I am 41 and have assessment invites for two major European airlines next week :P. Those are for my very first job as a commercial pilot. So as DutchPilotGirl says: keep focussed, top fit and DEDICATED (and very resilient against disappointing moments) and everything is possible!
unfortunatly i had not the opportunity of rich parents...so i have been working very hard the last years and safe every penny for my atpl and type-rating.------> atpl finished in the end of october 2017-------> 2 month later i passed the assessment.... I still can't believe it... :D
CLM , as DutchPilotGirl said, it’s harder, not impossible. The comments on this video also state that people much older than you (including me) still are able to get their dreams reality. But as we all say, you have to be extremely dedicated. So we can’t tell you, “do it or don’t”, it’s entirely up to your personal situation. I think your age is at the moment not a major issue. But... the market is good now, no one knows how it will be at the moment you have finished. It’s like a stock-market... so if you really want to pursue this, look carefully which school you choose. Many airlines have cadet programs now, or go for one that has good connections with airlines. Where are you from? I am willing to advise you, PM me if you want.
I am 78 years old and I have no hope of ever being able to fly a real airplane, but I really want to fly in a professional flight simulator on a Boeing 737 to have the sensations. In view of this I am training on my computer with X-Plane. For the moment I only do runs (opstijgen en landen) with almost always perfect landing! Which encourages me a lot.
Jason Tooke that’s my plan! Unless the age gets raised. SIC right now. Everyone starts there. Upgrade should be fast. 20 months or so is my guess. I made it all the way through and I’m holding a line.
John Lee I started in my 20s in 1984. I flew regularly till 1992 doing Charter work and flight instruction. Then left flying till 1998 when I renewed my CFII via check ride. Flew a few times then was idle. I was hired by the airline at 55 with 2300 hours. 100 multi and around 150 instrument. I passed training and am currently flying the line.
31? Maybe 10-15 years ago but I don't think that's true these days. More and more people these days are starting their training from zero hours in their late 20s, early/mid 30s. In my flying school (Australia) most students I've come across is in this age group. Things are different in various part of the world but a blank statement saying most airlines don't hire above 31 years of age is unnecessarily discouraging and simply not true.
I second that. Although not the first time I hear this. I read a book from a pensioner, who was bored after retirement and became a private pilot. Author: Helmut Rathert, Title: "Flieg,Großvater, flieg!". Nowadays only available in second-hand market, but still a lot of fun to read.
Actually my employer (a US Legacy airline) hired a 62 year old two years ago. In the US we are getting a lot of older flight crew. Me, I have 30+ years in....
I didn't start flying until I was 72 years old. I am now 76, and I was just hired by a large commercial airline! It's surreal sitting behind the controls of a 747. The pilots know I fly, so they sometimes let me up there to check things out. I would love to fly something like that, but I obviously got into flying way late!
I'm 63...working hard all my life to support my family. Now I am finally able to pursue my passion. Your comment here Mr Kingsley really inspired me and I am definitely going for it. I'm staring in June 2023! Thank You Sir!
@@kevinong8005 Wow, that’s awesome! So many people see retirement as a second chance to pursue their real passions. I know I did. Might as well spend the next few decades doing what you love, right?
@@Sirikazy I didn’t fly for the airline. I wrote that poorly I know, sounds like that’s what I was saying. I got my private pilots license in my mid 70s. I got hired as a flight attendant. I don’t do it anymore though, turned out to be a bit much for my old ass. But the pilots would sometimes let me Sit in the big seat - Obviously not while we were flying.
Im 35. And still dreaming of becoming a pilot one day. Maybe a mid sized jet like 737 or a320. That is my ultimate goal. Maybe I'll finish my training at 38-40. What I can do is be positive. I believe when there's a will there's a way
I actually learned some companies prefer hiring pilots a little older, like between 30 and 40 because of maturity. I heard stories of first officers becoming captains as young as 24, but it's such a big responsibility to put a plane with hundreds of lives on the hands of someone so young, I think the sweetspot for companies should be people in their 30's to be honest. If I am on a plane and you tell me my captain is a 50 year old with plenty of experience, I surely would feel safer than hearing its a 25 young dude, even knowing all the training there is to be becoming a pilot, surely feels safer flying with someone older on the cockpit. I'm really glad to hear people getting hired after 30 or 40s.
Let's just say hearing what you shared about your grandfather .. I just turned 60 .. Completed ground school at age 18 in high school .. Later had an opportunity to become a military pilot in my 20s .. It didn't work out as planned for various reasons .. This year I plan to get my private certificate .. I have no desire to fly for the airlines or even charted service .. My goal is to own and fly my own private business jet .. Either a Premier 1A or a Phenom 300 .. DutchPilotGirl, I might just look you up and offer you a ride some day .. And thank this pretty and charmingly goofy blonde for the inspiration .. To complete a long lost goal in life ..
I think you forgot to mention that sometimes it depends on how well connected you are in aviation and also some pay to fly/line training programs aren’t too strict on age
Can someone help me out with this one? When I was 11, I wanted to become a pilot flying for an airline company. People around me told me I could not become one, because I am wearing glasses. In other words, aspiring people cannot become pilots if they are wearing glasses already. They are thought to make more mistakes. Truth or urban myth?
I turned 29 in december and I just started. If you've got your head on straight, I don't think it'll be THAT difficult to find a job in the near future, especially with the growing pilot shortage in the "western world". Obviously, it might be a little trickier if you're going to big-airline route, but there's so many different paths to chose. Some might go the business route, some are happy with regional airliners, some want to do bush-flying, then there's also surveying, crop dusting etc.
I’d like to learn to fly but I don’t think I’ll be a pilot as a career. I’d rather be a train driver where 99.9% of the time your wheels are planted firmly on the ground.
Never too late for anything in life. What is holding me to go for it is the financial means. I mean 100k is a lot. But other than that I don't discourage anybody who can go for it.
I am 15 and i already fly with a instructor in a Aeroprakt A32 in Danmark and i am not a pilot i just pay 50$ and get a flight tour where i can fly 98% of the time. I think that everyone who is 15 or older should be getting this experience!
Just remember that there is no substitute for youth!!!!!!!!!!!! It's part of life and we have to deal with it.This holds true in any decent profession.Loved your segment, thank you.
Hello Captain, not a video but still advise: join a glider-club! It sets a very good basis for your further career desires. You'll learn to fly, you'll learn what dedication is, you'll learn to get responsibility, you'll build a network etc. Then start saving: big time! Get a spare-time job in the supermarket or so. You won't be able to save up all you need, but with a good positive balance, you'll get a loan much faster. And last bit not least: keep that spirit and dedication!
I’m not sure what a minimum age is, but at least a pilot in training is recommended to go fly the 737-800 simulator at American Airlines. The program is called ATOPJets.com, Airline Training Orientation Program. You will spend a day learning systems, and the next day two hours in the simulator, the first observing other teams, or flying , and being a co-pilot one session, and pilot in the next session, or v.v. Each weekend this is offered, only 8 pilots are on the schedule; the course fills up about 7-8 months or more in advance, so it gives you time to save up ($495.00). Of course, you have to get there and stay in the Candlewood Suites, where most of the attendees stay. Wayne Phillips, who writes for Flight Training magazine, is the organizer and instructor, a former airline pilot, and a great enthusiastic teacher. This is a great line item on your flying resume for an airline interview, which may be a few years down the road. I’ve done both the 737-800 at AA and the Airbus 320 (at Jet Blue University) and it was just a great experience. Since I’m working on being a Flight Instructor, and already am an Advanced Ground and Instrument Ground Instructor, this experience gave me a professional flying perspective for my students. You can FLY! 😎
Teaching people is a gift - not everyone can teach. That's especially true in Aviation. Just because someone has x years in an Airline does not automatically mean they are suitable and qualified for any of the positions you've mentioned. The "Job for life" is no longer true except for a very small group of Pilots. These days as a Pilot you are just a commodity. I'm just starting year 34 in this Business. Working at my 6th company.
31?! Wow! Would you say that’s generally just the case in Europe? I’m from the U.S. so hopefully there’s some wiggle room with age haha! All the pilots I’ve worked with (I’m a flight attendant) told me I’m definitely not too old. I should have my commercial license by the time I’m 31 in April. And hopefully get hired by a small regional airline by the time I’m 33, latest! Those are my goals anyway 😬
You're not old at all. Being American i'd recommend learning spanish/french asap, it will open many doors for you given the proximity with LA and Canada. Cheers
Never too old I'm 34 and I'm starting my flight career now hope to be in the airline business by 35-36 American market for pilots is flourishing again, took a while after 9/11 to bounce back! Go for it
Are you interested in WW2 submarines as well as flying? It looks like a beautiful model in the background (as well as a beautiful pilot in the foreground!). I wish I did Instagram, I'd love to win that print. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work!
Hi dutchpilotgirl. Awesome video and information. I want to be a pilot and I thought that because of my age, it would be more difficult but you never have to give up.
Love your videos I am yet to graduate high school but I want to become an airline pilot you and Captain Joe inspired me to become a pilot hopefully I can get a job quickly I live in the U.S.
I don't have Instagram and don't really want it, I'm already over tasked with trying to keep up with comments. So, even though I like the picture, I'll have to let it go.
If I graduate with 25 years old, is it a perfect age to get an airline job? IDK why even after watching that video I feel old! but I love aviation I wanna do it anyways!!
Hey, I am young, passionate about becoming a pilot and good at both maths and physics, although I can't afford it. Can u have a video or at least answer my question on what to do or if I can become one?
Khalid Abdulghani if u cannot get in a cadet programme with one of the airlines then you'll have to work for it. Get a job save money and pay for your training that's the hard way
I'm just going by your name, I hope you don't mind, but if your academics are good and funds are short, see about the RSAF. You'll be able to fly both American *and* British aircraft and military flight training does a lot with a little time.
Ok... here we go... my first comment.. hmm. well, I started my pilot education at almost 30. Went through a hell with a divorce and ended up alone father with daughter during still being at flight school. Made it despite that everyone told me it was IMPOSSIBLE, to be alone with a 2 years old Little girl and doing ATPL and later CPL but... what the Dutchpilotgirl say...... its all about FOCUS and DIVOTION and to never give up (the last is what I say :)), and... to be a pilot "in the DNA".. I ended up with a Boeing 737 NG type rating the same year Europe and the rest of the World CRASHED in finance problems 2008. Went to a terrible line training for Royal Air Maroc 2009 that ended with no flying and due to they only want Maroc pilots... a Swedish pilot is not what they wanted.... a very long story extremly short... after staying in Morocco and created a entire new carrier, I came back to Sweden 5 years later and now, at the age of 46 I take back my CPL ME IR plus Type rating on B737 and I feel very positive that it is not impossible to end up with a pilot job.... The most important is the Health, a young and positive mind, and I even look 10 years younger (at least):) then what I am. And I made a Class 1 Medical with same demands as a 20 years old (I lost my Medical 6 years ago so I had to "do my Medical first time" again)... I have almost 20 more years to fly for a airline Company, if I get hired, and if I keep healthy, I may even maybe keep flying till long after 70. I Think that we will live longer in general and it would not surprice me if a airline pilot will be able to work till age of 67. So the question is.... will any airline Company see it as something positive, that a man (in my case) have worked with 4-5 other Carriers/areas before ending his working carrier in the Aviation business? Finance, IT, fitness, import/export and so on.... or do they mostly prefer someone who starts at the age of 20 and work 40 years in same business? That was what you said, but... And special question to you dear Dutchpilotgirl, how do I get my 17 years old daughter to be interested in becoming a pilot? :) Oh, sorry, that was two questions.... ;)
Henrik Zetterström Wauw what a story! I’m very impressed and I totally agree. The fact that you have gone through all that says so much about you and probably also a lot about your daughter. In order to become a pilot (for all people who do not get dragged into a company because of relatives) it takes a lot. A ‘normal life’ is very hard to get, unless you are lucky of course. After all, timing is everything! 2018 is a good time to start and people who graduate now have way less problems getting into the right seat than in the crisis. They will probably never understand what you (and me) are talking about. But in the end all of this, the risks, are so so worth it if you have a passion for flying and a ‘hectic’ life. Maybe sooner or later, your daughter will realize that becoming a pilot might be perfect for her. But if she does not then that is also fine right? As long as she is happy with what she is doing... I mean, if she wants to get children early, get a cat and all that... becoming a pilot is not the easiest way to achieve that! 😜😜 Thank you for sharing your story on my channel!
Thank you so much for your reply and.... your channel is actually the only channel I subscribe. (I have not even subscribed Captain Joe´s, even if I find his videos educational, so feel honoured 😊) I am happy you liked my story, and maybe one day, when I have finally a first officer job on Boeing 737 I will write a book about the full story how I got there, and you will get a copy :) Yes, passion for flying i have, from very Young age and I can say that two of the best feelings I know is to fly any airplane, not just Boeing 737 but also a DA42 or a “normal” PA 28 on a sunny and the second is..... when standing on top of a mountain at a ski resort, and you see the great surroundings and you feel the fresh air just before you take a deep breath and “fly” down the pist… I surely hope I get a first officer job on Boeing 737 this year…. I will get back my type rating on Boeing 737 soon, and hope they see my life experience I have outside the aviation business, as something positive. About my daughter, she wants to become a doctor and have a "normal Life" but maybe I can atleast have her take a PPL and fly PA 28 once in a while with her dad.... For another note, from another Video you did… about the Bose A20 headset……. I borrowed one from the flight school the last two days of flight exams, and WOW…… After I saw your video I was thinking….. “what is so amazing with that headset”….. but you are right…. (again 😊) it is really a great headset and the active noise reduction works perfectly. I wonder what APP is the best for IFR plates….. for us who not yet work at a aviation company, but who need it for our private IFR flights at flight club?. Maybe this could be a subject for another video. Thanks again Dutchpilotgirl 😊
I love your videos ☺ ! I wish you to reach millions of subscribers and same for Captain joe and mentour pilot ! I can't wait a video of you together with captain joe and mentour pilot, that's will be great to see all 3 in some videos . Greetings from Romania ☺👍
The U-boot behind you does remind me of this soundtrack: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tUy_zDY4e18.html When TMF and The Box where on dutch television, this song/soundtrack was played alot by the end of the 90's . Great memories are coming back ;-)
hey i started my flight training when is was 14 but have been flying since i was 12. i'm a Canadian pilot so i can't get my ppl till i'm 17 or hopefully this summer. do you think i have a good chance of getting a job
Hello Michelle how do You do ? Thank You very much for your video. And beside for me The Age is important for the Airlines Who carry Passengers from one point to another. However ; as You told in the video , it is not impossible to be an Airline Pilot at any age if You arte healthy. Beside I am the supporter of young ages rather than the middle age pilots. And I submitted to your Giveaway Entry. I wish Good Luck to every one.
