I love this promo. The way it's made, the narrator, the music. It's just like the old Toonami promos from the early 00s, plus some added adult language now. They did a great job on this!
I remember when I first learned about DBZ the first thing I watched was Kai on Nicktoons and CW, then I watched GT on Nicktoons but when it was over I was sad. Then one day younger me was flipping through channels and I saw DBZ Kai was on toonami and I was so happy. those were the days
They should have done this in the first place. Started it on Toonami so the kiddies on that nostalgia train see how DBZ was meant to be, and stop bashing it. The next step should've been Nicktoons and Toonzai and all that...
Danny D's World That's what I figured. Kai was aimed at the hardcore fans. Being on Nicktoons first still didn't do it much justice other than the younger generation that didn't know DBZ can now see it.
Yeah its sad that Nicktoons (and perhaps to a greater extent Toonzai) ruined Dragon Ball Z Kai's rep in the West. Waaay to many nostalgia fags think Kai is some sort of heavily censored 4KIDS edit of Dragon Ball Z. Rather than a filler-less recut. It is sooo frustrating having to explain to them that no Kai did not censor ALL the blood and blue popo is not a Kai thing he's a 4kids thing.
I watched Kai on Nicktoons, and the changes weren't that extreme compared to Toonzai/4kids' version. Still had the attack names, (Galick Gun, Spirit Bomb.) Halos remained, Popo was still black, Gohan didn't have a badly edited eye during his training with Piccolo before Nappa and Vegeta showed up. Shenron was also still in the intro and Vegeta also punches Goku in the intro. The only edits it received were the ones to keep it TV-Y7-FV. (Changed the blood to dirt or spit. Removed swears, altered Roshi's drink and Bulma's underwear.) So really, Nicktoons version of Kai wasn't as heavily censored as some people think it was.
ch2010ize Dafuq you're saying? Nicktoons did a great job at handling Dragon Ball Kai. Yes they censored it but it didn't remove anything that was important to the storyline. Heck, the younger generation was even larger than Dragon Ball Z's Fanbase.
I don't care if I've seen Kai 20 times already, this gets me giddy. Also I wonder what happened to Toonami sending Bleach off with a special sendoff? :\
I watched all of Kai's original run on Nicktoons back in 2010-2011 but it was cropped and not HD (for me.) So let me just say OH GOD IT LOOKS SOOOOOOO GOOD. Not only that but Nicktoons censored stuff too, this is going to be so good watching it uncut. Please have the amazing Yamamoto music! I don't care if it's plagiarized! :(
I feel Kikuchi's soundtrack is boring and lifeless for the most part, but different strokes. I also dug Faulconer so what do I know, haha. And yeah, Nicktoons was fairly respectable. 4kids was barely DBZ IMO.
I liked Yamamoto because it was pretty catchy, and gave it a VERY different feel from Faulconer and even Kikuchi. It felt like a new-age cartoon serial, and I feel that's appropriate with Kai's presentation and just how much of a cultural mainstay Dragon Ball Z has become.
I've been comparing the uncut DBZ Kai with uncut DBZ and I've noticed one major difference some of you may not have noticed is that Kai uses stronger swears then uncut DBZ. The only swear uncut DBZ used was the h word and that was when they were actually referring to the place.

Not really. Japanese formal language doesn't really have swear words. They just have ways of saying things that are considered impolite. Like the common "kisama" that you here in Japanese versions doesn't actually mean "bastard" as it's usually translated in a fan sub. It's just an impolite way of addressing someone.
Starting next Saturday at midnight even the random times dbz was on brings me nastalgia I remember watching the tree of might and history of trunks at like 9pm when I was a kid thinking it was so badass that is was on late good times
That Kamehameha in the beginning was the most epic cut of one I have ever seen. Toonami really knows how to cut and promo. WHO, WERE, THESE EDITORS!?!?!
It wasn't made in HD, but the footage used for Kai was remastered in HD and it's available on Blu-ray. The sidebars have nothing to do with it being in HD or not, they're simply there to preserve the original aspect ratio.
I finally started watching this with my nephew. I feel bad I didn't get into this until now. Wish it had the original music tho. I'm just on the Frieza saga now (season 2)
You're right, it will have Dragon Ball Super dubbed on Toonami by the time the Buu Saga of Kai airs...because they're both Debuting on Toonami back to back starting on January 7th. It was just announced.

Dragon Ball Z Kai is hardly uncut. Like when Krillin fires a ki blast through Vegeta. Where originally he had a gaping hole in his chest (in the TV PG version, mind you) in Kai, he just gets a little red spot. It doesn't really matter, I know, but I just felt like pointing that out.
