In all fairness, there is no contradiction between having an appealing appearance and saying unpleasant or even hurtful things. Although I can agree, that someone who is "pretty on the inside" normally would try not to hurt anyone´s feelings, unless for a good reason. Keeping negative opinions about someone´s appearance to oneself, may be a basic step to avoid hurting someone´s feelings. Keeping to oneself, that is. Telling someone flattering lies is generally a bad idea. Chances are, that they will see through such lies, and get hurt both by the negative opinion and the dishonesty.
