A ton of awesome movies. After Hours, Duel, Inland Empire, Serpico, and Thelma Louise are all amazing. You got yourself a subscriber just for including Inland Empire 👍
Arya, glad you found the channel and welcome to this community of film lovers on RU-vid! Inland Empire on Criterion blu-ray was one of my favorite releases of 2023. Really enjoyed that film.
Just looked everywhere for 'the last house on the left' in Australia but can't find it, going to have to order it in from the US now after your review... Great vid
All 10 of your top 10 are indeed greet films and I myself have all of those releases except Duel, which I definitely will get. I am pleased to see that it has both the original TV Version aspect ratio as well as the widescreen aspect ratio. I have the DVD which has the TV ratio and the Blu-ray which only has the widescreen ratio. Now I can replace both of those with the 4K release 😀. In addition to the Criterion release of The Servant, I have the Studio Canal 4K release. The Criterion has some extra features not found on the Studio Canal release. I have both versions of Last House on the Left and they are both creepy in their own way. Can't say one is better than the other as they are both effective 🙂. I did get the $K Criterion release of The Last Picture Show/Texasville. Picture Show is such a great film and looking forward to seeing it in 4K with it's gorgeous photography. The Texasville inclusion is a good bonus but it's nowhere near the quality of a film as Picture Show. A couple releases not included that is one of my favorites are the Arrow 4K release of The Warriors. I love that film -- awesome cult classic 😀 Also, Second Sight 4K release of Martin. George Romero says it's his favorite film that he made. I have not seen Past Lives but it looks like one I should check out. There's a big back log of films I need to check out 😀 This is a 2022 4K release from Shout Factory, but I recommend you watch The Howling if you haven't gotten around to it yet. Don't need to wait until Halloween time for it 😀
PDX, yes, Duel is highly recommended and I hope you enjoy it when you have a chance to get it. I need to check out the Howling perhaps in the New Year.
Cool video. I have most of those and all are great releases. Love Past Lives. Could easily do a top 50. Here are 5 of my favorites in no order To Live and Die in LA Kino 4k, The Maltese Falcon 4k, Carlitos Way Arrow 4k, Oppenheimer 4k, Blood and Black Lace Arrow 4k. Crazy how many there are to choose from. Good times.
I recently got TITANIC on 4K. It’s great, but the one I’m most excited for this year, is Oliver Stone’s 1991 film, “JFK.” The first time the film is released on 4K UHD, from SHOUT! Factory. “JFK,” is a masterclass in filmmaking, from the cinematography, editing, John Williams’ music, acting, etc. This word gets thrown around a lot, but in this case, I think it’s true. “JFK,” is an absolute Masterpiece.
I also have the Barbarella and Thelma & Louise releases. Both are fantastic sets. I've seen both movies, but I haven't watched these transfers yet. Hopefully, I'll get to those soon.
Great video James. You really convincing me to get Targets! Past Lives was fantastic such an amazing love story and very relatable for many people. Happy New Year and thanks for all the content you gave us in 2023. Cheers.
Hello, F V! I really enjoyed Targets. One of my favorite pickups of the year. Happy New Year to you as well and thank you for the kind words and thank you for watching as always!
There's a consistent theme to all three of my top releases from 2023 - in each case, they were in upgraded editions I really welcomed but never expected to see. Two of them were phenomenal 4K releases - the 4K editions of Days of Heaven and Blood and Black Lace. In both cases, I thought the boutique companies that released them (Criterion and Arrow) no longer had the rights to them. But I'm glad they did. The other was the recent Blu-ray release of the Canadian film, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, starring a young Richard Dreyfuss (and an incredibly young Randy Quaid in a supporting role). This was one of those films I thought would never get beyond the DVD format.
Rob, thank you for sharing some of your favorites of the year. I just might upgrade my copy of Days of Heaven in 2024 as I’ve heard good things about the new 4K. I also need to check out Blood and Black Lace. I’ve never heard of Duddy Kravitz movie but it sounds intriguing. Happy New Year!
I bought mostly old movies this year from Criterion and other sources. I bought the wonderful "Past Lives" plus many film noirs ( "Our of the Past" , "Leave Her to Heaven", "Kiss Me Deadly", "Naked Alibi" "The Lonely Place" "Pickup on South Street" "Farewell My Lovely" and more) also the Swedish film "My Life As a Dog" "Barbie " "Ikiru " " The Killing" "Dim Sum". "Past Lives" is my absolute favorite film of this year. I am eager to see "American Fiction" "The Holdovers"and "Poor Things" .
Hey James, I saw Past Lives in the theater when it came out and couldn't wait to buy it! Great film. I also enjoyed the The Wailing 4k release this year.
Hi James, I just watched a couple of your videos because I was curious about your thoughts on the BLOOD SIMPLE 4K (I liked it quite a bit but it was getting roasted on a couple forums for reasons I didn’t quite see and I wanted to make sure I didn’t need new glasses or that my setup was janky or something). Really dug your breakdown of your favorite titles from last year. Keep up the good work!
Great list James. I've seen most of those but only own one, The Servant, and it is definitely great imo. Most of the others are in my buy que, with Thelma and Louise, and After Hours nearest top. But numbers one/two/three for my next purchases are The Fugitive 4k, Godland, and The Conformist.
Glad you enjoyed my list, Pete! Yes, I enjoy all these titles and wholeheartedly recommend them all. I still need to watch my copy of Godland and pick up The Fugitive 4K sometime in the New Year.
@@20thand21stMovies I just ordered The Fugitive 4k in past hour from GRUV, my last purchase for 2023, wallet needs a rest:) Looking very forward to your review of Godland.
Love Serpico, but I'm not in love with the cover, on the other hand, Love the cover for Barbarella, but not in love with the movie. Thelma and Louise has it all - Amazing cover, amazing movie. I will get mine next month. Thanks for sharing
Hi James, great list! Incidentally, saw Past Lives yesterday. I liked it but expected more, given everyones craze for the movie. It is beautifully shot. I am watching Point Break 1991 right now with Keanu Reeves amd Patrick Swayze. Have you seen it?
Hello, Adam! Glad you enjoyed the list. Past Lives is beautifully shot for sure. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Point Break. I might pick up that 4K in the New Year.
Personally I'm not a fan of Last House on the Left, I find early Wes Craven flicks to be a bit ropey ( controversialy I find The Hills Have Eyes is pretty trashy and unintentionally funny), I way prefer Mean Streets and Del Toro's Pinocchio but as always I love watching your favorite releases and hearing your opinions/ reviews. Keep up the good work.
Hello, Daniel! I can definitely understand that The Last House on the Left is not everyone's cup of tea. I enjoyed it quite a bit though it had its cringe moments. Glad to hear you enjoy the content and appreciate you watching 😀.
