The annual Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds is more than just another race; it's a tradition that reaches back more than 60 years in Springfield, Illinois...and always alongside the Illinois State Fair, ongoing since 1853. Join me, the History Mystery Man, as I go on another State Fair adventure with USAC Silver Crown Series newcomers Trey Osborne and Briggs Danner, both making their Springfield Mile Dirt debuts. Plus, I'll mix in some of the veterans, including 7-time Silver Crown Series champion Kody Swanson and this year's race winner Justin Grant. I'll even take you into one of the most awesome state fairs in America...the incomparable Illinois State Fair. Enjoy the show...and thanks for your support!

Great video Don. My first race ever was watching the Buckeye 100 USAC midget race in the late 1960s. Ohio State Fairgrounds. Similar atmosphere. Can't believe how cool calm collected The Tall One always comes across. Low key in check emotions. Hope to meet him next month at Eldora 4 Crown. I'll be heading to the Soo Locks this Sunday. Staying at the Ojibway Hotel. Then heading up to Whitefish Bay and the Shipwreck Museum. Will camp 2 nights there. Never been. Bucket List for me Don.

I thought it was nice of the pole sitter (and eventual race winner) to take some time to converse with you while waiting on the track for the start of the race. It was nice to check in with Trey again. He seems like a nice, humble person. We also got to learn a little about someone new to us -- Briggs Danner. I like your infield speed shots. They give a much better feel of the speed of the cars than shots from the grandstands. I also liked the vintage cars you showed us. Thanks for again taking all of us to the races with you.

Really enjoyed this video, love the mile dirt tracks. Sad that only this track and DuQuoin remain (at least in terms of hosting auto races). Although I heard the name, I never knew much about Trey Osborne. I had no idea he was 6'8"! Having been in some cars that the cage was dangerously close to the top of my head (and I'm only 6' with shoes on) i do worry about him, although the Silver Crown car he's running does seem to have some clearance. Regardless he does seem like a great kid and quite a wheelman. Hope he can go far. Nice to hear from Kody Swanson and Justin Grant as well, 2 very talented drivers that are big names in USAC but get very little mainstream attention. Also do you what happened with Schrader? Seen n the results and you mentioned in the video he made the race through the consi, but he never started the race. He was replaced by another driver, Mario Clouser but even he is listed as "NT" which I think means he didn't start?
@HistoryMysteryMan
@HistoryMysteryMan Месяц назад
Thanks Gregg...the Illinois State Fair races are so much fun to cover...you've got so much to work with. I can see great futures for both Trey and Briggs. Schrader made the race by earning the last transfer spot in the B-Main. Then, after the cars rolled off for the main event, I was hustling down to the inside rail in turns 3 and 4 when I saw Schrader riding his little two-wheeler in street clothes. So...I have no idea why Schrader didn't start the race.
@greggrauscher34

No problem , thanks for info on Schrader. As far as I know the McQuinn team is relatively low budget, maybe they damaged an engine or had some other type of failure.

ah the mile dirt, too bad we havent indiana anymore, not like we have a ton of them to begin with, and it didn't have to go away they made it go away for parking and so they can train horses for the casino in shelbyvill, dont get me wrong I love horses and did 4 h when younger and love the contests but not at the cost of 2nd oldest track for racing in the usa, but I dont want to rant about that again I go off about it too much as it, still the fair going on remindes me of eldora at one of the big events on a larger scale, has soo many food trailers, its nice to see champ cars still do what they are made to do 100 on a dirt mile, just too bad soo few horsetracks are willing to or able to have the silvercrowns run a a race on them, but its a type of racing that harkens to the earliest openwheel coups and roadsters on the horse tracks back in 1903 when auto racing seems to have begun in the usa in earnest at indy and milwalki and nashvill though I read somewhere knoxvill held the first two car auto race in the usa even well before that.

@@HistoryMysteryMan yea I would however just be happy if they had a large dirt track in the indy area again, they got every other kind of track and racing, just a half mile just one big enough we can have silver crown racing on dirt in indy again or in the area, I ligit tried to ask doug bolls the presedent of ims if they would consider making the dirt track bigger but turns out it was mr johnny parsons at kokomo, had a photo taken with him the presedent of the brickyard used my camera to take a picture of me and mr parsons no joke, just happened to be in the right place at the right time in the front row, would be nice if could even get a temp half mile inside the limestoned mile like used to have, they will do stunts, monstertrucks, demo derby but not willing to have one day a year to have champ cars inside the track of champions, its not right man the racing capital of the world, it was for intents and purpose the 2nd contiunous oldest use auto racing track in the nation, only to milwalki though its said first auto race was at knoxvill iowa between two guys well before the miles in 1903 but it was a one off, soo much litteral history at the state fair track in indy, dont get me wrong I like horses I did 4 h and my cousin had some but not at the cost of what keeps indiana on the map , we arn't kentucky, honestly I would love a full 100 lap silver crown race at eldora I think I read on third turn .com though the most eldora has ever done for silver crown was 60 laps even with an independant outside the 4 crown nationals race, tried to ask tony at the rumble consider doing a 100 lap race outside of the 4 crowns, they got the world 100 after all, I would just be happy with one more dirt half mile race closer then terrehaute in indiana though, its how they are ment to run, of course though its the pavement drivers that are the ones that are the best silver crown drivers or have the perchent to pavment vs dirt like kody and bobby, tyler roarig, taylor ferns, dekota armstrong, kyle ogara and the usually good qualifying dereck bischak though I havenot seen him since the hoosier, I know he is still racing though in the 500 sprint car tour but haven't seen him in a pavement silver crown race, hes local to me or at least his birthplace is up by angola about 30 minutes from auburn, also we got the acd fest this weekend if you arn't buissy you should come more antique and sports cars then you can shake a stick at some are even old race cars that are up for auction just west of the city by the interstate
