These people were saying that the band was becoming “soft”, that they were straying from their identity as a band. This is something that effects many artists. Artists are like many of us who have faced challenges in our childhood, etc. Some challenges make people angry, rebellious, or critical about societal norms and rules. These people/fans were criticizing the band because “they” saw the band as weaker now that their music was shifting from the hardcore thrasher rock band to one that wasn’t as abrasive. They were accusing the band as “sucking up to the man” rather than what was really happening, which was that the band was evolving, growing, etc. “The man” in this comment is the ‘mainstream music’. Music that is more politically correct, if you will. Music that doesn’t ‘rage against the machine.’ So, this song is a big Fuck You to one such fan who crossed paths with Maynard one day. The song begins with Maynard describing how this fan was dressed and his overall appearance with his new tattoos, nipple rings etc. (this description is important because it lets you know that this “fan” is new to the hardcore thrashing rock genre. Maynard is saying that this fan is in fact the man as well (because he chose to purchase music of a certain type and debase other genres) and that he is a joke because he hasn’t yet figured out that “the man” is the combination of ALL our decisions as consumers. So, when this fan is bitching about how TOOL is going soft by sucking up to the man, he is saying that HE is just as much the man as anyone. Which is why, at the end he talks about the guy buying their records and sending more money. It’s just saying what an idiot this guy is because he hasn’t figured out the basic principles of how the music industry or even basic consumerism operates. Hope This Helps
