A quick video on adding a tool tray/tool well/tool trough to the Windsor Design Harbor Freight Wood Workbench. I try to post videos on woodworking, harbor freight tools, and stuff that people may find useful and others have not posted on previously.

I have this same bench and love it even though it’s far from solid. Still, there’s something about it that makes me want to reinforce it and modify and improve it. Thank you for this video. I appreciate your devotion to this bench.

The work bench that harbor freight has only 3 drawers now amazon has that exact same work bench with the four drawers for just over 300

I got my 3 door one with a cupon about 10 months ago from Harbor Freight, it cost me $130. It leaves a lot to be desired but it's certyainly serviceable and at that price, it's hard to pass up, even as a temporary bench.

You could just drill holes along the back side of your tool box so you could stick a long bit through to reach the screws maybe?

Good idea. Unfortunately I didn’t think about that, but it was a good excuse to get another drill attachment.

Yeah I know. But that’s half the fun figuring it out. The tool well is great the video is you won’t make the same mistakes as me. One other thing is the thing collects a lot of sawdust. Not sure what to do about it. Maybe a hole to let it fall out but then small things would fall out too.

What kind of wood did you use for this? You mentioned the sizes but not species, I'd presume hardwood would be a good choice here for extra strength. I'm actually thinking about replacing the lower partical board shelf with a piece of birch plywood the same size for extra strength there as well. One person also added a 2x6 brace between the legs under the shelf.

nut and bolt would be better than screws to attach the well to the bench...drill holes, slot the bolts and tighten with a pair of wrenches...great video thanks!

Great idea. The HF bench has weak top so it may not be strong enough depending on where you place the bolts.

I have the same bench and am going to try to follow this build. It needs a tool well! Also, the more I use the bench for woodworking the wigglier it gets. I am thinking about trying to reinforce the legs and top somehow. Have you done this?

Try tightening all the screws. They get loose with time. This helped me.

Is this workbench pretty stable when hand planing? Can you add additional vises to the front side? And I wasn’t sure if you could use hold fast clamps the dog holes on top.

Stability for planing is fair. You can see a video I have for making a front facing clamp for this bench. Hold fasts won’t work the bench top is to thin.

@@asyangmdphd Thanks, I’ll check out your other video. Was wondering about putting locking caster wheels on this bench and if it will affect its stability as well?

@@kle2217 the casters don’t affect the stability when raised. I have a video on that as well.

Not really good for planing, but it can be done. You can also modify it to make it more stable/heavy. It works well enough for other task like cutting, finishing, joining, chiseling, etc, and you can plane small pieces of soft wood. It's basically a "get you by for now" bench that's capable of doing many things, even if it's not particularly done well, but it's so cheap you don't really mind either. Found mine on sell with a coupon for $130.

Do you think a French cleat system would allow the tool tray to be removable? How do other workbenches allow removable tool trays?

Hi Brent French cleats would probably work fine but may get knocked off depending on how you used them. Not sure about other systems but you could make smaller boxes or trays that would fit into my tool well. Why do you want it to be removable?
