I would love for you to introduce a new band to the channel as well. "Jambi" both begins in and is primarily in 9/8 time, interspersed with sections of 6/4. The entire band's first change to 6/4 begins in the section immediately preceding the guitar solo and continues through the solo. [3] During the solo, Adam Jones uses a talk box effect;[4] Justin Chancellor plays in 6/4, but unlike the rest of the band, he subdivides the riff into a pulse of 4+2; Danny Carey accompanies in 6/4 with a 4 over 3 polyrhythm to link the bass's subdivisions with the rest of the band. As the solo ends and the song moves into the next section, the drums and bass shift back into 9/8 while the guitar remains in 6/4 to create a polymeter. Once the 9/8 vocals rejoin, the guitar shifts back into 9/8. The entire band then remains in 9/8 until moving back into 6/4 for the final two measures, which reuses the first two measures of the first 6/4 section. [3]

First this song is a freaking lesson in polyrhythm. The pulse actually doesn't change but they are constantly shifting the patterns. Many people think this song was inspired by Maynards son. This song is about what is REALLY valuable in life... not money, not fame, it is the connection we have to PEOPLE and the love we share. Shine on!

With regards to the lyrics, to me the key line is "wants and needs divide me, then I might as well be gone" So the song is about his, then, dying mother. In the beginning he is describing how he has reached the top of his career and all of his goals, but it doesn't matter in the Light of him losing his mom. The stories he then tells us, show how she helped him, pushed him, believed in him, and maybe even made it her goal, for him to reach his goal. So his want here, is to hang on to the past, give it all up and try to keep his mom if at all possible. He then realizes, that this is keeping him from actually being with her through the process of dying (his need). So he needs to step away from his wants, realize that his mom is going to die, accept this and be with her as she is now, not how he wishes her to be. " Shine down forever, shine down benevolent sun, shine down upon the broken, shine down as two become one" to me, this line indicates that he is stepping down from "the king's mountain view" and back to reality, letting time move on, and accepting the natural process of death. Jambi is the name of a geni from some old TV show, and underscores the theme of wishing that, to me at least, is intrinsically removed from reality. This becomes even more heartbreaking in light of Maynard's mom's story, since she became paralyzed when he was a young boy. One can imagine that, even though he obviously loves her, he must have always harbored a wish, to have her whole again and able to take care of him in a more physical sense than her beliefs and support, and having that lifelong wish replaced with the wish of just holding on to her for one more day is... Pretty deep artistic inspiration... Great song! I like to think that the use of space and a pretty chaotic soundscape around Maynard's clean and vulnerable vocal performance underscores a sense of loneliness and emotional turmoil, and the odd meter, polymeters and polyrhythms create a sense of uncertainty and being lost, that is just beautifully realized and supports the lyrics perfectly! You should do 10.000 days and wings for Marie next, to complete the beautiful little four song suite about the loss of Judith Marie.

Love Jambi! But you want a slap huh, go with Rosetta Stoned. Easily the weirdest and simultaneously amazing track I have ever heard... just be ready for fun! I got to see them perform it live in February! 👽 🌀 Editing to add: If you listen to Rosetta Stoned, it will really do you good to listen to Lipan conjuring and Lost keys before them. Just adds flavor to the palate you didn't know you needed.

It's about having his son Devo H Keenan. (Hint for another song as well) Sentimental favorite of mine. Took both my sons to their 1st rock show in 2007. TOOL of course. They were 8 and 10. Great memories every time I hear it.

I was always under the impression this song represented Maynard Lamenting that it was time for him to be a rock star and hit the road....where he had previously found the dark side he fell in love with...yet at the same time he was now a dad and enjoying that life as well....and he was caught out of rhythm......similar to the style of the song

i'm waiting for u to do 'eulogy' 'swamp song' and 'parabol/parabola'. i think u will dig them all- but i'm admittedly biased. can't miss. 🤘
