I picked up a Darter and it has been great, apart from the back side of the blade (serrations) tearing up the sheath and thus blade coating. I've been nervous about picking up another Toor with many bad reviews, especially on the folders.
I have the very same problem with the Jank Shank that I received today. It may not be a major problem but for what one pays for these knives they should be spot on.
Don't freak out people. The brand is not trash. Lots of makers have had issues. Brands like benchmade have had periods of bad qc, and come out of it. These guys have worked hard and are still working out problems. I'm not defending bad work. I'm just saying...they have just blown up, and their orders are overwhelming. If this continues...ok. don't buy. Don't boycott a US brand from one video. Give them a chance to make it right. You can't know why this happened.
Exactly I think that knives makers like toor, Montana knife company, grizzly forge are worth the money. All American made and all custom knives. Toor uses cnc machines and a few other things. grizzly forge is 100% forged so every knife is different and they are pretty pricey but his knives are unique
I've yet to see a review on any TOOR blade that didnt have at least *ONE* issue with theirs. Multiple models, multiple issues, multiple examples...100% unacceptable especially when going after the market segment they're aiming for.
Wow! I'm glad I saw this video and a few others like this bc I was thinking about purchasing a blade from them but I am not going to anymore given the high price and the apparent and obvious defects in their blades and company! So disappointing!
Wow. Thanks for the review. All of these problems could potentially be overlooked on a knife a fraction of the price. For the premium they demand this is unacceptable.
Woah, QC issues for sure. Was almost about to pull a trigger on one of their knives, will not be doing that now. Thank you for your great in-depth review. Cheers from Finland.
I have been looking at possibly buying something from Toor Knives since I like the designs and blade steel used. However, the most recent reviews showing the poor quality have turned me off a bit. Instead I purchased an RMJ Unmei. (Another easy to conceal US made fixed blade.) After seeing this review I decided to take a closer look at my new blade. *gasp!* It has the same lack of symmetry along the spine as the Toor. (The plan was to buy a second RMJ if I like this one, so nope.) It is now sitting in the box and being shipped back to the dealer tomorrow. When paying $250-$300 for a knife, the quality should be nothing less than stellar. I want to buy local and American made but not if it's sub par. What happened to pride in your work? Anyway, I have the Bastinelli Creations Red V2 sitting in my shopping cart now. Frustrating... Thanks for the overview! Cheers, Greg
Damn that sucks to hear but good that you are getting your money back. I have been eyeing their blades and even their mini swords haha. Honestly the Razorback or the Dynamis blade are amazing, Dom really did a great job with the sheath too. Others have told me to check out Amtac blades. Both made in the USA.
@@CivilianWarrior Tactical Elements told me that they have not had any quality issues with RMJ in the past. Other than the symmetry issue the knife was really nice. So maybe I received a bad copy. There are not many reviews of RMJ blades out there so it's hard to say with such a small sample size whether or not it's a trend... I have also been doing some more research on Toor knives. It seems as though they are now using some really nice machinery to cut their blades. As such maybe the quality will be as it should. Another RU-vidr was elated with his Toor knife. So at this point I'm still considering them as an option. Although I will contact them before I order if I go that route.... I checked out the makers you mentioned. While they look like stellar blades there are a few reasons I wouldn't purchase them. First, the draconian laws here in WA limit me to a 3.5" long concealed blade, and no doubled edge blades etc. I'll push the length a bit but a double edge weapon might be hard to defend in court if I needed to use it in a self defense scenario. Lastly, I do use my knives which makes me reluctant to drop $400 plus on one. (diminishing returns) That's just me though... Keep the videos coming! People gain from the content and the conversations it spawns....
@@GregAllen2 ah ok yeah that all makes sense. I don't use my fixed blades for anything but defense. If I need to open a box, cut rope or anything else I use my swiss army farmer alox pocket knife, or if at home, one of my microtech ultratechs. I'll still try RMJ and do a review later on. Thank you for the support and kind words too, I appreciate it!
wow that's unacceptable. this is out of my budget but I was thinking of saving for one. if I overreached for this blade and got one like this I would be PISSED! especially if they ignored me when trying to contact them.
Completely unacceptable especially for the price and market target. Thanks for posting this. I was going to get one of their blade but I think I'll pass now.
I had a few of the same issues with a Darter I was gifted. How they make it past QC is mind blowing. My flaws were just as obvious. I did get a new one sent out. Still had issue with the g10 not being even with the full tang. Should've got a microtech socom alpha and saved $150
Sorry to hear that. You'd think they would have looked over the replacement a few times to make sure it was perfect seeing how it was replacing one you weren't happy with. Microtech makes some good stuff, I own 3 ultratechs.
I own two Toor blades that came with a good fit and finish. I got them both while they were on sale and all in all, even with the 20% discount and having the knives on sale, they are truly overpriced for what they are. My biggest complaint with Toor is the knives come with no carry option, you have to buy the attachment yourself. At their price point they disappoint me and I’d be extra bitter to receive a knife with numerous flaws. Based on what I’ve read their customer service is also atrocious
Have a toor serpent zombie. First of all it wasn't properly sharpened from the box but it's okay, then their sheath is not constructed properly so knife slices or stabs it If I'm not looking at how I put it in. Plus, which is might be my fault (however ka-bar, tops and two esses are still perfectly fine) but after sitting in the box for couple months got rust on the edge
I have the Anaconda and the Field2.0. I think they're fine blades, but I am also bothered by the grips not being flush to the tang. I don't have any blade QC issues, but the handle scales definitely need work.
Nice! I like the design of the anaconda. Maybe contact them and ask if they can redo the grips? Guess you could always do it yourself if you have a dremel and sandpaper. I just think regardless of the price, the grips should be flush.
@@CivilianWarrior I just got one of their Mullet knives, one of the scales sits below the tang (the other is flush). The thumb rest jumping is not fully deburred either. I sent it back for a fix and they deemed it sufficient for their QC standard of a “production knife”. Kind of a joke to have these issues on a $300+ knife. Really soured my view on the brand.
@@Twigz11 wow thats so wrong. Guess their lifetime guarantee is also a joke and they blame the customers so they don't have to replace anything. So they did nothing? Did you have to pay them to have your blade shipped back to you?
@@CivilianWarrior It’s still with them, I have a phone call scheduled with someone there on Monday. But I had to pay to ship it back. And looking at their policy I’m facing a 25% restocking fee. So basically I open the box, see sloppy work and get charged $81 for the privilege of inspecting and returning it.
I was looking at one of their knives but the price was a little high so I went to watch some reviews I'm glad I watched this video .. it's too bad because I love a few of their designs
I want one of those Zev Winklers so bad. I have a Dynamis Revere and noticed its grind is uneven as well. I'm only particluar with my spear points, but this is unfortunate to see.
@@CivilianWarrior Thank you for the reply and checking. It looks like it might have sold sometime last month. I get their alerts for Winkler knives, but often it's sold before I even open the web page. I work in the Knife Shop at Bass Pro #1, and maybe one day I'll have one of these or the Ed Brown K1. Two dream knives right there.
Without sounding like I’m defending toor but I wouldn’t be too concerned about the heat treat, I’m sure it was done to spec. The off centre tip wouldn’t concern me too much as long as the edge is straight. The handles tho yeh no excuse for that. Hope they sort it out for you.
I know old video but just wanted to say I have the Toor XT1 Bravo Carbon Fiber and I’m very happy with it but sharpening wasn’t perfect right out of the box and it’s on washers so the action definitely doesn’t drop shut but it flips open pretty snappy
Always thought they had really cool designs but thought they were a lil overpriced, with these qc issues I am definitely not getting one just gonna make my own lol
I was super stoked for the Toor Knives 'Sicarios', but all the different variations of each edition have shown there's no true identity, and the name is more of a gimmick. Wish they would have worked with Ed Calderon and produced actual purpose designed knives if they were going to use this name. And yes, if they're going to charge nearly as much as Winkler or Wenger knives, the quality control needs to step up.
It's been 5 months since this video first went up and I just got a special edition Blue Steel Serpent from Toor. The same grinds on my knife are uneven as well.
@@CivilianWarrior No, I really don't want to pay a restocking fee, and I planned to slightly modify the knife anyway so I think I'll just keep it and use it as a workhorse. There's nothing else wrong with it other than it's not as sharp as I think a $300 knife should be.
Uhhh..... bizarre... This is OUTSTANDINGLY bad... I wonder if they have different teams working on the fixed blades / folders. I just purchased a $250 Merchant from them, and everything online seems to be great so far..... But this has me VERY worried.
I’ve owned both a Took Darter and Tomahawk, both were expensive and both let my expectations down. When I emailed Toor support they kept me in an e-mail loop for months, and when I commented on an Instagram post about my issues, one of the owners (I believe it was Conor Toor) treated me like an idiot. Will never buy a Toor again
Sorry to hear that. At least they got back to you. Apparently it wasn't until after I posted this and it had 5k views that the CFO tried reaching out to me via email. They actually emailed my father who waited 6 months before telling me about the email lol.
Solid vid. I've considered Toor Knives for a bit now but something was holding me back, other than the price. Thank you for the info, that is some horrible quality control right there. I'm perfectly happy with my Pro-Tech Rockeye's as my fixed EDC. That Winkler is a beauty, what's it called? I didn't catch the name of it, some type of collaboration between designers.
Thanks for the subscription! That other blade is a collaboration between winkler and zev technologies. They only made 100 of them and it's the only blade I can't bring myself to use😏
I just ordered one today. Now, as far as what your showing being detrimental to the knife, I highly doubt it, as long as the heat treat was properly done, but like others are saying here, for what they cost that should have been addressed before they shipped it out. That being said I am a huge Randall knife fan, and I have seen a few of them that had some issues. If mine comes in like yours, I will definitely send it back, if the second one is the same I will cancel the transaction
I really hope you don't have any issues. I was thinking of giving them another try but then more ppl commented. Which model did you get? Please let us know how it turned out 👍
I know the feeling of disappointment you have. When I was first getting into “high end” knives, I decided to buy a Mid-Tech Darrel Ralph that was around $350. That was a fortune for a knife to me, but Bladeforums was really good about removing Darrel Ralph smear, it seems. When it came the lock would fail from barely tappingthe back of the blade, the flipper/choil was so tight at the junction of the first finger it wouldn’t have fit a kid’s finger there, and when I disassembled the knife to try and salvage the lockup, the inlays in the handle had pieces of magazine paper behind them because the g10 was too thin to accommodate the hardware. Worst knife I have ever owned, worse than a gas station knife. Thanks for posting this video so I didn’t feel that same disappointment again by buying a Toor.
I tried getting in touch with them, called, emailed, left @comments on Instagram and even sent DM via Instagram. Didn't hear back until I posted video. They left a comment to which I replied and again they went silent afterwards
I almost purchased a Toor knife. But after watching all the bad reviews and a few of their own videos. It was a major no go. They just seem over hyped and shady. I ended up going with a Stroup TU2.
@@CivilianWarrior Maybe around 4 months now. Honestly it’s a nice knife, especially the size…..for me at least. The texturing he does to the steel I could do without. And I had to touch up the retention on the sheath a bit. But overall I really like it.
Wow, I have some TOPS blades that were all under $150 that have much better QC than that. I had been considering a couple of Toor's models the past few but I've lost quite a bit of interest.
Why are you beating on logs with a small tactical knife? NONE of the issues you showed would make a fly shits worth of difference in a situation that this knife is indented to be used in. Should it have a better fit and finish? yes. would it matter in selfdefence or a knife fight? fuck no.
No, I don't want to say they never answer their phones bc several other ppl have said their calls have never gone unanswered. I then reached out through Instagram, first I DM them and then posted maybe two or three times on their posts with "@" and also never replied. I believe they posted a comment on here to which I replied with a question and again never heard back.
That hawk does look nice, thought about giving them another try with that f13 but then decided to get more skydiving jumps in and get closer to my b license. I'd love to hear what you think about it when you get it. Hope it's better quality than mine was.
i agree, for that price the knife should be flawless, i've seen $20 knives with better fit&finish. i too have a toor (merchant folder) and there are also a lot of complaints on that model from other people, luckily mine didn't have any of them. the part with not responding sucks @ss and is really really ugly, there's nothing worse than buying an expensive but flawed knife and then getting no support from the maker. really sorry for you :-(
@@CivilianWarrior i just got a toor chasm tanto and when i close it, the edge of the blade hits the backspacer. it even came with a chunk of the edge missing...then i took a look at the stock photos and even these models have a nick in the edge..ugh! luckily i bought it from a good dealer so i can return it. last toor for me, they really need to get better tolerances before i consider them again. cheers man and have a good day!
@@RU-vid-Censorship-Police sorry to hear it didn't work out but glad to hear it was easy to return it and you weren't stuck trying to sell it through Craigslist or eBay like I did
That does suck, they are about to drop the folders and I am highly interested in one of those. Now, I have hesiations. What has Toor done to fix this issue?
If you get one, please tell me how it came out. Was never able to get a hold of them as I mentioned in the video. They commented on here, I asked what they would have done if I still had this blade and haven't responded since I left them a reply maybe two weeks ago. Another person said the tip on their fixed blade broke off after having it for a day, he said Toor did nothing to fix it. Another person said they had an issue and were charged a 15% restocking fee. I'm still curious to hear what they would have done if I still had this blade.
@@CivilianWarrior That sucks that they aren't in contact with you. Plenty of excellent knife makers out there that will stand behind their knives. I will keep you posted on my purchase if I make it.
Yeah that was an issue I noticed from the first draw and just got worse with every draw even after loosening the screws. I kept thinking I was the only one. I was thinking of giving them another try but I keep seeing comments from others saying they too have experienced the same issues on other models. I really hope they get their OC under control and can turn things around. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
All my toor knives have had some sort of questionable or non refined work done to them when they arrived to me if they even arrive. Used to get every limited edition and after the blue grip and silver blade sof series blade didn’t show up after 4 months and multiple emails back and forth telling me to wait I demanded getting a full refund because I even purchased the extra insurance in case that happened. 100% dissatisfied with the quality, pricing and customer service. Literally have nothing good to say and I’ve owned somewhere around 7 knives back when I didn’t know much about knife quality. 1/10 would never recommend
Damn man, sorry to hear that but glad you got your money back from them. I read all comments on here I think you've had the worst experience of anyone so far who's posted.
As a knife collector myself I tend not to hop on the band waggon and follow the trend of Instagram operator stuff. I have never had a QC problem like this with Tops knives.
Yeah Tops makes great stuff. Other thing I learned is lifetime guarantees aren't really lifetime. It's just as long as the company is in business. Nocturnal knives is a great example
You can get Bastien Coves factory knife far superior. Hell order a Smilodon from DirkPinkerton. If they can’t do a grind you know they Fubared the heat treat.
This is pretty disheartening. Coming from a veteran owned couple, they should have taken way more pride in this blade. It has the potential of being a beautiful useful knife. Thats too bad that they don’t even bother to get back with you to make it right. I think I’ll stick with TOPS.
Can't recall if I mentioned it in my HFB vid but one of the times I went in to pick up my blade I noticed more than 5 push damascus push daggers on a desk. I asked if I could take a look at them, they said sure. Then asked if they were going up on the site soon and was told no. They weren't bc they didn't meet Andrews standards. I looked them over and didn't see anything wrong with them. If you follow HFB, you know his blades sell out within 1 min or less these days. He could have easily made a good amount of money by selling them but didn't. Haven't seen any push daggers for sale since them. Bc of this, I fully respect and trust all of his blades and will continue buying more. Hoping his custom books open soon.
You did mention it one of the many reasons I like them and that is the only negative is how difficult it is to get a hold of them but makes it so worth it when you do if you have not checked out the Jack Carr books you need to the first one is the terminal list
@@chrisscheuer7955 Great author. I had the honor of meeting him during a book signing for True Believer here in SD. Andy from HFB was also there. Actually just finished reading Devils Hand.
Wow that is awesome I can't wait for the show to come out at the end of the year or whenever it does and see all this gear used to full effect keep up the good work with the videos
Send it back and demand it be re-ground, (made symmetrical), or that they give you a brand new blade. Their company’s reputation is on the line here, so test their customer service and warranty coverage. It couldn’t hurt right?
That's what I was trying to do but my email must have gotten lost. I've seen it happen for companies I've worked for so giving them the benefit of the doubt. I no longer have this blade.
It's not a chisel grind so someone very inexperienced ground this. Sucks there were a couple toor knives I was looking at. Very through together knives. Not that custom, made from pre cut stock.
3 min into your vid… I stopped. I see your examples of narrow etc. don’t agree on your only using the knife to cut rope… Here’s what you should do. Write a letter, return the knife ask for another- which I’m certain they’ll make it right or Completely step away from TOOR… the knife will do it’s job plus. Not defendingTOOR… but, appears you might be that customer WHO SPENDS $200-300 on a blade and complains …. Compared to many other brands out there… I’ve seen this before. But I probably have 40 years plus on you age wise. I own and have owned many many high dollar knives - this is a production knife. It is what it is. It’s not a CUSTOM!
Custom would lean more towards forged knives. Toor uses cnc machines but they are a smaller company producing the same knives over and over. They got bigger and they have to do drops because they sell out, there’s not many knife companies anymore that didn’t start getting knives made in china. If you want custom I’d refer you to “Grizzly forge”
Baton logs with a fighter shank? Dude, baton logs with a Becker or Grayman Megapounder. But, yah I just learned about these toor knives today and went to the site and I was more appalled at the price point of these tiny knives then the American colonists were of the taxes on tea leaves in 1773!!
No, sold it to a local guy who I told why I was selling it, even showed him this video. He said it was wrong blah blah and paid full price for it. Some time passed and he texted me demanding his money back bc the tip broke. No idea what he was using it for or for how long. Told him it wasn't my problem anymore.
Oh. It's a semi-chisel grind.🤣🤣🤣🤣 Pretty sad really. Unfortunate that a U.S.A. made Knife company is having this many QC issues. Especially at that price point. Alotta other videos are having issues with the "Merchant" folder. Love love love that Winkler though. Now that's a knife.😍🥰
Funny I bought an HTM, Randall King designed tactical fixed blade used and it has similar issues with the blade grind being uneven. Its design reminds me alot of the Toor designs. The handle scales are perfect but they are perminantly bonded. Yours looks awful. I lost interest in the knife design though and now prefer more utilitarian designs with much larger and ergonomic handles. I find the more tactical oriented are more about appearances than practicality. Different strokes. Reminds me of another knife I impulse bought early in my knife hobby when I knew nothing, some Tops with a sub 5" blade, saber ground and 1/4" thick stock. WTF was I thinking? I had zero understanding of blade geometry, it was such a crap cutting blade but at least I sold it to another person at the same stage of their knife journey, new to the military. Actually, it might be usefull for that use wheere its being more a pry bar.
found this randomly and just thought for some insight to the industry from a collector perspective. you should not compare a small time company vs a big production one like ZT. zero tolerance is much larger and more well established than toor is as well as having much longer a history. semi custom and more expensive does not mean that things are higher quality or more perfect it means that there is a more human element in the making of it vs the "perfection" of a high end production knife like zt, we, reate etc. and when you are talking about semi customs vs production its important to know that to match the quality of a semi custom to a production you are going to pay FAR more than a toor. it is usually in the 700-1000 range they get close. I'm not saying toor doesn't need to work on their qc but you also need to dispose of the idea that price = better especially when in the custom and semi custom space.
Whhaaaaa thaaaa Faaaaaaaak? Wow and I literally was just about to drop 380 on the new shadow variant…. I was already really feeling that at that price the justification was barely there to buy it in the first place…but now…..Ahhh no.
People who look at blades care for optics, people who use knives can care less about blade grinds and other small annoyances As they will work themselves out during repeated use
@@taramoon9307 if you get a knife with a sloppy grind, start carving some logs, after an hour, the knife will be broken in and you'll forget all about the collector's aesthetics
I'm really curious if I just got a one off or if others who purchased this model have the same issues. Shame bc I really wanted to get the Haley strategic darter that is also made by Toor.
