If YOUR version of Immersion requires a lot of deliberate practice, then yes, 'Immersion' does work. In my experience, 99% of people who use that word around me think it's a passive effort. That's why I say that. Anyhow go watch part 2! Love yall.
Here my unpopular opinion: it's okay to be mediocre at many things and just enjoy being in the moment every time you're doing one of your hobbies. It saves a lot of inner conflict and cultivates your mental health 👍
I think that’s fine actually, if that what ‘Results’ or even ‘good’ is to you. That’s totally okay imo. I think most people’s issue is knowing a lot but not doing much of anything due to lack of structure.
Definitely! It doesn't matter if you're great at something or awful at it (as long as no one is expecting you to be amazing, like if it was a paid job). At the end of the day, if you're doing something because you're interested in it and having a great time doing so as well, that's all that matters. Life is a journey... you find new things you enjoy here and there... lose interest in others... and the cycle continues. If you want to develop more skill in something, you just need to focus more of your time into that activity than others, but if you're just doing something to chill and enjoy it for what it is at your current skill level, then that's perfectly fine as well :)
Holy crap, I think I found my people. It’s so uncanny seeing so many people with similar interests. I’m working on calisthenics, parkour, piano, music, and coding as current hobbies. I used to write novels, do art, tennis, swim, cross country. I’m so glad I found this place, hope I can contribute to the community!
i'm lucky enough to have had a childhood before social media took off. and so the way i entertained myself as a child was by doing hobbies(drawing). a part of me feel like hobbies and learning a knew skill these days is rare on mass so i'm happy to watch people like you promote this stuff. creating more than consuming should be the standard.
Hey that’s actually kind of the reason I started this channel, to help people get off the computer and phone as much. I also grew up before social media and it was so nice. It’s a feeling everyone can get to though with effort I believe
@@Vihaan-yv9eh I have a video titled “don’t delete social media do this instead”, But if you don’t wanna watch that, I’d recommend maybe remove it for now, but then lock its use behind all your activities for the day once you are back on social media. “No social media until I study, practice and etc”. Then you’ll actually be able to use it guilt free. Or you will realize that you don’t even want to use social media Lol (this is where I am mostly). Hope that Idea helps.
En Masse** and I agree, "smartphones" generally dumbed people down. People don't have hobbies/skills anymore. The natural boredom that would lead to curiosity, learning, and entertaining oneself with a hobby is now interrupted by social media addiction.
@@user-to8qx2ih1d That's why it should be natural. You're just following where your interests take you. Don't be pressured by time and that you need to be a renaissance man quick.
It's so relieving there are people who actually pursue multiple interests without saying that it's impossible and we better stick to one thing for our lifetime. Thanks for the video!
For sure! Yeah others limiting beliefs often stem from them not being able get their own act together. Better to try on your own and figure things out! 👌
@@vaughngeneIt is also because some people want to do incredibly deep learning in one subject, so they choose to specialize. This can prove to be a very wise decision, depending on what you plan on doing with the information.
@@crazyfactsandcoolvids back in the day, people like our founding fathers, philosophers and the like never really specialized in one thing, most of them were actually other things like authors, artists, scientists, etc. Honing in on one thing is a relatively new trend in the human experience.

I never heard that until I googled it but Batman, makes sense. And I agree. I think we often think way too far ahead and just give up before we even start.
My current daily routine is an hour each : -piano -finger drumming -DJing - learning how to make music - blender ( it’s for work ) - graphic design ( for work ) - learning Chinese -reading -RU-vid So far I have gotten all of them down and have really good results ! On days I feel like I can’t do much I just say do 10-30 mins ; my favourite out of all this is playing the piano
I love your routine, but do you think i could do it too? Even though i do breakdancing and work out? Could i add 3d and music to it too? I feel so overwhelmded that i cant do anything. Especially with a normal work cause i have to pay all my bills. ;(

I've been so overwhelmed with people telling me that if I don't pick one thing then I'll never be great at anything. I'm so incredibly glad there are other people successfully doing lots of passionate things.
Yeah limiting beliefs from others are dangerous, I have a video about this actually, part 2 of managing multiple interests. I think it’s very overlooked but important!
Yes and no. Specialise in one, but continue interest in others. Those interests will aid the one u specialise in. U can eventually move speciality, but if u dont focus ur initial skills into one, u are just going to be like everyone else.
There is a saying in french that discribe that happen to people like us. They Say its a "curse" in french: "malédiction de Vinci". He was the proof that it is possible to be an expert on many fields. Thank you for your video man!
My problem is I wasted 20 years due to bad mental health and spending all my time on the computer so I have a lot of wasted time to make up for. I also feel like time goes so fast and that I won't have enough to learn and enjoy them all. I think yours is the realist productivity channel out here, thank you.
I'm 35 and none taken no worries. It's just that I have a ton of things I'm interested in and though I've dropped a bunch I'm still left with an embarrassing amount. I'm currently a homemaker and may still work part time in future, I'm married and may still have kids someday. I'm very stressed as I'm already struggling to manage my hobbies with only housework. I guess I feel like I don't want to make any sacrifices (other than the interests I will no longer pursue) and that I want to have it all, perhaps it's a bit selfish. Sorry for the vent and thank you for your kind words.
@@PQ_497I understand where you’re coming from! I feel the same way too! It’s this year that I can say I’m truly myself. Most of my life, I was dealing with mental health issues… so I coped by escapism. However, you don’t have to achieve everything at once. It gets overwhelming leading to the thought of “why even bother at this point”, don’t listen to that voice and sabotage yourself. Do what you can in the time you have. Remember, whether you doing something or not time goes on. So, it’s better to do something, achieve some of your goals than not doing anything at all. Also, don’t be hard on yourself for wasting time in the past, it in the past now. Start your new journey today. Don’t worry about the future and don’t dwell on the past. Sending you all the love and positivity 🙌🙌. Matthew 6:34 is “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” In Isaiah 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” God will make away for you an easy your worries!
I completely understand you. Because of mental health issues I wasted so much time too. However, don’t beat yourself up for wasting a time, it’s all in the past now. Your new journey starts the moment you forgive yourself and move on from your past. Remember, whether you’re working on your goals and hobbies or not time flies by. The thought of “not having enough time to work on all hobbies, so why even bother” is self sabotaging. You don’t have to achieve everything what matters is you start doing something. It’s better to achieve and excel in some of your hobbies than nothing. Try to avoid “all or nothing mindset”. Just go with the flow. A struggle I had was and still working on is fear of failure. So, I avoid doing anything, if I think I won’t have more time or I will fail. That mindset only lead to procrastination and regret later on my life. I now understand, we’re here to make mistakes, failing is not the end of the world, dwelling on my past only leads to emotional turmoil, and forgiving yourself and others is the start of your healing journey. Sorry for yapping 😂 I just got the feeling to say this to you! Sending you all love and positivity 🙌 Matthew 6:34 is “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” In Isaiah 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”
Appreciate it 🙏, and yeah I understand what you mean. On the bright side, I think you will appreciate your progress a lot more since you understand what the other side feels like. We all have our set backs, issues, and wasted time but I do think it makes us better off in the long run in most cases. Sounds like some motivational quote Lol but hopefully that makes sense.
Being a generalist is SO underrated. Marketing consultant, and it's frustrating how many small businesses get scammed bc they meet a specialist in ONE (of about a dozen) discipline who talks the client into spending 100% of their budget on the one speciality/discipline they happen to know and sell...whereas I'm capable of 100% customizing strategies and tactics to the CLIENT'S situation.
Tbf, it's hard to capitalize generalist skill, unless you're a T person who has one specific skill and know a lot of other stuffs. It's easier to contribute to society as a person who is good in python programming but sucks in sports and music than a person who can do anything from python programming to playing musical instruments, but at the basic level. Don't get me wrong, im a generalist myself. I can do a lot of things, ranging from swimming (all strokes from freestyle to butterfly), badminton, basketball, soccer, playing guitar, bass, harmonica, drum, above average rank in competitive gaming, basic linux scripting, etc. and i'm a mechanical engineer. But, i don't think im so good at a specific thing (beside engineering, which i don't really like, tbh) to the point that my skill is marketable. That's the main problem as a generalist, imo. We're lacking mastery in skills hence we can't contribute a lot to society as quick as specialist, unless we take entrepreneurship path which is much harder than traditional professional way.
It depends on the discipline, a good scientist for example should be pretty good in one discipline, working in manufacturing or marketing more generalised knowledge is better, but I think you’re right generalists are underrated.
There are general doctors, and specialist doctors. Neither one are a scam, they each fulfill a different purpose. Same with marketing. Your clients are not being scammed, it could just be they need the right approach. There are situations where specializing is better, and others where having a general knowledge is better. They are complimentary traits, hence why we live in a society where our complimentary skills and traits are set up to help one another.
I realized being a competent multi-passionate is a lot like habit-stacking. Designing any kind of balanced life requires focus, intention, experimentation / an open-handed mindset, and patience with time.
Exactly, and especially the last part. Wanting things too fast is dangerous, because we end up getting no results. But taking it day by day gets a lot of results 👌
That's right, but also that they teach you subjects in isolation instead of making children aware that, for example, language is connected to history, geography is connected to history, mathematics is connected to practical things, music is connected to physics, and so on and so forth. Also, children learn but they don't really know why and for what purpose they are learning something and how it can be useful to them in practical terms.
@@frankgradus9474 Seriously I feel like i would have learned some of the stuff in physics a bit more easily if we were taught the history behind it and why that concept was originally developed
The worst thing is that I have so much interest that it's hard to keep track of most of them. Waking up everyday and having different goals occupying my mind is not good for mental health. This is the problem of the modern internet, everyone wants your attention which makes you more ambitious, but more bloated with ideas, unoriginal ideas mostly. Looking back, it really is a matter of focus and discipline. Being consistent with one thing and setting aside other things for other days, making peace with them day by day per se.
Yes exactly, the main point of these last two videos is exactly that. There nothing you are really missing out on by finding more content. This includes mine! Far better for you to just go practice or study and figure things out as you go!
Same here bro! i literally have 6-7 different hobbies/passion since im a kid and i just feel its too much. I really need to prioritize and reduce them, and this is the hardest part cuz i cant, i dont wanna get rid of any. Exactly the opposite, i find more and more things that make me excited without looking for one. (Its crazy that i know a lot of people who doesnt have any hobbies and doesnt get excited about anything even if they are searching for it…) Its really hard to imagine with my head 😅. So yeah i think this is the hard part for us who can be excited about a lot of things, to organize and manage time, energy and focus just like Vaugh said. But we got this ❤
I am PhD in physics (actually, i'm scientist now). I have hobbies like a piano playing, guitar playing, biking, carrying weights on gym, inline-roller skating, swimming, and maybe even cooking or baked meals. Maybe not in all, I'm good, but with those hobbies I feel more relaxed in my job.
Nice, Yeah I find that it just feels good overall to do things that you know are progressing you in some way. Even if it's just to pass time (that would otherwise be spent scrolling or whatever). That's awesome!
"And even now, I'm still kind of confused at my own life. And... I live my own life every day." Love it. This is so real. People need to hear that more.
I have once received the compliment of being a "man of many talents", which is because I've been living my life exactly as stated in this video. From video games, playing the piano/guitar, sports, programming, graphic design, cooking... It's fun to do stuff, and mastering one thing and one thing only is fine, but unless I was intending on doing this one thing competitively/professionally, I don't see the point in being forced to make a choice in what I do to enjoy!
I recently found you channel and I feel very relieved seeing that there are people out there that actually BELIEVE that it's possible to be good at several things, many people around me tell me that I exaggerate, that it's too much for me, that I'm not going to get anywhere if I keep on doing a lot of things. But, everyone can choose what to do with their OWN LIFE. Thanks for your words, Vaughn. Saludos desde México 🇲🇽👋
I discovered that I have a lot of interests only in my 40s. Now I am 50. 1. Visual effects compositing and 3D is my main job 2. Guitar and music making in Daw. (Not good at it) 3. Watercolor painting (only around summer) 4. Disc golf (not good at it but it is fun) 5. Programming in Python (not good at it) 6. Reading books and watching Netflix 7. RU-vid (main distraction I want to get rid of) 8. Soroban (abacus for some adding and subtracting at home) 9. Rubic’s cube 3x3 (average solving time 65 seconds) 10. 2D animation (latest interest since I became a father at 48) 11. Journaling (started at 45) 12. Photography (doing this most of my life since I was 12) 13. Investing in stock and index funds (since 43)
This is genius. Learning from 0 is really hard. If you start to learn your every interest from 0 at the same time you won't have time nor energy, nor focus, nor motivation. You have to space the learning from zero or the deep learning processes, basically "the hard part". If you build your routine with 10 tasks you're going to drop it... You have make sure you can do a task easily before adding another one! And thank you for pointing out difference of finding out what way follow to get the skill (1%) vs. the time and effort that goes into actually acquiring the skill (99%)... I easily overlook and forget that... :')
Skateboarding, snowboarding, biking, making music (3-4 different genre), drawing, animating (both 2d and 3d), story/screenwriting, working out and mobility, oh and a lot of psychology yes. Im so glad ive found thid video, not to mention the comment section haha❤love yall
Wow, I've never believed i would find other like-minded people but here I am. Multiple languages, photography, dance choreography, fitness, guitar, piano, drawing, were the main interests and yet i never got good at any of them. Possibly bc i was overwhelming myself.
I'm tennis player, musician, producer, illustrator, dancer and I have an PhD in neuroscience. Learning its the only thing that I enjoy more haha. I don't really understand how difficult is for other people learning new thing. But for me, its exiting.
I got summoned here a multi-hobbyist! The comment section is full of people with whome i share similare hobbies and its beautiful to see. I'm someone that can't stand doing one thing alone, so liking doings several things at once has always been a part of who i am. Some things i have tried out of curiousity and quickly learned, i don't really enjoy doing them, other things have been a constant in my life and haven't lost the joy and self-challenging aspects i feel while doing them. I recommend giving yourself some time to lesrn what you like and what you don't, what fits your schedule, what you can do both indoor and outdoors.
Yo this channel is a gem! This video is very relatable. My stuff used to be video games, yoyo, rubric’s cube, aikido. Side note: the most difficult was yoyo. I mastered this thing and went to a national competition, but damn I was spending like 14 hours per day on it. Fine motor skills is something I couldn’t just easily do. Now I’m into cycling, reading, programming, and a bit of piano. Learning Portuguese (moved to Lisbon), and English is not my first language. Sometimes I still play videogames (mostly nintendo) and solve different rubic cubes/puzzles to keep my mind clear and calm. Recently I started thinking that I’m wasting my time because I have so many interests. This video reminded me everything and I feel much better. Thank you! I’m happy to become your subscriber.
thank you! and nice, those are actually pretty cool. I was into yoyo for a bit but had the same exp so that's funny Lol. (no competitions though, just in my room).
This video is beyond relatable man. I got burned out a couple months ago because my New Year’s resolutions was a huge list of reading 24 books, hitting 1,000lbs SBD total, running a marathon, hitting sub 30 seconds on Rubik’s Cube, picking up guitar again, hitting 1500 chess rating, etc and it was just way too much. I actually started therapy a couple months ago to address a lot of these thought patterns and feeling like I should be doing more but I’ve learned that hobbies and novelty are a huge aspect of my life. I’ve stuck with the core hobbies that I genuinely enjoy and that don’t take energy to commit to and slowly adding things that interest me over time. It’s a really fun process
Bro I relate on so many things. - I play Guitar and Piano - I did martial arts when I was a teen (taekwondo) - Im a software engineer (my 9-5) - I'm learning Japanese right now - I play video games I grew up knowing that im good at many things and always looked at being jack of all trades as a good thing until I started my YT channel where so many gurus would say "niche down" and then I started looking at myself as a "Master of none" and after 6 years or so, Im ok with me being a Jack of all trades again because I realized I might be master of none but its better than being master of one. To me its all about calendar blocks and set a time for each one of my interests. Great Video!
Nice, yeah it is a far more fulfilling life to be a jack of all trades, because after a certain point, the benefits drop off a LOT. I will explain why in a future video to help ease the idea more!
Funny enough, this is misquoted often, but the FULL original quote is: "A jack of all trades is a master of none, BUT oftentimes better than a master of one"
This community is bliss! You radiate so much that all of the people attracted down here are on the same wavelength or at least harmonious to it. 🎉 What you're doing is alchemy brother. So happy to come across you by a chance. It's energy transmutation you're channeling from one domain to another. Love that you also use the phrase "bled over". That's what I call it in a recording studio setting (sound bleed from any monitor like headphones to a mic, or when recording multiple instruments simultaneously and bleed into each other's mics the closer they are). Absolutely agree with a 101% of all you've said. You've inspired me today. Prayers and love your way brother. 🙏❤️ P. S - I honestly think you either have naturally a stronger inclination towards discipline, either thanks to military, family, social environment factors, upbringing, genetics etc, but I think that's why it looks to me like it's more natural for you to connect the 12h spent playing games and transmute them into the real life game, attribute and reapply now in your day to day more productively. I need to try it out first really before I try to speak on the matter, yet I've been living in The Valley my whole life, and my erratic mind cannot help but entertain the scenarios and play them all out untill the end. I see myself trying to play the game of life without the knowledge and confidence that I'd have a second life/attempt/go at it. Real life is less visually assuring to foresee myself how I want to develop and grow in the future, proofs worth the work are mostly evident longterm alike delayed gratification, and this story itself I'm telling myself, conditioned throughout the years all the way from prenatal/perinatal until now, all of those stemming from beliefs, and proofs of those beliefs I've seen reflections of in the world around me - now solidified as convictions - all of those factors seem to me as the main obstacle that'll prevent me from seeing, playing and applying in life as in a game and invest those hours productively in this reality, rather than in escapisms. But I guess I only answered my own question here as the Stoics put it "The Obstacle Is The Way". Thank you for allowing for a space where we can speak our minds on thought provocative conversations either with you, the community, or with our own crazy selves like I just did. 😂 You're also incredibly compassionate, resilient and understanding if you made it this far down. 😌 💔❤️🧡💛💚💙💜❤️🔥 You all have mend my heart today. 🙇♂️

It’s so funny having these hobbies/skills that are semi-developed to a level but still having that major wishlist… for me I love films and i’m decent at video editing, CG VFX, sound design, and already the skill ceiling for each of those is massive but I still find myself wanting to learn more about shooting films, music production, at some point acquire some outdoors skills, pick up another language haha… it feels like there are never enough hours in the day, but this video was a nice little reality check! thank you for making it!

I love your videos Vaughn. I currently live in Japan and I am trying to self-study for the Japanese proficiency test. I also have a lot of similar interests such as bass, web development, and creating art. I just started a RU-vid channel to hopefully keep me accountable. It is very hard for me to focus. Watching your videos have been helpful. I had set small goals to help me continue learning my interests. Your previous advice on continuing to stick with one set of videos / mastering one video was very helpful too. I have come to this conclusion that I should stick with one type of material for learning Japanese before moving onto the next type of material. I keep adding so much that it paralysed me sometimes. I can not wait to see more from you!
Oh nice! We do have a lot of common. And thank you! 🙏 looking forward to making more. & yes absolutely, especially for things like Japanese and Music which require a LOT of hours of repetition in order to make it subconscious. Happy to see you’re finding them useful! I miss Japan so much as a side note Lol and can’t wait to move back and hang with my friends there again. And the food. I can write a whole essay on that alone…
The algorithm just connected me to my long lost brother. Aside from the military part, I’ve learned/played (video games and instruments)/watched (anime) a lot of the same stuff. Thank you for posting this video! It’s easy to not be intentional about the things you’re learning just by living life, and this really helps give it a framework.
even a video like this cant help me, i have so many interests it is unbelievable. I could never choose 2 or 3 of them over dozens. Im a generalist, and i think i now why. Autistic and ADHD people (i have both) have something thats called special interests; well, there are different terms, one of those is special interest, other one is hyperfixation. The hyperfix is kinda like, you get obsesses with something, and start intensely researching/consuming/enjoying it for some time, like, it could be 2 weeks, it could be 2 months, you know, and then the obsession disappears and you go to the next thing. Special interest is like hyperfixation but on a grand scale, its a hyperfixation that never goes away in your life. For example, i, for most of my life, would have said that my biggest special interest is videogames, or science. But recently i realized its not. The reason im such a generalist and i look for any type of knowledge is because of my biggest special interest, which was difficult to identify. My most important, biggest, special interest, is the understanding of reality. Anything that is part of reality, anything that works under rules, any kind of reasoning, or proof, or thinking. Any kind of system. All of it. I need to understand all of it. Every possible system or rule. Thats my special interest, and thats weird because it has some unexpected consequences, like the need for being a generalist (thats more expected) or the indecision that comes with it. I cant choose just one or two things because in the long term, overall, i want to learn everything. I know this goal may seem unrealistic to most people, but remember the world is going to change in the next 10 years, in many multiple senses, so it may be possible to understand everything throughout the centuries. I really dont know. But i will never stop consuming knowledge
I think having a lot of knowledge about different subjects is a good interest of its own. Maybe not 'doing' them all per say, but having a lot of information and understanding about them may be all you actually want to do. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
I totally feel you…. I have the same. My curiosity is unstoppable even since im little kid. I can get obsessed with every tiny thing easily. Also have 7-8 hobbies currently. Im looking for the deepest answers until i dont figure them out. And i always do. Its super hard and exhausting, but atnthe same time its incridebly valuable and unique! So all my respect and love. (Btw i dont have diagnosis but 99% i have both too… maybe i should get the "papers" too)
As long as you get along with yourself and take responsibility for everything that happens in your life, Being single and living alone gives you so much peace, focus and power. Some people just can't sit five minutes by themselves.. always seeking to get distracted with something just to not face discomfort.
Congrats on stopping! That’s awesome. , I have a friend who stopped cold turkey and never went back. He replaced it with exercises and good hobbies also 👌 . And appreciate it 🙏
5:00 Immersion definitely does not work. Many people go to another country and learn nothing while conversely many others acquire fluency in a language without traveling.
Yeah that’s the point I should have made clearer Lol, people have been asking me in the comments what I mean. So I think I’ll pin this for future reference. And to add I mean passive immersion. If you do deliberate practice (regardless of where you are) that is beneficial of course. If you think moving somewhere will make you fluent without doing deliberate practice you are mistaken. That’s my point. Immersion typically means passive (if your definition is different then this doesn’t apply to you). Deliberate practice = getting results. In which you definitely don’t need to be in that country for. 👌
It can work if you're earnest. My brother lived in Mexico for a year- not knowing a lick of Spanish- and came back nearly fluent. It was a necessity for him, and his dedication paid off.
I agree. I've been living in Japan for seven years and working in a fully Japanese environment for two years, yet I still struggle with the language at work. I can communicate well in daily conversations, but my language skills have been deteriorating since I moved here because I'm not actively studying it.
Immersion "can" work. But it's not as efficient or effective as just dedicated study time and dedicated conversation practice. You can pay like 20 bucks a month on fiver for some sessions to practice any language you want. Compare that to paying hundreds/thousands to go stay in a foreign country and mostly be around tourists who don't speak the language. There are even language discords/websites to do practice with others for free.
Immersion works if you have the intention to actually be immersed. I lived in Saudi for 10 years and never got fluent. I visited Korea for 5 days and I can speak better Korean than Arabic.
Great video, I'm also glad I found out there's more people like me out there. Another good thing about having many interests is we always have something to spend time on, we hardly get bored: internet is down, let me just read a book or play an instrument; not feeling like going out, well just stay home playing a video game or watching a movie in that language you're learning. The choices are practically limitless. The thing that scares me about starting my own family is having to say goodbye to all of this😢
Exactly! boredom is almost never there. And yeah I think with a family there will be less time, but nothing bad because that will be more important anyways. That's what I see in others. You don't feel like you are missing out because you have something more important. Plus you can still manage the other time you have.
i been thinkin alot about how alot of my interests and sparks all fall under the umbrella of game design: videogames, art, music, coding, storytelling, production, etc
youtube.com/@vaughngenemusic?si=SXw4YTez-jL-FC1S This is my music channel incase more people ask. I have no organization there and my mixing sucks Lol, but I’ll upload more there one day. Including some music I make for this.
Take a step back from consuming content, maybe consider unsubbing too from things (including my channel) and that may help! Just come back when you have some interests Lol. Best of luck tho.
Guitar was my main focus and passion since the age of 5. Over a decade later I started learning BJJ, running, piano, getting all A’s in school and a RU-vid Channel. I learn EVERYTHING so much faster now because my brain is getting better at the process of learning something new. I really relate to you and this video!
I feel this where im interested in a lot of different things. Fitness, guitar, piano, writing, reading, gardening, cooking, dog training, learning Portuguese & Spanish.
I’ve narrowed down my interests based on my lifestyle and what I’m physically capable of doing: I write poems and songs, I already know how to read sheet music so I have a variety of instruments I enjoy playing which is fun to go along with my songs. I also enjoy reading a lot which influences my song writing and gives me ideas. Because I love to research etc I end up meeting a variety of people which also influences my songs and music. Great video!
For how I do it, I use my own custom 3/6 hobby method. I choose three hobbies-drawing, content creation, and learning how to play the piano-and stick with those for six months, dedicating each week to a different hobby. Week 1: drawing Week 2: content creation Week 3: learning piano Repeat. After those six months, I take out a notebook and jot down key points to help me remember important aspects for when I return to those hobbies. Then, I pick three new hobbies for the next six months. This method not only gives me time to learn or master parts of my interests, but also allows me to maintain a balance without giving up on other hobbies. Also sorry if this is too long😅
@@vaughngene 😊thank you I also use a '1/2 hobby method,' where I focus on one hobby for two months. Since there are 12 months in a year, that means I can complete six hobbies within a year just the same amount of hobbies as the other one. But I only use this when I’m really invested in more than one hobby. Both custom methods are balanced 1️⃣ method for when i am really invested a couple of hobbies and want to see more results 2️⃣ method for when l want to do a bunch of hobbies while also wanting to equal the amount of attention for all of them instead of a few.
Thank you for this video! I've had a feeling for almost 10 years now that I have too many irons in the fire. I haven't really met people with similar struggles. I've thought I'm alone with this. Having too many interests can drive you to eating and sleeping problems, losing grip to everything you do and finally depression. Trust me I'm talking from experience. Even thought from the outside my life has been seen as normal and I've done fairly ok in academic and work environments I've just started to get a grip of my life in recent years. I wish I would have seen this video 5 years ago. Greetings from Finland ❤
Learning is my favorite hobby. I'll bet pretty much everyone posting here knows how they learn best, and can learn and develop at an accelerated rate. Poetry, narrative fiction, motion graphics and visual effects, 3d modeling and animation, computer programming, game design and development, short animated films, traditional painting and illustration, clay modeling, music production, guitar, piano, hvac, pipefitting, welding, soldering, brazing, renovating homes and apartments, plumbing, electrical, low voltage control system, A/V systems, hiking, video games, long distance cycling, swimning. and so on. I love all of it, and wish I didn't have to sleep so I could do 30% more of it across a lifetime. Being married with 3 children and all of life's responsibilities that go along with it doesn't leave exorbitant amounts of time to cultivate new skills anymore, but I still find time to ensure my own sanity is taken care of by participating in the things I enjoy. You're absolutely right about the confidence bit. Developing skills takes time, energy, confidence, and perseverance. To be able struggle through the hard parts of any experience and find the joy and reward on the other side despite whatever our brain chemistry tells us to feel is a skill in and of itself. Great video. 👍
Nice you are the true renaissance individual. Learning just feels good like you said, even overcoming the struggles. & The sleeping part I resonate with so much, I get upset when I have to sleep sometimes Lol. That’s awesome to keep that same drive with a family too! And thank you! 🙏
You have the perfect amount of chill for this kind of content; you remind me of my personal trainer. I wanna reduce my screen time, learn my mother’s language, start a comic, and I appreciate someone telling me to do it without demeaning me or yelling in my face.
As a former personal trainer that’s funny to hear Lol. I have never believed in aggressive teaching though yeah. The nervous system doesn’t operate that way. Fear elicits the pre-programmed response. But people try to use fear to teach which just isn’t as effective. It works. Just not as effective.
Dude, you're like my mirror. 😂 Lived in Japan, learnt it, into graphic design, photography, music.. even the played-videogames-like-a-freak-all-day part. I wish I had a similar mindset than you and developped that confidence:) Thanks for sharing
I agree so hard with the "Max Capacity" part, especially with thinking of working on your hobbies like video games. It's so important for people to not think of their hobbies as work. As a guitar player for about 7 years now, I always try to hook my friends into music and instruments, for those who do, I encourage them to think of their hobby like they're scrolling on tiktok or whatever, it shouldn't be work, it should be fun, enjoyable and at their own pace and then over time, they'd should just practice for fun.
Thank you man, everyone has been telling me that it’s impossible to have several hobbies ,activities you enjoy and you are good at cause you will end up doing none of them...Although if you think about it it is really about your focus and the way you see it.
For me its guitar, piano, music, japanese, spanish, russian, video games, movies, travel, photography and many more. i can never figure out what to pursue. the most important thing is dont burn yourself out and do a little bit of each a day. or even take a break from the few. It took me until i was 25 to decide my career. Im still thinking about other options like law, economics, and business. I feel so bad i fant get to all of them.
This video has given me back something I thought I had lost -- an openness to what is possible FOR ME. It's not optimism. It's a certainty. I realized I have felt trapped in indecision, pursuing nothing specific because I was afraid choosing a thing to pursue meant deciding never to pursue so many other things. Choosing felt like I would be cutting out just one part of myself and throwing the rest of me away. Your light analogy is spot on. I see now how much light I'm already spilling out all over the place. I used to be a laser beam when I was younger, and it felt incredible. The light hasn't left. I can still feel it in there. THANK YOU.
Very Nice, glad I could help! I do find that a lot of us as 'laser beams' when we are younger, but then we take on all this info and whatnot and start to hesitate more. Me included. Getting back to that kid for of just doing things is quite peaceful though!
i’m good at sports and music. because i’ve been doing BOTH for the same amount of time. I didn’t focus on just one entirely. Most ppl who do that are unheard of. Because majority of ppl have different interests. All of the professionals you know value something else as a hobby.
I honestly think having many skills, even if they're less developed than people who master a single skill, has given me a far more interesting life and opened up far more opportunities
Brooo this is exactly what I needed. Like wtf I didn’t think this many people had this issue. I’m trying to learn drums, bass, singing, piano, music production, photography, Hebrew, and lyricism. Crazy man, thanks for this video
This is the first video of someone having the same problem with hobbies as me and also a similar story with music and fighting. But what I agree with you the most is that everyone is different and something might not work for you that works for me. While watching this video I felt like I was listening to my self and I want to thank you for that 🙏 ❤
As someone who has multiple hobbies that I’d like to get good at, I’m so happy to have found this channel. My biggest challenge in concentrating on my hobbies is anxiety. I’ve struggled with anxiety most of my life and when it gets bad, it really hampers my ability to focus on things. But I’m working on it. Thanks for your insights. Really helps.
Bro you explain struggle my accurately. I do art and programming, writing, animation. Its been bugging me how i havent done programming for the past few days.
Such a valuable chat, bro. I’m a classical guitarist but I’m still in this process of learning the fretboard and showing up as often as I can. Thank you for sharing so many priceless insights.
Thank you for your wisdom man. I've always struggling on thinking that I'm actually wasting my time. You see is even more difficult when you have a regular life, living with your partner, paying the bills and such. I get derailed always thinking that my passion will not come to fruition (since my passion right now arenot paying the bills). But I know money is never the point. I will now try to focus on one thing at a time!
Damn I needed this video 🔥 my main hobby was music production, but got discouraged when my computer broke. Then picked up skateboarding. Now skateboarding is that thing that I feel weird going a couple days without. Trying to fit back time to get back on music also
Bro RU-vids algorithm is on point! Im personally struggling with this exact stuff... I want to become good in the gym, want to play guitar, drums, want to be good at school, want to play sports, just too much stuff and I've definitely noticed that I just am not seeing the results I want to because I'm trying to do too much stuff at the same time!
Really loved this piece of advice! I feel lost many times with my mind interested in so many different stuff, I’m like a bee trying to decide what’s the best flower to choose, and after I while I get dizzy and I end up doing nothing. Loved the “ambient light” to “laser” mode
I’ve made my home such a entertaining space by simple taking up new hobbies and disconnecting from social media for the most part. From learning new languages, playing the drums , working out and Tech skills. You are right though. It’s hard to focus without a schedule and setting realistic goals.
This was a really good watch. I've been into programming, game design, drawing, 3D modelling, drumming, rock climbing, boxing, photography and videography, video editing and animation, as well as writing, and I always found it difficult to decide what I wanted to be. In the end I chose game design, and as you could imagine, I think it's nice to have a lot in your portfolio. It's an advantage !!
Another thing you can do to keep focused and consequent is writing a list of your activities (vertically) and the days of the week/month (horizontally), then add a cross or dot for every activity you do in a day. You'll feel the pressure of not skipping too many days and keep some continuity. Be aware that this can lead to stress and should be seen as a gentle reminder, not as a list of chores you need to do just to have that damn spot on the list. Remember: it's about enjoying whatever you decide to do, not starting to hating it.
Thank you for making this video. I especially appreciate you not loading it with stock footage, it was nice just to listen to you talk. I feel like I got something from it. A while back I decided to try to move from consuming to creating, and what you said about creativity rang true.
Yeah I like the café vibe personally, I can't watch videos that have all that extra stuff going on. Doesn't feel like I am talking to a person. And nice, glad you got on the right path. Consuming is great and we all need it, but I know it's easy for us to do a little too much sometimes.
Hi,i totally agree with you. I’m also doing guitar, Muay Thai, leaning vietnamese, toast master etc. One thing l learnt is that to progress from one level to the next, i must always remember where i’m now. Am i in the Basic, intermediate or in the advanced level. This is to ensure that i don’t repeat myself over and over again in that level. I need to learn to move to the next level by learning new words, style of playing and by watching videos. For daily practise, i will plan out my day by allocating certain hours to a particular pursuit. In this way i will be able to do all those things i setup to- do. I find learning new words most effective in the morning when my mind is still fresh. Often time, i will need to enrol for a class to learn new skills. Knowledge can be acquired online but you do need someone better than you to guide you something on practical stuff, this will definitely shorten your learning curve. Appreciate if i can hear your opinion on these approaches 👍
as long as you practice new material consistently you'll be fine. Sound like you already had that idea. My philosophy for learning is that practice should be 99% somewhat uncomfortable. This way you will almost never plateau. And classes are fine too for some things. Just take that and apply it how you need to.
There's so many things I wanted to do. But you're right. I should tackle it one thing at a time. I also feel strange when i stop doing the things I'm interested in.
