health care and I see everyday what HTN and diabetes does to the body. Solid advise is, do not sell everything and go overseas with any metabolic problems. Once you commit yourselves, I can't imagine trying to come back on retired income. I did a quick calculation and $70k USD annual would do well there; obviously, you are in big trouble in the US. Just imagine the cost of a car in America is the same as a house in the Philippines! You mentioned some serious considerations but I gotta say, I'm 61 and post-divorce realizing that it is quite frankly over as far as the sexual marketplace. I'm super comfortable and at peace but to go the rest of my life without a woman? That alone gives me courage over all the potential cons of life (an adventure) in the Philippines.

Oh man that is normal for expats and tourists leving the Philippines please remember that our life is just a come and go situations. Also those who are leving may really have that no intentions to stay for long but to explore other places. You have to note also that there really are many who are really come to the country with the intentions to stay l9ng come whatever difficulties there maybe.

I'm sure that some people don't actually make plans before they move and then they find out that things aren't the way that they expected. They might not be able to adapt to living in a foreign country. A lot of the times I don't find it necessary for me to have a vehicle because I am usually by myself while my wife is with her family and I spend times with friends. We do that because she doesn't want me to be bored with nothing to do. If I need to go or want to go somewhere I'll just get a trike or some type of ride. Things are only as good as you make them in the Philippines. I spent 10 months in the Philippines with most of that time being when the pandemic started. I survived that and it didn't make me want to leave.

Your narrative style has vastly improved and involving Cecile is an entertaining dynamic. I like the savings binder you use; where can someone purchase one? Similar to what my Mom did but without the binder. She had a special way of folding and grouping bills until they totaled $100. I met my forever partner 6 years online. Slowly got to know each other and families. I was over for 8 months living with partner in rented house. First time for me leaving America. Yes there is massive poverty and garbage. I love the people and food. We bought a lot to build a house. Coming back this August, already shipped a large box of clothes and items.

Good list of why people move back. We are in Philippines but we came here after retirement from our jobs in USA. We sold everything and move back. Been here 9 years. Living here we got out debt. I had to go back in January of this year. Had not been back In 5 years. It was so expensive and cold. We have kids there in San Diego. But we could not wait to get back here. Every one has to decide what’s best for them. I am 71. I think before we reach 75 we move back because of our age. My wife is 6 years younger.

I can explain it in 3 words. Too many roosters. 😉

How difficult, and how long did it take for Cecile to become a citizen?

Short list of why I left PH after 2 years and moved to Cambodia.. Overpriced housing. If you spend the same amount in Cambodia, Thailand, or Vietnam then your place will be twice as big with everything functioning and working perfectly and somewhat luxurious. The PH diet was awful for me. It’s all salt, sugar, and the worst pieces of meat. All fat. Lots of carbs and everything deep fried. I had to make my own meals and that was challenging considering what was available to buy. The water in my shower smelled very toxic and irritated my skin. I lived in various places in Ph and they all had a huge problem with cockroaches, ants, and some cases the rats. Regardless of how luxurious a condo was, they all have this problem. Traffic in Manila. No family tourism. It’s all geared towards single middle aged men. I never saw a full family together on vacation there. Only men alone. Philippines should try and attract more family tourism. That would be a lot of money for the country. It’s too hot. I had to run my aircon almost 24/7, which is a huge expense. It’s about 5 degrees cooler here in Cambodia so it’s enough to never need aircon. I’m quite comfortable with a fan only. The dogs barking all night. They don’t stop. I’m not sure why the owners don’t teach them to hush. It goes ALL night long. There are more dogs where I live in Cambodia and they are all quiet all night long. Karaoke…. I love good music and I don’t mind when the neighbors party but every night until 4AM is a bit much. It’s hard to find real coffee at a coffee shop. It’s mostly 3-1 powder mix which is atrocious. Here in Cambodia I can walk to 10 places that have real espresso that’s better than anything at Starbucks. Fear of earthquakes (I felt some little ones), fear of tropical storms (the roof almost blew off), fear of war. Lack of ways to use my ATM card efficiently. Even the 7-11 near my home only took cash for their items. The ATMs are constantly out of cash. Some days I would go to 5 ATMs before I found one with money. Took hours. Also when you find one with money there can be a line. A long slow line. I’ve waited in an ATM line 30-45 minutes many times. Lack of fresh vegetables. It was hard for me to find clean healthy vegetables. A lot were old and bruised and the really nutritious vegetables are nowhere to be found. My internet and electric was always good but the water was an issue. One place had construction down the block so the water was off every day for 6 hours. I quickly moved homes because of this. But the place I moved to had a really low water pressure it takes so much time to rinse the shampoo out of my hair. I’m t was like a squirt gun. If you go to Hypermarket to buy groceries, that long line doesn’t move fast like in the West. Be prepared to be in line for up to an hour to purchase your groceries. I stopped going to Hypermarket because of this. I’m not retired or on vacation, so I need a job. There were little to no options for me in the Philippines. That is completely different here in Cambodia. I have multiple job offers of them competing for me. The one good thing I can say about the Philippines is the people are great. It’s a really safe country and you don’t need to worry about crime. Anyone and everyone will help you if you need assistance. They love to smile and they are genuinely happy regardless of any financial struggles. You can smile and say hi or talk to anyone and they will chat you back easily. That’s impossible to in the West nowadays. …also in the Philippines, Shoppee and Lazada are great!! Makes life easy. I picked Cambodia and it solved all my problems, and I’m spending less. None of those issues are a problem here. I’m blessed. The night life is alive here with amazing healthy nutritious street food, the best coffee, steaks, and the bars and clubs are great. 50 cent beers and good music. A lot of live music too. So many choices that you can find one that suits any theme. The housing is great for the money. Everything is clean and functions how it should. Safe. I get free WiFi, and free basic maid service, free parking. Those are all extra in Ph. I’m really healthy and happy here. The people are great here too. I don’t have an issue with language. Most people, especially younger, can speak basic English. Lots of things to do and see here. I will be here for many many years. This comment is purely subjective and opinions. I know some people weren’t happy in Cambodia and moved to Philippines. We are all different. But that’s my story.

If it's not your cup of tea why stay. If you enjoy travel to other countries and would like to have a partner to go with you a Filopina may not be your best choice as the Philippine passport is fairly week compared to some of the other SE Asian countries.

PH is paradise on earth for rich Filipinos only & not for foreigners to settle foreigners in PH can't own properties full business ownership have very limited rights & many are deported foreigners can be naturalized PH citizens if born & raised in PH like the prominent Spanish Ayala family which is not the case of clueless newcomers
