The thing with this is its probably changed weeks after this was created. Other than the bf3 and ce boss pedals his pedal board is completely changed since lateralus came out.
the pedalboard in this video is from his 2019-2020 setup, as of now it has not changed, other than the Providence and Micro Flanger being in a separate loop in a rack unit
What a great array of pedals and the sounds you recreate are spot on. Embarrassingly I can't play an instrument but I know what I like to listen to and TOOL is one of those sounds. Thanks for sharing your skills.
I just found this video and it's fascinating and so well done. I've been searching for finding the Adam Jones tone and sounds and you unlocked so much of it.
Hi. Big fan of the video. I'm a newbie to electric guitar and pedals. I have watched it over a dozen times trying to work out how you are using the pedals, looper and the pedal order. The tone is spot on. I've got a DSL40C on the way. Thinking about just using a GigRig QMX2 for the 2 loopers (less pedalboard footprint).
Incredible rundown! Don't have nearly enough money to spend on a few let alone all of these, but it's wicked to see how the sound is formed! 😮 Thank you!! All i could think while watching is "damn, it would be fun to jam with all these to play with!"
If you want to do all this without spending a lot of money my advice would be a Zoom G1Xon multi-effects pedal. That is what I use and if you have a halfway decent amp you’re good. It has most of these effects built in plus amp models like the Diezel. Will it sound exactly like having all the pedals? No, but for $80 or so you can’t go wrong.
While diving into the rabbit hole of gear, try not to lose sight of the fact that ultimately gear doesn’t matter really, the only thing that makes Adam Jones who he is is his songwriting and composition. He would still sound like Adam Jones on a boss katana. Guitarists often get into this weird mind set of pursuing the road instead of the destination, which is a great song. Tone and everything else is secondary to writing good music.
As a little data, I can give u my experience: I use a dd3 like you, but the feedback knob its same as level (thats what I've seen on AJ pedalboard) along with a Phase 90 to get the tone on No Quarter. Its a weird combination but it worked. I have a BOSS BF3 and Boss Chorus Ensemble. The ensemble I used in some parts like Aeon Blue Apocalypse and the verse of Eulogy. The rest its like you explained: delays, flanger, wah, volume pedal and volumen knob on the guitar. Also: I dont have money to buy a Diezel, so I bought a Diezel preamp pedal and it gives me a little bit of Jones's Tone.
I find it very interesting that he hasn't adapted to a DD-20, DD-200, or a DD-500. Would make delay situations so much easier. I started out playing a lot of Tool with just one DD-8 and messing around with the time knob to get what I needed for each song. Got very annoying. Didn't wanna fill my board with more delays, so I went and got a DD-20, loved it, but as I've been learning more and more Tool, those 5 presets got zapped up, and I didn't have a slot anymore for anything non-Tool lol, so now I just use a DD-500 and call it a day. Can name presets so there isn't confusion, and it is just a breeze. Great stuff! Always wondered what all AJ was doing with his stuff, and you're the closest at being able to explain it without having a full rig rundown. Lol.
Hi, i’m trying to build my own Adam homes style pedal board, was just wonder how you came across the actual board as i can’t find them anywhere. Love this video btw hope you realise more tool content soon 🤘
I remember Adam started off with a marshall Plexi with one cabinet one DD and the EQ and that was it . Around the time TOOL did the Lollapalooza tour I can see how his pedal board evolved on the anima tour.
Excelente video!! Acabo de ver en otro video que el Providence lo usan Adam y Justin porque en una parte de Pneuma pasan de 115bmp a 117bmp y tienen memorizados los dos tiempos en el A/B Saludos✋
Hey man this is awesome work! Please update more videos! One question: how do you go from a clean to a distorted sound using only the volume knob? I can't figure out how this can work staying on the same channel. Thanks in advance!
Not sure exactly what gear you're using, may change things. But at least for me it's pretty straight forward. I'm using a guitar with a SD Pegasus pickup, pretty hot pickup, but not quite as hot as Adam usually runs. I have my tone knob at about 8 or 9, gain on the amp is between 4 and 6 depending on the song, then for cleaner sections I just dial the volume down to around a 5 and back up when I need distortion, check out some of Max Niessl's cover/tab videos, he has a display that shows his volume levels so you can dial in your tone using those :)
Very cool video! I a huge Adam Jones/TOOL fan, and I love your setup! I might have miss this info, but are all the delays/modulation/EQ in the FX loop of your Mesa?
Great video, my man! Very informative and spot on. When it comes to distortion, is there a certain pedal that you would recommend to get that Adam Jones sound, without breaking the bank? I've been looking at a Diezel VH4-2 and a Empress Effects Heavy.
What are you using for to hold the carbon copy and expression pedal? I havent been able to find something I like and I have a very similar board. Love the videos, Thanks!
Do you think you could do this with the BOSS gt1000 multi effects machine or the line 6 helix ? I want to get one of those and your setup has the most Adam like tones I’ve ever heard. I just went to their concert Monday and it’s shocking how much you sound like Adam. Really good work my friend !
Awesome video! I'm new to using EQ pedals. How do you get the feedback sound with the Flanger? I'm in an apartment, so it might be because I have the volume too low on my amp?
in my old videos i also used to live in an apartment haha, i use the eq, flanger and delay for the feedback. pinch harmonics also help with it since they ring out nicely
Ok, so I got the VH4 preamp per your suggestion on the other video. Could you clarify on the order of the signal chain? Is the carbon copy deluxe/expression pedal, providence, chorus, micro flanger all part of the FX chain as well following the eq, or are they separate? I've read that the eq goes back to the Wah, so I'm a little confused. Do you have the micro flanger going back to the Wah?
Hey I got the 535 wah but I'm not sure which version. I have everything you have on the rev 3 except the big knob on the side only has 4 clicks instead of 6. Do you know which version I have? The 4th position on the one I have sounds pretty close to your version.
for the pneuma and 7empest delay settings, are they the same as the regular DD-3 settings or not? and if not, how would you get that delay on the DD-3 pedal. that’s the only delay i have right now 😭 i guess i should invest in a carbon copy like you haha
How do the DOD eq’s differ? Aren’t those 2 the same model? They do seem to add quite a bit of hiss. Also, do you know which phaser (not flanger) Adam uses on the beginning of the song “Jerk Off” and the hidden track on the Opiate EP?
Hi, I've been watching your videos for some time and I can't get over how amazing it sounds! Could you tell me what I'm doing wrong because the sound I have is not even close to what you have. Pedals I use fx loop boss g7eq > crybaybe > flanger > dd3 > boss reverb. The amp is a dls 40c with a direct connected diesel v4 pedal
Psm 5 just disengages the pedals so it’s just his clean sound to the amp? Or just disengages pedals so it’s direct to his amp for his rhythm riff sounds ?
Are the settings that are actually visible on the MXR Carbon Copy for Pneuma or are they for 7empest / Descending? And what are the second set of settings (i.e., the settings not pictured)?
To get his wah tone, is a six position BB535 (Rev 3) necessary? I've already got a 535Q and all I'm seeing for sale are Rev 1's. I'm wondering if it's worth it to make a change to a Rev 1 or hold out for a Rev 2 or 3. BTW I spent about $700 on pedals this week after finding your channel. OOPS!
No its def not necessary. None of it is necessary to play the songs. I mean you need delay, modulation and a wah. But if you have plenty of gain in your setup you dont need a whole bunch of it. Adam still sounded like Adam thru the bf3 dd6 old standard fasel inductor crybaby eq and superbass/mesa dual rec. Most of the stuff you see is for live purposes.
Could I achieve this with a DD5? I know he uses that on Lateralus and one other track I can’t recall but would you know if I could just do the same settings as the DD3? Thank you sir!
Great video. Tone is very close to Adam Jones and you don't need 3 amps to achieve it 🤘. Regarding using the BF-3 instead of the BF-2. Could you share some information about the settings on the BF-3 to achieve a similar tone when using the BF-2? Since both sound very different with equal settings I was wondering if you could share your take on it. Thanks and keep up the good work!
I was also looking for that kind of information, and finally found it so here it is: same settings as the BF-2, but with rate just above 0 (in standard mode of course). I think it works, but I will be happy to hear if it works for you too !
@@pkdgsj Hi, thanks for the tip. I have tried the setting and it sounds pretty close to the BF-2. My personal issue with the BF-3 is, that is sounds always too "digital" for me, regardless what kind of setting I use. Therfore, i browsed a little bit around on Reverb and found myself a BF-2 (1990-2001) is a pretty good shape. Will try it as soon as it arives and decide which will remain on my board 🙂. You should also check out the latest live stream from Antonio if not already done. There is also a very good comparison between BF 2 and 3 and the setting is almost the same as yours.
One more question. Pedal order. Micro amp to Volume to whah to dd3 to flanger to eq in loop one the there loop is tuner to micro flang to chorus to delays ? Thanks
@antonioppk_6433 in the video I saw, he had it on top of the amp stack as a signal boost after all of the effects (unless he uses a different stack for the talkbox, but didn't mention that). This was a video of his actual rig on a stage before a show.
@AntonioPPK_663 Hey thanks heaps for this! Question: did you have anything active from the start to get that distortion and the overall guitar tone before you turned on the eq and the others? While you did go over what the pedals did and that was super appreciated, can you please tell me more about any pedals or effects you were using to get the tone from the start before you switched the eqs on, or is that tone just from your mesa boogie settings? Please and thank you! Also, I didn't see a plasma pedal? Your help has been super appreciated
@@antonioppk_6433 it’s a DODFX40-B which i believe is the same one AJ uses. This with the BB535 wah sounds amazing.. and I’m only playing though a Katana 50. How important is the MXR micro amp to a fellow Tool obsessed fan? Still searching for a LDR2 vol pedal. They are impossible to find
Jeez that quite a pedal board...ya know, ....i missed out( god i wanna cry) a local sale listing had a dude selling all these Boss pedals from japan, shit i never seen before, and i never seen in america!!!... I was broke at the time, dude even texted me "come on guy i only got a few left".. somehow he used E.S.P knowing i was licking my lips thitsty for some rare gear😢😢😢.... Well, you cant always get what you want.....but if ya try sometimes....nice chops man!!!.dont he use a banshee talk box?
@@antonioppk_6433 Awesome, I’ll give it a try with what pedals I have. Won’t be the exact tone for me but should get close enough. Just ordered a BF-2 to replace my BF-3 that I got last week 😂
@@antonioppk_6433 OK, and is the one on the right just to the tuners? I saw another dude with and AJ pedalboard and he had the psm on the right to volume pedal. So he could pull back on the volume pedal for a clean tone and then just hit the psm to quickly transition to dirty. I thought that was brilliant. Idk if AJ does that but I'm definitely stealing that idea.
@@antonioppk_6433 Yeah, same. I thought the 1st one went to his wah as well. That's weird, why doesn't he just get a regular tuner that mutes? I guess he's used to his setup. I really like that volume pedal idea tho. I have been using 2 amps, one for clean and other for dirt, but that psm into a volume pedal idea intrigues me. Thanks for the info dude!
Do you notice any change in sound of your wah when you engage the psm 5? For some reason with my it always gives a weird sound when I use it to engage my wah lol
@@antonioppk_6433 if I run my wah through the loop on the psm-5 it will muffle the sound something terrible. I also have my delays, and an overdrive on the loop with the wah being the first in loop. It’s an old pedal so I kinda chalk it up to that lol. Thanks for the reply man
@@antonioppk_6433 FYI switched it around, also I had my delays going into my effects loop, they are now in front of the amp like everything else. Seems to be working so far so thanks for the advice!
