Oh regarding festool, I purchased the vac and sander a few years ago because I decorate a lot at home, and sometimes for others. The ability to quickly and easily sand without dust is such a game changer, the amount of time, effort and clean up it has saved me, has easily paid back the £700ish outlay for the pair. 3 year warranty is really good too. I haven't bought into their drills etc as I'm very happy with Makita price/quality on all of those
I'm basically all Festool now, with Milwaukee for OPT and the few unavailable Festool tools. I've recently purchased the C18 to replace my 2008 vintage C12 (same machine, but from the 12V NiMH battery days), not because the C12 needed replaced, but because the batteries, while still available from Festool, now cost in excess of £120. The 12V batteries are still going strong...but I worry about how long for after 15 years. The C18 cost £185 as the HPC4.0 set, so cheaper than a couple of spare non-standard batteries. Cost-wise, All of my Festool corded and battery purchases from 2007 onwards are fully functional, with zero failures. All of my batteries and chargers similarly going strong with zero failures, despite being stored in an outside shed year round. In contrast, I've had several Milwaukee battery and charger failures. My old 12V NiMH batteries still charge on my newer 18V chargers and can actually be fitted to my 18V track saw and drills if I needed to keep on and was waiting for an 18V battery that wasn't quite charged. When comparing Milwaukee prices against Festool prices, it's always useful to include the price of a suitable Packout case plus shadow foam insert. Suddenly the discrepancy in price is negligible as the Festool price includes Systainer and inlay. 'Festool fanboy'? I'm looking at my Festool 'Work app.' with all of my Festool purchases, serial numbers, purchase dates and 'spares/accessories' tabs for all of them since 2006. Dewalt, Makita and Fein battery tools all came and went as a change of battery chemistry also meant that my year old tool was now obsolete and unsupported. Fine if your basic tool set is basically disposable after a job or a year or so of site use, not so great for quality workshop tools. As for price hikes, well, try the Domino alternatives out for cost rises over the same time period. Inflation + Brexshit is a bitch.
Regarding the bandsaw blade change. My axminster saw has a similar silly design with the fence rail blocking the slot. Because the fence rail is bolted on both sides of the table I simply cut the rail in half, taking just enough material out to let me slide the blade in. Looks like you could do the same. Changing blades is still a pain (bandsaws always are) but it's a lot easier than it was. Fence still works perfectly BTW.
Thank you Keith in your calling out the ridiculous prices of Festool products. A Kapex miter saw, a crude tool woodworking wise, retails for over 1700$ in the US. I don't understand how that planer bed rocks so much - if its not a design flaw and the replacement machine doesn't have it, I would love to see what was wrong with yours. Please make a closeup video of the mechanism under the table before you send it back to compare against the new one.
I'm in the US so we see different brands with various combinations of features, sometimes they match up with yours and sometimes not. However, it still helps to hear you talk about your reasoning for liking/disliking tools. For a weekend warrior like myself, I want to spend money on materials, not tools, so getting the most bang for the buck is essential. Thanks for the insights!
The only Festool "tool" I bought was their CT-15 dust extractor, which I then "upgraded" into something closer to a CTM-MIDI (by buying MIDI replacement parts which I knew would fit the CT-15 - although Festool themselves don't tell you that) for less than half the price of an actual MIDI. I also add zippers to their "disposable" bags so I can reuse them (you can get 5 to 10 uses out of each, easily).
Very well put together video Keith and it’s really refreshing to hear an un-bias opinion on these tools even when you’d possibly have motive to do otherwise with brand deals etc, so hats off to you sir 👍 also with the festool pricing I’m 100% with you, tools and tradesmen nowa days are becoming quite flash with tools and vans, (myself included) because it’s nice to have nice things and good kit but unfortunately the big boy brands festool, Milwaukee etc and even Ford with vans are well aware of this and unfortunately prices are always on the rise for the end user

@@RagnBoneBrown regarding those planers, i sell machines on regular basics and had 10 or so planer thicknesser models which all are almost the same. Even those models with separate hinges for infeed and outfeed table are basically the same and they all had this problem with lifting of thicknesser table when planing boards. I wanted to keep one for myself but decided id keep Dewalt DW1150 as it is best made along with elektra beckum HC260
Scott + Sargeant are a really friendly company to deal with. I live close(ish) to them and have been shown around their showroom. Friendly knowledgeable staff 👍🏻. Interesting take on the Domino. Festool tools are pro grade, as a company they keep spares for ten years after a machine becomes obsolete and when bought new, come with included three year insurance and on site warranty. Are they expensive yes. Is machine a game changer, yes. Therefore should Festool be able to keep producing under patient I believe yes. The thing is accurate quick and very reliable. If you put time and money into R&D produce a game changer you should be rewarded for the investment. Many brands are all about saving pennies yellow and black, red and even blue. A lot of kit is made disposable and in China not Germany
I have the Axminster Planer/Thicknesser AW2260S which I believe is roughly equivalent to your iTech. I've been very happy with this, no thicknesser table wobble and the chip collection works pretty reasonably with Axminster's AW82e 1.1KW extractor. Worked straight out the box with very little setup required, other than tighten the drive belt.
So you would not buy a domino again on principle. If I only used mine once every two years I would probably agree. However as it saves you a great deal of time over standard mortise and tenon joinery and remembering the principal that time = money how much time would you need to save to overcome your principles? Yes Festool are expensive, they may be over priced but they will make you more efficient and thereby increase your productivity and income
Well said -there seems be a lot of comments about dominos -it’s all about value I use mine everyday and makes work faster and repeatable -I’m professional if your a you tube clip maker then it won’t have the same value It’s a daft argument-why don’t you tube woodworkers make anything?
I also want to add, while you can 100% make perfect fitting m/t joints even by hand, the Domino is able to cut these joints with a repeatable accuracy. And yes, a Domino makes a mediocre woodworker, like myself, look better. But it depends on what stuff you are building. If you make nice boxes 95% of the time, the Domino isn't a tool that you need for your work.
I hope your new planer will be good. I suffered a lot with planer/thicknesser but finally settled on Felder AD741, I couldn't be happier after 3 years of using that machine.

As someone who purchased the lumberjack table saw after your review. You did dodge a bullet. I had it for 6 months and ended up returning it and replacing it with the itech, which is a world away from the lumberjack for not a great deal more money. The lumber jack blade wouldn't stay true to the mitre slot. The fence has far too much flex my adjustment screws to set 90 and 45 where seezed and I could not ajust. It really gave me nightmares. Reviews are few and far between, but I can honestly say that with 6 months of use, I would not recommend it. On the positive side for lumberjack, their customer service was really good, and they did try to help me through the issues before offering a refund
On another note, I have the itech thickness plainer as well, and I do not have anything like the movement you have on the lower bed. After seeing your video, I went and checked. To make sure I wasn't going mad. I have nearly 0 snipe. I'm glad Scott and Sergeant are replacing as I think you won't be able to believe the difference. Look forward to an update video on this
Interesting, I had no such issues with my lumberjack saw, it was excellent. I guess it comes down to a lack of quality control which is perhaps understandable / forgiveable at such a reasonable price point, so maybe I just got lucky! I stand by my comments though, I'd have happily kept it if it weren't for that electrical problem. Yeah Scott & Sergeant I've been really impressed by their service
I bought the ts1800 around 2 years back. I had real issues with the 13a fuses continually blowing. After I fitted a 16a plug, that problem disappeared there and then. Maybe I've been lucky,my ts1800 saw cuts brilliantly. Cast iron top is flat,ample power,very simple blade change, and adjustment. I don't regret buying mine.
@RagnBoneBrown Yeah, I did wonder whether I was just un lucky. Your review seemed to be very in-depth, which is why it's the one I went for. It's such a shame. Hopefully this was a 1 off as I seemed to really get a lemon. The minute I sent all my problems to lumberjack they offered a replacement or refund. Which I could not fault.

If you use Festool tools professionally (as I do) they're worth every penny and the cost is negligible, especially as the warranty is good. Funnily enough I've only sold two tools and one was my DF500 as I hardly used it. Got most of my money back.
I have the heavier duty Domino which is the 700. Purchased 2018. Great tool but insanely expensive here in Aus. It was around $2700. It is currently at the repair shop but out of warranty. The motor seems to be running slow and has no torque. However they have no idea why. It's a great tool but way over priced. I have the Kapex and it's also a great tool and as a joiner I would not use anything else. It's deadly accurate and worth the money spent. I have the Festool dust collector with it and again it's so powerful and well designed. I also have the latest Festool track saw and it's always a pleasure to use. If you are making quality joinery and it's not a hobby then I feel they are worth the money. Except maybe the Domino.
Completely agree on the bandsaw. I also have a Charnwood, a similar but bigger model, but blade changes are a complete PITA and take about an hour to get it set up for different sizes. The door electric interlocks rapidly fill up with dust and get clogged up requiring dismantling. The plastic rack and pinion vertical arm adjustment stripped shortly after the warranty expired. I have now taken out the interlocks and got rid of the rack and pinion and just use a big bolt. It cuts well enough but would I buy it again - absolutely not.
My jointer/planer has the same rocking movement of that table. It's still under warranty. I might send them a video too. I'm not hoping for a remplacement, but we'll see! Thanks!
Other than my Mafell saws/routers and Bosch flexiclick drill, I regret every other purchase😂 Bandsaw and Planer Thicknesser in particular. I have the same PT as you. That issue isn't right mate. Mine is solid. My gripe is not with the machine but with not buying a 300mm bed machine. As for the bandsaw - all charnwood bandsaws are Shi...rubbish!

Very interesting video. I´m always bit nervous when upgrading tools. When you have owned tool for long time you learn its short comings and strengths. And when upgrading I cant help worrying if new machine is worse in some way. For example I have finally decided to upgrade my table saw (Dewalt 745 which I actually bought because your videos yeas ago). My new saw will be brand new Hammer K2M. Model is so new that deliveries stat September of this year. Hammer has good reputation and new saw is full cabinet style castiron saw (145 kg) so it should be big upgrade. Still makes me bit anxious :D
That's not good customer service (well, it is) - you have every right under the Consumer Goods Act to claim a full replacement or refund on the thicknesser as it is clearly not fit for purpose, especially as you've a) had is less than 12 months and b) it's a 'big ticket' item - you have every right to expect it to work properly.
The fine filter on the dust extractor might be the wrong version? It comes in two part numbers (62605 and 62606) for the two different sizes of dust extractor they sell. I recently purchased the same 2HP unit with the fine filter and the fit is flawless. It's possible they've updated the design, but I think it's more likely that they sent you the wrong combo. Purely by accident I bought the same 2HP unit and the same axminster cyclone, having not watched your previous video about it. Great minds!

(BTW random fact - Numatic are not far from Axminster; based in Chard 7 miles away... I think they do all their manufacturing in the UK, even moulding the plastic and winding the motors?)
Hopefully you either got your sticky foam back out before you shipped it (to use it on the new one if possible) or passed on the dust collection 'issues' as well so they can see that too when they get the old unit back.
I have the bandsaw you would consider as a replacement for the charnwood and it's a good choice - actually just checked I have its predecessor but the point remains the same. You make an interesting point about the Domino and Festool which I don't feel is entirely fair. Its price has risen sharply compared to when I bought my DF500 4 years ago - but all tools have, and I don't think Festool are the worst. You make that point regarding the bandsaw and table saw choices you've made compared to prices now. A ridiculous situation generally post-pandemic. As for them being an overpriced brand, sure, if you're not a professional, then, Bosch and Milwaukee do represent good or better value. I still hold that the Makita SP6000 corded plunge saw represents a no-brainer better value buy than a TS55. But, for the price, you get an unrivalled warrantee experience (which is with the tool, not the owner), theft insurance, repairs and maintenance way beyond the warrantee period and, in the case of my top festool picks (mitre-saw, 2 dust extractors and 150mm sander) exceptional dust collection. Anyway, still plodding-on with my Metabo P/T I can't commit to any upgrade just now. Great vid tho. K.
I have use of that exact same iTech from Scott and Sargent. The extraction is rubbish as you say, although our extractor is underpowered. And yes, the table tilt is very annoying. Ours has done it from day one, but we don't usually do fine work on ours so not been as much of an issue. So will wait with interest to see if the replacement machine does the same. If it does, then we'll be in contact with S&S. The iTech is very similar to the model sold by Axminster so interesting to see if that has the same issue.

Firstly, how do you get anything done without coffee 🤯 secondly, I bought a record power twin camvac extractor for £4-500 because it had acoustic tubes which made it quieter and, not those useless cartridge filters. I read nothing but bad things about basically all of the cartridges filters whic put me off. I've been really happy with the Camvac 👍🏻
As a Canadian we see very little of European style tools and the prices are probably double. When I first equipped my shop it made more sense to buy two separate tools for less money. I do like the design of many euro tools such as the band saws which has slowly creeped into North American design. I couldn’t imagine using a tablesaw without a dado capability and now that I’m retired I wouldn’t buy a small power tool like a Festool at a price 500$ more than my 3 hp Jet tablesaw with a unifence. Good video on bandsaws the Axminster aw2606b is very good for the price it’s got plenty of power and good cutting height at 200mm it’s the one I use it’s 630pound at the moment and normally 850pound I think it would be better off even though it’s Axminster lower line of tools it work extremely well and the bearing guide adjustments are quite easy compared to other bandsaws I’ve used. I personally think it would be better for you than the slightly bigger one your on about from Axminster and a lot cheaper
I work in a joinery workshop and our panel saw has ridiculously poor extraction, so no matter the size of the model it seems they all have a common problem
Space is at a premium in my shop as well. Ideally I'd like a second bandsaw for same reason you would. I've been looking at the Rikon 10" bandsaw as a possibility for a second saw. Lost Art Press has spoken quite positively about the 10" bandsaw. If I had to do it all over again, for what I do, I would have started with it to see if it was enough for my needs.
Did you check the inrush current on the lumberjack against the type of breaker you have? If the inrush current is too high for your breaker it’ll trip it but that’s not necessarily the fault of the machine.
Hi the table beds should not move period , as for snipe that's to be expected from most machines , as for feeding multiple pieces in for thicknessing a sectional feed roller machine should be used not a single feed roller if memory serves me right

I have been fortunate in the past to have a well paying job /s, to be able to buy the tools I needed. I'm now retired and spend all day, every day in my 'Shed'. My shed is also very large, so can accommodate lots of tool space. evry one of my tools I use frequently and would not be without. Two Bandsaw, for re-saw and curves, ( being lazy). I use the Domino a lot, and again would not be without it. I would buy a cheaper brand if available, and agree it is over priced. No need to by other Festool, as other brands are a match for quality at half the price. My advice would be.. Buy the best you can with the money you have. Large will do little but little cannot do large ( Quote from Paul Sellers). Thanks for your thoughts.
Ive a very small shop. And went for wall mounted sip dust extractor with canister filter. That has been disappointing. The bolt holes on the extractor and cannister don't all line up. My screwfix shop vac has a sronger vacuum. It works , it connects to most things in my shop. On paper its the best compromise, in reality underwhelming. On the other side i have a small joineter/ planer from lumberjack, cannot fault it at all, no snipe , gutsy motor, also have the 14inch lumberjack bandsaw. Powerful motor. It resawed red oak sleepers that had aged, and were hard as hell 12x10 inch. It dealt with them perfectly. Was able to used the boards to make my sop door . Only thing with it is the micro switches on the upper and lower doors now and again play up. Id love to bypass them completely. And now and again have to reset fence and table.
It's high velocity low pressure. It's designed for extracting from large machines, so it's not really about suction. Vacuum is low velocity high pressure for small machines with small ports
Yes I understand that, it's why I chose that one........but had another tinker with it today. On the phlange that the pipe/ tube fits, sip have rather helpfully placed a screw. It's not big only protrudes a few mm . Then the sip pipe that I can buy locally , is a hardish black plastic thing. There's not alot of give in it. Hence when on the phlange , that wee screw is keeping it from sealing. Junk the tube, replaced with a softer clear one, from charnwood, and that seals , despite said screw. It's now shifting dust and shavings way better. All from a badly placed screw. Was going to remove it. But its got to be serving a purpose, but where its placed seems very odd.
Festool prices could probably be stabilised somewhat if they stopped focussing on paying social media 'influencers', which unfortunately seems to be part of their 'brand strategy' as they break into more of the mainstream in the UK and USA. I have a MIDI and an RTS 400 (corded), which are a great pairing - certainly not the first person to make this statement ;) I would say that the 3 year warranty isn't exactly astounding (DeWalt and others offer the same length).
Interesting video and great perspective. About the only disagreement would be Festool. These are professional tools that live up to the daily abuse, work perfectly and are backed by a company that will provide warranty or repairs for a long time. The cost, as a professional, is negligible. Are they overpriced? Probably, but not egregiously so.
Very interesting vid Keith. A uneducated conclusion i have reached is that big ticket machines like your dust extraction that doesnt seal properly. Is that they all must be made in the same factory in China. The defect will never be fixed as a result of that. Its good to see you review your choices as we have all been there with tools in general. Myself i bought a Makita table saw based on watching what you do with wood. The reality was that my workshop was too small to incorporate into and if i wanted to use it, i had to wheel it outside to use and it was very noisy. It just wasn't practical to have. Amazingly i got more than i paid for it on ebay. I had a simular experience with a router, but that was lack of talent on my part. And again i got more for it than i paid for it. On a positive note and i have said this before your channel does inspire me and my wood working skills are better as a result of that.

Don't buy the Charnwood planer thicknesser. It has the exact same problems that you described and I hated it. Was sooo happy to sell it. I bought a jointer machine from Bernardo and I have access to a Felder planer thicknesser at a local workshop. Night and day difference.
No planer bed should move EVER !! Your supplier is talking bxxxxxxs but if they sort you out then your OK, but there initial answer would spoil it for me and I would look to move on 😮
With the bandsaw fence rail being aluminum, why not just cut a slot in it for the blade to go through? Then adjust the two smaller fence rails to be accurate. Even a 1mm gap directly in front of the blade shouldn't impact anything as the fence won't ever be there.
After what I thought was loads of online "research" I UNFORTUNATLY settled of the: LAGUNA FUSION1 "Hybrid" table saw. USD $1799..... 2 and half years ago! It's been test started twice to verify squareness. Over 30 very frustrating of setup. It's cast top has over .034 non flatness. The stamped extensions will not come even close to flat. Fence is a joke. And so it sits there, just taking up space and making my blood boil. Laguna could not care less.
Curious, I'm surprised Saw Stop wasn't on your list of table saws... I honestly don't own one but I would definitely pick one up if I needed one. I know everyone seems to have one, but I hear they are very well built and the first time it saves your fingers means it just paid for itself.
Patents help protect the investment individuals and companies make on something new. There was nothing even close to the Domino when Festool created it. They deserve the protection before the cheap knock-offs come rolling in. I feel bad for companies like Woodpeckers who have all their best work ripped off and then sold for cheap on Amazon.
Hi Keith, not 100% sure about this without going back into some of your videos but, if Scott & Sargeant replaced your machine which they probably have by now, didn't you say that you bought the spiral cutters for that machine? if you did i hope you took them off before they took the machine. I have the updated axminster saw and my only real issue is that the fence lifts in the back when I fold the lever down to tighten it... I might be able to adjust something, and it doesn't really affect the cut since it'll lock down nice and square to the blade (and ends up flat to the table after the initial lift). But I don't think a £2000 saw should do that.
So glad you called out festool! Seems like on some forums and other maker's videos it is like a cult of festool. I completely agree, great tools but hideously overpriced.
Please stop saying that filter quality makes an extractor M Class. An M Class extractor is the same as an L Class extractor **but with an alarm when the vacuum bag is full** so that you are forced to change the bag to maintain the filtering/dust removal from the exhaust air. This is a mandatory feature for use on-site in the UK and vacuum manufacturers charge the earth for M Class because they know tradespeople are forced to use them. There is NO difference between L and M with regards to filtering or exhaust dust levels; just the alarm feature.
The patent expiration has been brought up a bunch for the DF 500. Recently, someone dug up patents on the DF 700 and, at least in the US, something in that patent isn't going to expire until 2032. I wonder if there's something that will be applied to the DF 500?
By growing your skills in the last couple years of course your a better judge on materials and tools! But ehm I would rethink your skirt/short.......🙋🏼♀️🌷🇱🇺
Can someone who really knows please tell me…. Is the Domino really so much better than a standard Biscuit joiner??? Is it worth the extra money and does it do a better job overall? I am on the festool platform for sanding, dust extraction, drill, driver and jigsaw but I use a standard cheapish Dewalt biscuit joiner and I want to know if the Domino is actually worth it or if it’s more of a ‘flex’ to own one rather than because it’s such a massive improvement on the biscuit joints?
Nice video Keith what a result on the plainer thicknesser. Ive had issues with my lumberjack not the version you looked at it's little brother and must say had mixed customer service from them even though it was under warranty (story for another day) i have just upgraded my table saw to the Rutlands model and its the business so far granted job site but can't afford the big cabinet saw but its solid. The domino ive looked at for while and the 500 and 750 xl on fb market place ive seen between 350-900. In your opinion would it be better to wait for newer versions of it or get second hand one?👍🏴🤷
I have the same itech machine and have the same issue with movement in the bed that you do I'm afraid. My machine is a few years old now but it did it from day one and I have the same snip and motor bog down issue as you. Fingers crossed your new one doesn't do it but I would not hold your breath.

4:16 in, there wouldn’t have been a problem with the saw, it’s be your electrical consumer unit, you need to swap the type b circuit breaker for a type c. It allows for a larger in rush current and gives a longer trip time while the current balances
