Thanks man. As a little treat, check out Hendrix ripping it up on the BBC in 1969. Peace. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sNkapt6r5m8.html
I think you're right on the mark about "who" is talking in this song-both the alcohol or hard drugs and the man taking them-warning the world what's coming from him. "Trust me." "I want what I want."
Hey man. I love your content. I checked your videos and didn’t see this Three Dog Night video that I’m certain you’ll enjoy. If you’ve already done it and it was taken down then I apologize. Either way I think you’ll dig this. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0CuNBengxaQ.html
I am just a worthless liar. I am just an imbecile. I will only complicate you. Trust in me and fall as well. I will find a center in you, I will chew it up and leave. Trust me. Trust me. Trust me. ...says every addiction ever.
Tool is calming to me in a weird way. I got my mother to appreciate Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" in that way years ago, after she asked me to explain why I closed my eyes while listening to music. I gave her a "rock & roll lesson" about riding along with the pulsing intensity of a song, with a melody floating over the top (like in "Sober"). She seemed to get it when I compared it to Duke Ellington (which I called "big band heavy metal"). Both Tool and Led Zeppelin get me nostalgic about that rare bonding moment with my mom.
I've been a lead head since the age of 7 . I'm 58 now . One day I had all of my love playing and my dad said whoever that is singing can sing, my grandmother loved the tune hot dog. They are gone now but I always smile thinking of those memories. I'm smiling now, thank you Deborah.
Definately into character. Just discovered Tool. They seem to me like a piece of art on many levels, like the whole performance. A lot like spoken word performances where everything is the art. Love Tool.
That’s not character, that’s experience. Alcoholism and Drug abuse first hand. This is horrific pain through addiction pure and simple. Nothing like facing your own suffering and coming to face Your Personal Demon.
It's character. To actually be able to sing with the power he does in this song is amazing considering his posture during this performance. He must be grounding completely thru his legs or something because there's no way he's getting the breath that a normal vocalist would need to sing this.
Vocal Teachers that have reacted to this same performance have said that the crouching posture actually would make singing more difficult and admired his performance and commitment to capturing the essence of what it is to fight for one's sobriety. So he is in Character. The lesson I get from this is that playing & singing music isn't enough, the greatest artists are fully committed to the emotion and feeling of what they are presenting.
A vocal coach reacted to this performance by wondering how he could even sing with his body hunched over like that. She couldn't argue with the singing, though.
*musician brain comment:* that form definitely makes singing harder, he's just both that good of a performer AND that committed of an artist *lizard brain comment:* homeboy looks like a cracked-out steve from blue's clues lol
Tool guitarist Adam Jones has stated in an interview that the song is about a friend of the band whose artistic expression only comes out when he is under the influence. Great analysis Jamal.
Yup I agree. Seen tool 3 times in 2009, 2017(+🍄👀), and 2019 (outdoor with a huge bright moon and ominous clouds). Just mind blowingly awesome show. Even if you don't like the music it's a cool show with lots of visuals
The weird movements are him playing the part of an addict- he's been sober for a long time. It's also a nod to the official video done in claymation, I think you'd love it.
i'm _terrified_ of tool's music videos. like, i need to be extremely high if i'm going to watch one of them because it's the only thing that makes me relax. especially if it's sober, stinkfist, or schism 😂
@@InfiniteBumblebee337 I cannot clap on one beat, which made church interesting growing up lol, and this dude is playing 4 different rhythms with his arms and legs at the same time!
@@angelamorrow8973 I've probably watched that video a dozen times and am amazed at how effortlessly Danny can play multiple rhythms, like a different rhythm for each appendage!
My feeling about Maynard is that even though you would think he would be far from it. He was very socially nervous and had to dig deep in a sort of different euphoria to escape that feeling and it worked. When many eyes watch there are those who also feel safer in another character. So many would be shocked to know who was shy and not shy in the entertainment business.
@@brandib8465 I remember hearing something of a curtain as well. I saw one of their early shows where he did a good chunk of the set facing the drum kit because of stage fright.
One of the other singers who had this strange haunting presence on stage was Jacques Brel, he also was torn into pieces before going on stage. But when he started to perform, he entered in a trance.
This album still slaps me in the face. By far my favorite album by them. I love the rest of the album but if it wasn't for this album I would of never listened to music the way I do now. Faith no more Primus the Toadies and other groups that were different
I love this so much, Jamel! ❤ I just discovered your channel as a pure Tool fan. Your reactions nearly bring me to tears - I love your love for music and I love your appreciation for the depth of Tool's music. I also just want to say that I NEED to buy your merch - "Be a Good Human" ? That's the motto I live by, my friend!
Bruh ,you should check out the Tool concert video, where a fan rushes the stage, and Maynard ,being a Bjj practioner, throws the fan down on the stage ,and then sits on his chest, all while singing and never misses a beat!!
Brilliant insight - I thought that he was talking about himself, but your explanation makes more sense. This is more of a primal scream than a performance.
On the lead singer: he's an Army vet, never served in combat, but he excelled during Basic and AIT school etc etc, so much so that the Dept of the US Army offered him a full ride scholarship to West Point, the most prestigious military school in the world, and because he wanted to do music so much, he told em "NEGATIVE", he turned their offer down....
When I first saw the official video for this song I was blown away, but never thought they'd be able to play it live and sound good. But here they are. Great performance.
I just found you, I'm a 43 yr old white lady, but you opened my eyes 👀 to this song, I'm 10 yrs clean, and I never thought 💭💭 anyone would get this, the way it touched me,Thank y'all very much
One of my favorite bands of all time. Arguably one of the most artistic, creative, and poetic song writers. I appreciate you guys appreciating this band. Keep on keepin' on. 🙌
Nice! You should see them live..holy crap! The song "H" stands out and when I saw them live back then, I was like how in the hell did he hold that note so long. An awesome and unique band that Performs.
I was just thinking about H live recently. The one time that really sticks with me is from the tour with the giant video screens (2000 or 2001 maybe?). The lead-in to H was this seemingly endless loop of the same image over that record needle in the groove sound. It so gradually transitioned into H that by the time it got to "I DON'T MIND" the whole arena was fully spellbound and howling right along with Maynard. Like I know everyone jumps in on that lyric but it was otherworldly that time. Sometimes the code just gets cracked and the whole place is hypnotized. Tool is very good at that.
you hit the nail on the head with your interpretation of the lyrics. it really does sound like that part is in the POV of the drugs, not the user. the drugs are telling him exactly what they're going to do to him, how they're going to destroy him, and he can't escape it.
The reason he is hunched is because he is kind of moving like the little clay dude in the music video. Watch it and you will see. Another reason is because Maynard is very weird and has really bad stage anxiety so I think he does outlandish stuff to offset it.
I saw Tool at Lollapalooza and they were amazing, Maynard James Keenan was painted half black and half red and even though it was an outdoor show he lurked in the shadow's somehow just to detract from himself so you would experience the music more intensely.
As a artist looking at this show always give me goosebumps and make me so emotional, he is so far back into the moment he felt that way and then he wrote these words. As a artist we can go back to them moments in life to are dark and let them resurge again to use on stage. Its powerful and beautiful.
Just to clarify, Maynard is a performance artist. He can sing in ANY position. He uses his body to convey a story in this performance while his voice provides the narrative. In later years, he withdrew from the front of the stage because Maynard believes that the music should be the focus, and not any one member of the band. Here, he was a "front man". He later rejected that role and withdrew, making the music the focus,....which it always was to them in the first place. Love you guys. Love your videos.
My first time hearing them it was this song I was 11 and I am now 40. When to school the next day sing this song everyone thought I was nuts but lil did they know I was listening to the greatest band to ever come out of The end of the century.
When you hunch over like that, it condenses and therefore strengthens your core....your abdomen muscles....where your vocals originate. It's a method used to belt out those resonating sounds, that only the elite vocalists can produce with such feeling and accuracy.
The first time I saw tool it was on the side stage a the 92' Lolapalooza in Orlando , Florida . Most intense music I had heard in a while...and Ministry was on the main bill !
wow your friend on the right is a beautiful man. this singer is giving us performance like a monster in a play while also delivering amazing lyrics. love your channel.
I listen to pretty much any genre of music, grunge, rap, metal, country, oldies (1950 and 1960's), stuff I wouldn't even know how to categorize... And even with all that. Maynard shines. He's special.
Not sure if anyone has answered the Maynard hunched over question but I've heard he suffers from severe stage fright. He now stands at the back of the stage mostly in outline at the concerts. Adam and Justin are towards the front framing center stage with Danny and Maynard in the back. He comes up front from time to time but mostly in the back. The one song I remember him being front and center for was "Rosetta Stoned" during the beginning of the song when he is talking through a megaphone into the mic. Thank you for keeping your reactions real and being positive influence in this world Jamal as well and the big little brothers!
That’s exactly it , as if he is the drugs . I think his movements were a combo of withdrawals/ hunching and the drug. If you haven’t watched the official video for this you should !!
