Your're very right about listening to music how you want to listen to it. There is no wrong way. To be honest, the fact that you do count sort of adds to your personality, given your musical background. As a musician myself, I count right along with you. And if Im being completely honest, I like YOUR style of reviewing as well as how entertaining and informative you are with your reviews, thats alot of why I enjoy what you do. Great work, David!

David, always appreciate the analysis for any song you do. I'm not a musician, just love the music so hearing everything about the counts and other aspects of the song writing and performance, I don't understand alot of it but do appreciate the analysis coming from your musical knowledge . That's why we follow and watch your content. Just keep doing your thing. Love it when I see you react to Tool. Love the breakdown you do with the song but I have to admit, I watch to see if this is going to be the Tool song that'll make you crack 😂. It's all love, man. Stay fabulous

I found your channel because I love the counting aspects and most reactions don't dive into that. I'm a huge fan of the band and love playing the songs but struggle to lock into some of the time signatures and meters. You have definitely helped a lamen like me understand and also find subdivisions and figure out multiple ways to count based on what feels right to me. It's fitting that many Tools songs are lyrically written vaguely and open to interpretation and it's awesome that even the instrumental aspects of certain songs can also be felt or interpreted differently depending on the listener. Thank man, appreciate the videos!

That's awesome Dodger, it does take a while but once you start to get the hang of it, you'll find it comes easier and easier. Just wait until you have to figure out the difference between 2/2 and 4/4 (and yes, there is a difference, I had to write a paper in my theory class in college about that).

You're absolutely right! Do it the way you do it and screw em if they don't like it! Besides which with a band like Tool, I would count if I could; the music deserves it, the band deserves it. I hear the tribal type influence on pretty much everything, along with a strong blues influence. 9.2 seems a very appropriate score, and your reaction(done your way) was excellent. Also, whether it's important or not, congratulations on being 100 members away from 20k at the time I viewed this reaction!👍🤘

The kinesthetic response is critical to musical appreciation: you have to move your body in some way in order to "enter" the music. The stereotype is toe-tapping. Dance is the most socially-accepted way. There are people who privately enjoy classical music by acting as the orchestra conductor as it plays. Maybe the most subtle way to move to the music is breathing to it. "Rhythm" is perhaps the most transcendental of the basic elements of music in that you don't need sound to experience it.

Wow, you had it fast! Because of the accents in the guitar I was so focused on 5:4 (which of course is 9) in the beginning and 2:2:2:3 later on (again 9 altogether), that I did not log into the underlying 3:3:3. Once you have figured it out though, you will not hear the structure anymore you were making out of it at first listen. Simple, but still genius- I am sure Igor Stravinsky would have been impressed!

The counting is a thing that many people do that do music. It's the same for a painter or even a grafics designer. The way you see the world and art changes and with that changes the way you enjoy things. Also Tools Music is notorious for the beat going different than you expected and the timing changing mid song and still sounding so great. It's very special music, with so many layers to enjoy.

Had a college friend - a music major - who echoed your sentiments on how he listens (though he had the advantage of the Internet only being for nerds then, so no one trashed him for it). He did say that sometimes he wished he could keep his technical thoughts from coming into his mind, but I liked learning to see the genius behind the compositions we would jam to together, just as you and a few other 'Tubers do (you're not the only one, and there are some who do just go on visceral feel so the haters can go watch them). Do it YOUR way and rock on! As 311 said, "F the naysayers 'cause they don't mean a thing."
