Tool Review: Victorinox Pioneer Alox - The Minimalist's Choice

Hey folks!
If you're a multitool lover like me then there is no doubt you have come across the Alox Victorinox models. This particular one is the Victorinox Pioneer.
This is what I consider an absolute minimum tool set on a multi tool. An awl, a bottle opener, can opener, two small flatheads and a knife... All good tools to have in your pocket. For such a slim design it really does punch above its weight in it's tool set and will always have pride of place in my rotation, BUT I can't avoid that longing feeling I get when I realize I miss the tweezers and toothpick... I miss quite a few things actually. So this tool sits in a special little space in my collection, for when I'm having those "minimalist" days.

I love Alox, especially the Pioneer. That reamer is very versatile indeed. I use it a lot for opening packages, and I think it's the best nail cleaner tool :) but I always find random uses for it.

If you miss the”extra” tools that the alox range is lacking just buy the swisscard classic that has them all and the Victorinox leather card wallet and you’re sorted...😎

What I also like about them: they are (or rather: were) available in so many nice colors! But I really hate the key rings on Swiss army knives, especially on 93 mm Alox...

I especially love the limited edition Red version of the Pioneer... But I think they're sold out everywhere!

The keyring is not hardened. So, if you don't like it on a specific knife, it is really easy to cut away the ring and polish the spot.

@@1zaj34 Yes, I have done it on at least 25 knives, maybe even more. It takes a bit more time to do it on newer Cellidor models where the key ring attachment is not on a thin spacer but on the back spring.

DO NOT use metal on your teeth, you may not see it, but you are actually damaging the enamel.

Of course, and most people know this. It wasn't a recommendation, just a possible function in a pinch if you were VERY delicate. It would be far easier to find a splinter of wood and shave it down to a toothpick, or fold a piece of paper into a fine point and use that. And I did mention I miss the toothpick from the other tools 😁 Thanks for watching! ✌️

@@toolstimetravel4948 I really like you're take on having a minimalist solution. :-) Nevertheless, you should consider pinning the comment from @skizoboy69. Someone might mistake your 'not-a-recommendation' with a recommendation and then it will be harmful. Damage to the enamel will not heal ever and however small it is, it might open a tiny crevice that will cause tooth decay in the long run. While enamel is the hardest material in the human body, it is way softer than metal (especially hardened and sharpened metal). So really, even in an emergency, do not use the reamer on your teeth.

Regarding the minimalist tool set: combined with a keychain Classic (mostly for the scissors) a Pioneer is enough for me most of the time. I mean, if this tool set was good enough for the Swiss Army itself for decades, then it's probably a pretty good model, right? :)

Would you believe me if I said I have a classic on my keychain? Haha I actually do! That just fixes that little voice in my head that wants scissors and tweezers ✌️

@@toolstimetravel4948 I just ordered a Jetsetter yesterday. I hardly ever use the nail file on the Classic, and the last thing I really need is ANOTHER blade :D so I think a small Phillips driver will be more useful. At the moment I have an Alox Classic on my kechain, nice and slim, but again, no toothpick or tweezers, so I will try the Cellidor Jetsetter now.

Hi , I got for Christmas a pioneer alox , the blade looks bent , is it normal on the pioneer? My old good hunter has a very straight thinner blade, thanks

Yeah normally the blades are slightly leaning off to one side to allow the other tools to close next to it. Thanks for watching.

Are you sure it's bent . When it is closed it sits at an angle by design. So if you're looking down at it it veers to the right . But since I can't see it , yours could be bent . If it is return or exchange it.

Have one, love it, but I see no need for the can opener which, in this present age, is practically obsolete. Would love for future generations of this model to include a proper Phillips screw driver.

The combi tool is actually a better can opener than the can opener, and a better bottle opener than the bottle opener. I'd love to see an alox knife with the Compact's front tools. Blade, combi tool and scissors.
