Give Glenturret 10 Peat Smoke a try. I put it up there with Ledaig 10 and Kilkerran Heavily Peated.

Great video again Matt. Really appreciate you posting so regularly and with such sound advice. I'm only just getting into peated whiskies, but I did get a bottle of Ledaig 10 a few months back and am absolutely loving it. A great gateway whisky, for those dipping their toes into peated expressions, I'd say. I'm also enjoying the ardnamurchan ad/01.21.01, which also ticks that gateway box

Thanks James, I appreciate the kind feedback. Figured I should start out strong in the first little bit of the channel, keep the posts as frequent as I can(and hope not to annoy people with how many there are 😄). That AD/01.21.01 is great, turned me into an Ardnamurchan believer. And I'm glad you're getting along well with the Ledaig 10, it's a great place to start. Cheers 🥃

It's a great value here as well between $50-$75 CAD(£30-£45ish). Love that whisky, I just think of it being more moderately peated(12-15PPM) rather than heavily peated. You don't have to twist my arm to give Benromach some love haha. Cheers friend🥃

I love that Port Askaig 100 degree proof….quite a mouthful to say it AND to drink it. It’s funny, the US bottling is 110 proof (the degree sign is an error) and the 100 degree proof bottle is actually a higher ABV. The 8 year is nothing to sneeze at either. And I ain’t gonna disagree with you on your No1. I get cheesecake on those KK heavy peat bottlings. Cheers.

A very strong list indeed. I lament not having ever seen the heavily peated version of Kilkerran in these parts because the unpeated Glengyle malt is among my absolute favourites. I'll keep my eyes peeled but won't hold my breath.. I very much agree that the more oily/industrial/'funky' peated malts are among the most complex and interesting Scotch whiskies you can find.
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast Год назад
That added complexity just takes a nice Peated whisky to that next level for me too. Hope you're able to stumble across a bottle of the KKHP in the near future, it really is great value. I hope to visit Springbank and Glengyle this year if everything lines up right! Cheers 🥃

Great video, but of course, "affordable" is a relative term. I'll pay $50-$100 US once in a while, but I'm not in a position to do that often, so my #1 would be Finlaggan Old Reserve, which costs $39 at my local liquor store in Maryland but can be found in Costco semi-rebranded for about $20. No, it's not a $100 Islay Scotch, but it's a damn nice dram for the price, and I'll drink as much of it as I can buy.
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast 8 месяцев назад
Super relative term. I have enjoyed Finlaggan in the past. Unfortunately it's more expensive in my province than a number of single malts. Their are 4 Finlaggan's available but the cheapest is $92 Canadian. Brutal. But for $20 I don't know if that could be beat! Cheers Frank 🥃

When watching top 10 whisky videos, I usually disagree in the selections or the order of which the bottles are ranked. However, I found myself nodding along and I'm not sure I'd do it much differently. The Kilkerran HP4 was a bottle I really struggled with, but as I got down to the last 1/4 it really came alive with thick milk chocolate/Crunchie bar notes and found myself savouring it as I came to the end. Batches 5-7 are in the queue and am really looking forward to seeing how the range is progressing. The top bottle for me (given your criteria) at the moment would easily be Benromach Peat Smoke Sherry. I have the older bottling from 2018 (59.9%), but the newer one at 46% is supremely balanced. Honourable mention goes to Compass Box Peat Monster; for $69 you can't go wrong. By all means go ahead and make a video of your suspected number 1 bottles as you mentioned near the end of the video if you can find the time! 👍

Glad we could find so much common ground on this list. I take that as very high praise coming from you, so thank you for the comment! I'd be lying if I didn't say I am a wee bit envious of that KK HP lineup you have waiting on deck. I really need to set the money aside and stop chasing shiny objects that distract me from that Benromach Peat Smoke Sherry, never heard a bad thing about it, only praise and accolades. CB Peat Monster got much consideration, as I have a particular fondness for the old brown label blend that relied fairly heavily on Laphroiag and Ardmore. It really only just missed out. I feel like it has the opportunity to hold its price point and make its way onto the list as others price themselves out of contention. Cheers 🥃

10 is a big list for under $100. I just got KK batch 6 for $109USD. In north America I expected it to be a luxury price. Ardbeg10 is King, btw. Just want to go on the record saying that. It's ok to trash talk it but something big would have to change for it to give up the 46% NCF age stated affordable peat crown. As an alternative, I think Benromach Peat Smoke is a great Islay alternative. It's not a highland simulation, it's a big strong peat monster probably from Port Ellen also. Though the Contrast does sound good too. Hunting for it. Ancnoc and Glenglassough are good with peat also.
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast Год назад
I'd buy the KK HP at that price, so it's nice that it wasn't inflated too much. My understanding is that the Springbank importers in the Western U.S. have a tendency to crank up the prices. You are on the record Jack, Ardbeg 10 is King! I love that whisky, and they would be wise not to mess with its winning formula in the future(why would they?). It did come out on top in my Blind Islay showdown so it certainly is a great whisky. Your suggestions have been added to the scouting report, in particular the Benromach because I love them so much, and the Glenglassaugh as they were off of my peated whisky radar. Cheers 🥃

Where do you usually get your bottles? Alberta? BC pricing is so much higher.
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast Год назад
It is a bit discouraging how much cheaper Alberta tends to be. But I buy from a mixture of B.C. and Alberta as I live in the Fraser Valley. On this list it was 5 from B.C., 5 from Alberta. You do have to work harder in B.C. to find reasonable prices though. If you are able to have someone deliver from Alberta that is best. I saw the Kilchoman Sanaig for $90 in B.C. this weekend, my last bottle of Ledaig 10 was $67(its $75 right now but goes on sale at least twice a year here) and my last bottle of Ardbeg 10 was purchased in the fall in Chilliwack for $72(not counting on finding that again). My bottle of Laphroaig 10 Sherry Oak Finish was $90 but I should have kept in mind that bottle has crept up in price. Wee Beastie can still be had in B.C. from private stores in the mid to low $60's. Still, tough sledding. Hope you find some deals out there Atkinson's! Good luck, and cheers 🥃

So the Ardbeg and Port Charlette don't have the medicinal / iodine note?
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast Месяц назад
I think all whiskies that use Islay Peat have that medicinal/Iodine note, just to different varying degrees. When I think about the differences between them it's about degrees of seperation. When I think of medicinal/iodine I think firstly of Laphroaig. Ardbeg has that note, but I often find it goes more along the lines of tar/creosote heavy smoke notes(along with lemon citrus, vanilla, ect if it's the 10 year we're talkign about.). The Port Charlotte/Octomore's I find are a more woodsmoke, campfire sort of peat, which to me makes sense since they use mainland peat that is very different than Islay peat. Hope this helps!
