ToonSquid Vs Procreate Dreams 

Toonsquid is basically everything that I wished procreate dreams would be. 7 months later and we STILL don’t have the selection tool. They said that they’re working to have it as soon as possible, but how “soon” exactly? It’s been over seven months.

Toonsquid is the real dream app!! The problem with PD that they sacrificed the features like liquify for the 1million canvas size, despite nobody on earth use it (I guess 8k is the max). I know because I asked them, and the answer was that never will liquify tool in it, because of the reason above. It could be so good!

Yes! More people are talking about ToonSquid, which is great! I mean, this app even has professional features like out-of-pegs for referencing your frames without the need to actually transform them. And flipping the drawing, which was added after users had asked for it. And the ability to quickly flip through drawings just swiping your fingers on the canvas is such a time-savior! The only flaw this software has is its IOS-restriction, but so do many professional drawing programs.

I'm part of the toonsquid team, I love this animation app especially since it's 10 DOLLARS ONE TIME PURCHASE ONLY! HOLY PLU- I used Callipeg before for a short time and I really liked Callipeg...until I saw the one time purchase in Callipeg. My hopes lost, my determination crumbling. Until in the midst of despair, Toonsquid reach out its hand to me and told me. "Buy me and I'll make your life easier." And then I was sold, i love Toonsquid and any other animation softwares kills my motivation. All except rough animator. Also I only have a slight problem with Toonsquid and that's...the bucket tool. I never liked procreate bucket tool and it's difficult to adjust to refill it my drawing with color.

I was really excited for Dreams but as soon as it released I went back to ToonSquid like “I’m so sorry my child, I’ll never leave you again…” Also, great work on the video!

I had the same experience as you, starting with dreams then trying toonsquid. There's such a huge difference in features and quality of life between them, I don't think the devs who made dreams are animators and it shows

I love Procreate, it's my favorite drawing program, so I thought that I would love Procreate Dreams. Yeah, no. Dreams seemed half baked at best. Maybe some day Dreams will be as good of an animation program as Procreate is as a drawing program, but today is not that day.

Dreams just released an updated roadmap after months of silence... even if they implement everything on the list, they will never have: - Vector graphics support - Symbols (re-usable animation loops) The second one is huge, since without it you have to copy and paste groups everywhere, and there is a very low group limit in the timeline in Dreams! I feel like they have so much trouble even with basic features that hell would freeze over before they could implement something huge like an entire vector editing subsystem to their app.

This is a really good video! I got hyped about Dreams and bought it almost as soon as it came out and then realized how dumb it was immediately and it hasn't improved a whole lot. Tbh just hearing about the lasso and the camera tool in ToonSquid made me lose it a little. Just goes to show that indie devs will usually wipe the floor with companies

I think all those animators who hyped up procreate dreams before the release owe us a huge apology. After buying and using Dreams, I felt conned. 😂

I’ve been using ToonSquid for a while now, and this was after years of using flipaclip which as you can imagine was an extreme culture shock lol 😆

About Rough animator - personally, i found myself using it even more than TS bc i like that its like extremely boiled down to its essence animation app, and because i ofter still have to do line art and color on the PC - i find it be great in its simplicity for... Rough animation, i guess😂 But yeah, if i need to create something finished exclusively on ipad - ToonSquid is the way to go! Great review. Also your voice over is very fun

Honestly I wrote off animation on the tablet because of Dreams; however you’ve inspired me to give the squid a go!

That was such a great video!!!! Captivating from start to finish and all the artwork was top tier! All the little squid drawings were very cute and the dog surprised and humored me greatly! Very impressed by this amazing video!

Toonsquid was the app I wish I knew existed before I tried flipaclip. (Flipaclip suuuucks!! It’s so tedious to animate using that app!!)

Thanks for the rec, I'll check it out! I was so excited for Dreams, but using it is soooo frustrating. The lack of lasso and selection tools is actually insane. If they were to add one I'd give it another chance cuz the procreate compatibility is pretty sweet...

Procreate Dreams does have Onion Skin. It’s when you go to Drawing mode, then you click on the time on the bottom left TIME numbers to choose the onion skin settings, such as color and how many steps or skins you want to see. Procreate Dreams does have a steep learning curve… especially for a noob like me… I was literally screaming in frustration at times because it was doing some wonky things (like when importing layers, like you mentioned), and the interface was driving me crazy. As you said though, the Performance mode does seem appealing, so I’ll try to stick it out with Dreams… hopefully, future updates will address major issues people are having with it.

I didn't even try Procreate Dreams because I knew it felt like the regular Procreate, which I didn't really like either. I kinda resigned myself to believing that there were no animation apps on iOS that I would like. It's nice knowing that I could be wrong

When I started animating I used flipppaclip, for a good while I did, until I made more complex animations needing more tools, which they didn’t have, so I saw ToonSquid and was like: yes

I was expecting so much from procreate dreams, I literally bought the app thinking it’d be an animation app with all the previous features from procreate, I came to realize that that didn’t have audio scrubbing, no auto drawing tools and every single tap on that app is an undo button, man it took me so long to create a simple animation. It deserves its three star rating currently, Toonsquid, on the other hand, is amazing.

Wow! Very impressive take on how you view these apps. Personally, I love both apps at almost the same level as I believe that they both have their pros and cons exclusive to them. However, I mostly use PDreams even with its lackluster features….i just feel at home there better than ToonSquid. Don’t get me wrong though, for I totally agree with your view on this but at the end of the, it’s all about perspective and preferences and also individual experience. No doubt ToonSquid top the charts with the most features, can’t dispute that. But for me, I just preferred PDreams more to work with and so far it serves me well…….though I still cry out for more features and I damn well scrutinize them harder at every chance I get. Good video and I love your voice 😂!

Ive been working on a big project for the past 8 months, since Dreams came out, and found Ive been getting nowhere... might need to invest in toonsquid after watching this video... Ive never used ToonSquid before so im hoping I can get used to it quick, and hopefully their brush catalog is just as expansive as Procreate's. If not, I might need to import some assets from procreate and dreams into toonsquid

I really really love toonsquid! I think the only thing I get frustrated with is that the camera will always move as fast as your animated framerate. I would really like to just be able to animate on 7fps with the camera being at 24 or higher lmao

There's one more good thing about procreate dreams apart from performance mode is that you can keyframe warp and some some effects like hsb/gaussian blur. But i literally didn't like how they sacrificed the most desired liquify option in dreams just because of 1m*1m canvas size which literally no one on earth uses.

I bought dreams back in December knowing they didn’t have the lasso tool but I thought “ah they’ll probably add it in next week.” The Procreate team is honestly pretty good at listening to what the users want but with dreams it’s been kinda 😬 Like they are soooo quick to add features for the new Apple Pencil but not for the damn lasso tool

One thing that I really wish procreate dreams had was an editable curves function(AKA easings) The basic ones they offer are fine but I would love a way to make snappy tweens. Although coloring an animation my hand was both painful and satisfying. I don't really use the lasso tool the much anyways even when I'm normally drawing so that's probably why it doesn't bother me as much as it does for other people. I kind hate the fill bucket though. Like, why drag & drop? Why? On the occasion I use Krita I'm like: why do I have the coloring done in two minutes? (My character designs aren't even that complicated.) And yeah the blurry-ness when your zoomed out is *weird.* Although I don't really need anything too complicated. If I can draw and have access to layer settings I'm happy. Also I like they're copy and paste way better than FlipaClip's. -I made an 3+ minute animatic and half of it was done in FlipaClip and I remember my wrist getting sore from copy and pasting so much. I find the dragging out frames much more comfortable. I might just be used to it's weird interface.

I HATE PROCREATE DREAMS, HERES WHY. Procreate dreams has hidden ALL the tools making it harder to use the FRICKING APP! Compared to procreate all the tools such as the undo button IS NOT EVEN VISIBLE!! Using your finger to undo is basically IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME. Useing procreate dreams is like trying to use kakshi’s copy justu. This is just my experience with dreams, but I’ll be sticking with procreate to animate.

Great video-I’m definitely a ToonSquid evangelist. Spread the word, because the ToonSquid guy doesn’t have the big marketing budget that Procreate has. Ever notice how much support and promotion Apple’s App Store gives to Procreate Dreams? Or how many skillshare courses there are for PD, with art influencers, meanwhile ToonSquid doesn’t have any??? Help the little guys!

Hey i agree its very frustrating to work with dreams … the UI is unintuitive and unpractical The timeline keeps resizing itself if you don’t touch the screen the right way and its so hard to grab the end of a frame to adjust the duration And the fact that you can’t copy a deformer key ?? How am i supposed to make loops ? (Well i know how : you have to know what your animation will be and how it will loop BEFORE doing anything, so its made for professionals but lacks so many professional features) I mostly bought procreate dreams because i wanted a tablet alternative to live 2d so i could animate my twitch emotes 😭 I like the side of humour you put in the video 🤭

1:34 Ouch the sudden slander on FlipaClip is WILD….but yeah reasonable enough lol. Especially if you’re someone who gets easily irked by advertisements or an unremovable watermark after exporting (plus the limited layers was an issue before the implementation of “free after watching an add” alternative). I’m sort of a believer that it’s not fully the program to blame, it’s the skill set of the individual which determines quality. Anyone has the capability to make the most out of using a limited amount of available tools. The animators who still use Flipnote Studio are proof of it. But of course it is also important to be comfortable with the program you use, or else animating will just become frustrating and not fun. Anyways I enjoyed the video, was very informative and you have such a fun cartoony expressive artstyle. Mayhaps I will check out Toonsquid :))

I paid 20 dollars for an app that REALLY needed time to cook more and to come with detailed instructions. well at least I have calipeg that cost me 60 dollars........you're going to make me want to spend 10 more dollars on this.

About the camera thing: In Procreate dreams it isn't a camera, it's keyframes. Toonsquid also has that feature if you click the little diamond shape at the bottom. :] Idk how to explain the entire feature here lol

I lowkey regret spending 20 dollars on PD for my bday when it first came out when I could’ve gotten toonsquid for half that price and better, makes me feel like I’ve wasted my money tbh but I was so excited for PD because, well, I LOVE procreate, so it was a huge disappointment when I tried animating in it and realized how difficult it was to animate when I was rlly looking forward to moving on from tweening to starting frame by frame animation and making animatics, and in an app that made the same app that I love using to draw at that, but I sorta just gave up on it now 😭😭😭 I hope someday it’ll be just as good as toonsquid tho, and I can stop feeling immense amounts of guilt and regret whenever I see ppl happy w their toonsquid app while I feel like I’ve made a poor decision getting PD lmao-

I feel procreate dreams was too busy trying to work with tool tricks and shortcuts rather than something to help with the drawing part. Personally, once lasso drops, it’ll make a LOT of things easier.

I love ToonSquid so much, I do wish they would port it over to PC and Mac.

I wish i could move to toonsquid cuz its def a rl good app buttt I draw from my thumb so struggle drawing in landscape so I have toonsquid sitting for like a year already waiting for a portrait mode 💔 also love how everyone is dissing flipaclip but Ima be so fr rn I'm so used to it and love it to the point I draw on it too 😇

I think the only thing that’s good about procreate dreams is the puppet movement especially if you’re not fully animating your characters. I used that to a lot for my videos but the downside is that is hard to animate there I keep accidentally double clicking and having a hard time spreading my sheet .😢 but I do want to try this app out. But one question is it easy to download music in there ?

Toonsquid is pretty great but I still like Calipeg a bit more.

I stupidly wasted $20 on Procreate Dreams. And the kicker is I’m not an animator so I didn’t even use it. I’m currently using Flip a Clip working on my very first animation. I’m still going to use that, but I’m definitely going to check out ToonSquid

i dont care what people say i like procreate dreams my animations are great on there and you will get used to it more, im glad i got it. i hate flipaclip though it just doesn't work for me i give procreate dreams 7.5 ranking :D

As someone who had Procreate dreams, but immediately deleted it a few weeks after having it yeah Procreate dreams sucks-definitely trying out this tune squid if my parents will allow me to have it because it cost money. and you can have onion skin in Procreate dreams,but in Procreate dreams you have to press the time/length button in the very corner of the canvas in order to enable it, which is absolutely stupid that it’s not a default on.

Honestly, Procreate Ahlam needs to make some improvements

I remember the start of summer hearing about this video through the grapevine and it got me hyped, once again our lord goddess Animation on a Budget comes and delivers an excellent product review. At 0:00 you can see her signature naked moel rat teeth which she only bares during times of extreme happiness. The pony animation would have been sick! Is this now considered AOAB lost media? Will she release the rough draft on her second channel 'Animation 2: Electric Budgetloo' hopefully so I'd be so excited to see it! Congrats on 6.66K subscriber btw, big achievement! I know all those baby goats you had to sacrifice took a toll on your psyche. STILL NO LASO TOOL HOW COULD THEY POSSIBLY BE SO FOOLISH?????? ProCreate is the worst company ever and I heard they like to kick puppies, WITH STEEL TOED BOOTS! I redid your mom. You should get a ToonSquid affiliate link so they can pay you for all this meat riding. Overall I'd rate this video a solid 9/10! As always AOAB delivers a superior product compared to other animators, all hail queen Ranch Dressing!

It hurts to say , but so far procreate dreams has been disappointing. I wish it had a similar layout to procreate , with gesture controls being optional. I was wrong. I hate how they went about it. And i fwel guilty about it because i felt procreate did a lot for artists at a time where adobe was screwing them over. But i just cant animate in PD , its system works agraist my usual workflow. Its actually more pleasant for me to animate in procreate rather than procreate dreams , which is kind of ironic. Rn the most i use pd for is to edit speedpaint videos and it still gives me problems. And i pre-ordered it! It feels like they rushed this out. The learning curve is steep too. Gratingly steep. Why doesn't the fill tool work like it does in procreate? Why is it tedious to animate in? And changing the animation duration is a chore. Why did they make it addbup so weirdly? I know dreams is meant to compete against after effects but geeze. Its not doing a very good job of it. But toosnquid, i worked with toonsquid a while before dreams came out. It so far has been one of my favorite software to animate on. Its everything i thought and wished dreams was. It can do frame by frame animation and work similar to how flash did. Hard to think one guy did all this! It has its short comings , but it beats out clip in how fun and easy it is to pick up. Plus- vector layer animations! I've been wanting toonsquid to get more notoriety and hopefully more tutorials and animations come out for it. One can dream.

I have a ios generation 9 iPad and all I need is Wi-Fi now ..

But also, ToonSquid is better than FlipaClip. Because there is one thing that made want to download it. *key frames* and easier to animate lip sync

The only thing I really like about Procreate is just that it has good effects, Me personally, I like Toonsquid better because you can animate however you want, Me ofc trying to animate BFDI :) Edit: Also you can check out some of my posts to see what I mean.
