What do you expect when the most legendary engineer in rock music history teams up with Toontrack to create an expansion for Superior Drummer 3? Well, nothing less than that big drum sound which shaped rock music as we know it today. In my review, I'll go in-depth on that question.

Was waiting for your video to drop. Great review as usual Mike. I think this Rock SDX just made my decision between Decades and Hansa more complicated. What a great problem to have.
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
Well, I think this problem will occur for many people. It's really a tough decision and cannot be answered easily, to be honest. In the end it's really a subjective thing. Ask yourself what genre do you live in the most? How many instruments do you really need? How good are your mixing skills ... just trying to narrow down the options, if you know what I mean. Thanks for watching, appreciate it!

Thanks Mike, awesome review and demo! Actually this library seems to be what I've been waiting for over the years since getting the fantastic soundig "Custom & Vintage SDX" that (soundwise) has allways been my favorite. I own almost all Toontrack SDXs (which is total overkill, but pure joy, anyway), all are insanely good sounding , BUT I very, very often ended up using the C&V because its sound and charakter fits my needs so perfectly! Now my beloved C&V SDX seems to have met its successor!

Hi Mike, great great review! You are my go to for the ezx and sdx reviews. I do a lot of recording in different studios and I really think you have a good point in the use of these kits not just for big rock drum sound. A lot of studios have older great kits to do their main tracking and these can and are just as raw and precise in that way. Foundation to get anything sound wise. ProcessIng for modern or other genres is usually what I see so why not start with a natural kit which thankfully hasn’t ever really gone away. Cool!!
@MikeLuke

Hey Phil, thanks for your kind words, which I really appreciate. And yeah, there's a reason why so many studios still rely on old and vintage drums. They just sound unique and warm, yet still with character. Get the sound right at the source as they say ;)

Hey Mike, thanks for the review! How does this compare to Rooms of Hansa? I may be wrong, but from my reading they seem similar -- Hansa seems very rock oriented and the Marble Room and Meistersaal give you the big rock sound. Do you think its worth it to have both or is there alot of redundancy?
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
Hey Trevor, I think I‘ll make a video about that topic as many start to ask exactly that. Anyway, my 2 cents: Hansa is special by any means. It’s really about the rooms, you basically get four SDX in one. And still probably the best recorded SDX ever as engineer Michael Ilbert fully understood the idea behind SD3. This Legacy of Rock is a hommage to the great rock bands and artists from the 60s and 70s. It serves that purpose and does is extremely well. Hansa in that sense sounds more complex, definitely more modern. However, either the sounds of those four rooms fit to your productions (then it’s amazing) or it doesn’t. While the LoR seems to me more versatile and more flexible.

Hey Mike, What are your thoughts on Roland RT Surface mounted triggers? I have an acoustic hybrid kit and am using them at present and wonder if the internal triggers are really that much better?
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
Well, Roland‘s stuff is usually very, very good. I found that on a snare the internal triggers are better in capturing all subtle notes. On toms, you don‘t really need internal triggers IMO.

Hard to compare, to be honest, as the rooms contribute so much to the overall drum sound and the Galaxy Studios (Belgium) in which the core library had been recorded is so freakin‘ huge. But yeah, as both kits have been tuned and sampled by the same drummer (Norman Garschke), they will sound similar. For me it’s never a question which I prefer. It’s more a question of when do I need what sound.

Eddie Kramer is, without any doubt, my engineer/ producer idol. I am a bit older than you, Mike, so when I was first learning about Rock music, KISS were just in their prime of that first band line-up. My first KISS album was "Love Gun", and that was all Eddie's. To this day, Ace Frehley says that KISS was always their best when Eddie was recording them. And I can't argue with Ace. He is spot on. Bob Ezrin was fantastic too-- but Eddie got the band at their most raw fundamentals. Just listen to KISS "Ace Frehley" solo album... of all the 4 solo albums, Ace's album was the most in yer face, kick butt. I only wish that one of the sampled drums would have been a Pearl kit like Peter Criss during those 70s albums. Though, I understand that there is only so much time and money to put together these sound libraries and the most requested would be the Zep, Hendrix, Rolling Stones kits. Maybe we can get a volume 2 with Pete's drums...lol. And I'm not even going to get started on all the fantastic work Eddie did with Zep, Hendrix, Anthrax... the list goes on. Toontrack really blessed us with this Eddie Kramer library.

Mike, if I love the drums and cymbals of a legacy of rock kit, but want to add some more toms, how do I go about that? Can I open a kit in Death/ Darkness SDX and then pick the Legacy drums and cymbals instead of the native drums and cymbals? And then tune the Legacy toms to add additional toms?
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
Hi Klaus, yes, that’s doable. Just keep in mind though that both SDX have been recorded in different rooms with different mics, so don’t expect the sound of this hybrid kit to be consistent, you might need to further tweak.
@Bezowinz
@Bezowinz 3 года назад
Can you comment on how much the presets rely on bus processing? I tend to use multi-output routing and often have to rebuild the sound of SDX presets in my DAW. I like many of the presets I've heard but wonder how useful they'd be to me.
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
Haven’t checked all of them, to be honest. From what I‘ve seen I can tell that the Eddie Kramer presets use bus processing, Toontrack has several options. But I see where you‘re coming from, I use multi-outs as well.
@Bezowinz
@Bezowinz 3 года назад
Mike Luke thanks! I wish they would mix presets with multi-out routing in mind.
@Bezowinz
@Bezowinz 3 года назад
Do you use Toontrack presets when recording. If so, I'm curious how you mix them. Do you multi-out route them or use the stereo out? If multi, do you just rebuild the mix/preset? I imagine you don't rely on presets as much as I do, if at all. Cool learning experience, but I end up having to copy the bus processing in my DAW because I always use multi-out routing.
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
When I record, I usually don‘t use any preset or if I do, then I‘ll use a slightly processed one from the core library. And after my recording I might switch to other expansions to see if they maybe fit even better. The mixing takes places in my DAW for several reasons. A preset never „knows“ what I actually need in my mix, so I have to mix my drums in any case anyway.
@Bezowinz
@Bezowinz 3 года назад
@@MikeLuke ok. I use the presets as a starter for the basic sound. But yes, the mix is always done in my DAW, which is why I multi route everything. Not the worse thing since, yeah, a preset never knows what a mix needs.

@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
Hi Billy. The difference between the EZX and the respective SDX in general is that the EZX include less kits to choose from and that the sound is pre-processed by Toontrack. With the SDX you‘ll have the full control to shape the sound however you want, the EZX is more mix-ready. So if you don‘t want to spend hours for mixing and tweaking anyway, the Classic Rock EZX might be the one to pick here.

@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
I second Doug's comment. Death & Darkness is a bit misleading as a name. In the end it is - just as an example - a Yamaha Recording Custom with a Ludwig Black Beauty snare and some Meinl Byzance cymbals. A setup every recording engineer around the world would immediately grab to record any song or genre. The samples themselves are rather punchy, but you can easily tame this with EQ or compression. However, there's some vibe and character on some other SDX or EZX which might fit better to blues, jazz, soul and funk. Death & Darkness just contains metal snare drums, but sometimes you want or need a warm wooden snare sound. So if you ask me if you really NEED the Death & Darkness (while having most of the others), I'd probably say "No".
@FernandoLobo
@FernandoLobo 3 года назад

@mikeluke how would you rate this compared to their last sdx decades, hansa, death&darkness & legacy of rock? i have to play legacy to can say how good it is but the other ones: 3: hansa 2:decades 1:death/darkness sound quallity is suberb from all their latest sdx but deaht/darkness is the holy grail i would say :)
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
That’s a tough one. Because „the best“ always heavily depends on so many variables. Sound is often subjective. Death and Darkness matches more the sound people are used to from nowadays productions. Hansa and Decades serve a different purpose, Hansa more rock, Decades more pop/swing/jazz. The Legacy of Rock is pure 70s rock. In the end it depends on the song, as always.
@justin1603
@justin1603 3 года назад
@@MikeLuke of course you are right...its all about the song and personal taste but i ment it more in a soundquallity way,,,what the best sampled one? death and darkness seems almost perfect and i am corious how good legacy of rock sounds...its their second biggest liabry to date

Marc V. Oh, I see. Well, to me the best recorded library is still Hansa. Decades is close, too. LoR I haven‘t tested that much in the last days, will need to spend some additional time with it.

@@MikeLuke TBH it wasn't one of their better nights, the rhythm section was solid (JB & JPJ the melody not so much (JP and RP). The only time the melody came together was when JPJ played keyboards. The band hit the stage at 9O'Clockish with no opening act and left before 10pm with no encore. The Rolling Stones riot at the same venue that happened the summer before had everyone wondering if was going to happen again as we filed out. Mind blowing experience for a 13 year old headed to high school that fall.

Even though it's labeled as a 70's Rock sounding library, I think there is still something that improves in each and every expansion that comes out besides details and articulations, it's the snare sound quality. I would buy this one just for the sound of the Supraphonic snare and the Acrolite. It's litteraly some dream snares, yes I love Aluminium snare much more than brass (Supraphonic over Black Beauty anyday ! :P) But it's a 180 GB, plus another 180 Gb for installation, my hard drive can't handle it for the moment sadly... If I just re-install the Core library wich is around 50GB, would I be able to tu use all the mics (near, mid, far..) and bleeds of any expansions correctly? I have to say that I barely use the Core library so If i can just install the basic install (part 1) and run the expansions on full mode correctly, just let me know !!! Thanx a lot ! Very nice review as always, my wallet knows what's coming when I decide to watch your videos man ahahah !
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
Yes, to run SD3 you just need to core installation and do not need all additional bleed or room mics. On Toontrack‘s website (FAQ) there‘s a how-to-install-guideline, you might wanna check that as well. And I have to disagree on the snares: I‘d always go for the Black Beauty instead ;);)

High polished glossy samples? No thanks! This expansion sounds amazing! Very warm, can't wait to get some tape dirt on this! :D Also the snare sounds! Great, hope this helps my workflow since I mostly work on classic/vintage stuff. Thanks Mike!

Yeah, agreed. Looking at the presets from Eddie Kramer ... he did exactly that. Adding a huge amount of tape saturation on every track plus some compression (though rather subtle) and here you go: organic, warm and big.

@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
Hi Walter.

I have one main problem with this SDX. In the 70's and 80's, people used a slew of rack toms. I can't believe they would try to pass this off. Sure the Stones, Zeppelin and Beatles were instrumental as was Eddie. I hope they come out with a second Legends of Rock for the rock bands that paved the way for the 80's. Yes, Rush, Deep Purple, King Crimson....
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 3 года назад
I see your point. Even though it‘s an older SDX, but you might wanna check the „Metal Foundry“ SDX. This expansion did actually capture that 70s sound with toms all over the place ;) Do some research on this or watch the official video from Toontrack and you‘ll see how they recorded those huge setups.

Hi Bob, for years I've subscribed to Google Play Music Family Plan. I have 6 of us using it for $18/month. Every time I need to learn a new song or someone recommends something to listen to I find it. The bitrate is high and it sounds good. A huge side benefit is when you're signed in there are no ads in RU-vid. They are migrating it to RU-vid Premium, I migrated my account to it and it appeared to allow me to use it the same way (targeted listening of my own selections). I do sometimes click the "station" button for an artist - the resulting playlists are reasonable. I have my own playlists for covers I want to learn - listen later etc.

Really disappointed in LEGACY of Rock and Rooms of Hansa. While the raw recording is good, most of the presets are simply unusable and many are just horrible. Guess the engineers ran out of ideas and just threw in juck for filler. AND.. Why did they cheap out on the number of toms in the kits? I understand the Amber kit is a recreation of Bonham's Amber Vistalite so ok, but why so few toms in the other kits? They have dozens of mics and channels so you have 52 (lol) channels of surround sound (God knows why that matters) and 3 drums. ? Really? You got the mics , the studio, the experts , record a couple more drums in the set just in case I need them, because I probably will. These last two SDX offerings are losers. If you are going to spend the time to record 7.1 surround at least do a handful of usable presets and a full 4 Tom setup.
