Not trying to be funny but Detlef and Kemp were the best combo on that whole game (seriously) - once Detlef caught fire 🔥 it was over - you would not believe how many ass whippings I passed out as a kid around the age of 12 playing that game with Kemp and Detlef - Payton was bad but Detlef would light it up from anywhere on the court when he got hot - and was not 2 or 3 shot while on 🔥 - he would stay on 🔥 for 5 or 6 shot at a time - you would almost think the 🔥 cheat code was on (facts) - and I am a die hard 1990s BULLS fan but I always picked KEMP AND DETLEF every time

Exactly. I loved everything about this team. Collabro made it just that much more entertaining. I was at some of these games. Easily one of the greatest squads to never win a championship. Had the competition not been arguably the greatest team of all time, they would have certainly gotten a ring in 1996.

@@cameronfuller8585 she's correct dawg, from 1984-1993 the NBA was at its peak, it got too defensive after that culminating with the late 90s and early 00s which was a super low scoring era, very defensive bogged down era, because everybody was playing hero ball trying to be like MJ but they couldn't because MJ was efficient and proficient unlike Kobe,T Mac, AI, Marbury, Francis, Carter, etc, who were volume shooters.

Tough call between 80s and 90s. I watched both eras, and I think I slightly prefer the 90s just for the level of competitiveness across the whole league, but the 80s is when the game changed to more fast-breaks and dunks.

I so would love to see the sonics be a team again. I was pissed when they disenfranchised them and the thunder replaced the sonics. Kemp and payton made the sonics that team that were championship contenders. Miss those two and the sonics.

Loved the sonics, kemp and Payton were the engine, think they should of got Hawkins a year or 2 earlier same with detlef, Kendal Gill was a miss, big Sam Perkins could hit from anywhere, Nate was the team general well co general. Those were the main guys to the team...was shitty when they traded kemp if he stayed they would of had a title or 2. Was sad when they moved the team to okc, Seattle needs another team

Without comparing to today's players, this is out of question one of the duos from which today's duos take inspiration from! They were one of the very first dynamic duos who could really put on a show! I grew up and I still am a Bulls fan and I think MJ and Pip are maybe the most effective duo from the 90s (points, assist, offence and defence effectiveness!), but with this two on the court, was a real show time! Maybe not as much assists and points as Jordan-Pippen or Malone-Stockton, but damn they were great!

kemp was amazing. i have never seen a physical specimen like him at the pf position. He had everything needed to be the greatest of all time athleticism, power, size, showmanship, and a perfect partner in gary payton. if only he could have focused on basketball instead of ruining his career with women and drugs. The only pfs with his athleticism were stoudemire and griffin but they didn't have kemp's legit 6'10 size.

Although David Robinson catching alley oops from AJ & Vinny Del Negro in San Antonio was really nice too, during this same era. Admiral was more graceful but less flamboyant with it than Rain Man, but both finished strong.

+Zachary T LOl. Kemp was certainly not soft. Look at the dudes Kemp had to play against every night. Karl Malone. Charles Barkley. He had a great mid-range jumper and could run the floor with the rock like a point forward. He never had to score a lot, just did what his team needed. If you watch the finals against Chicago, you will see just how good he was at his peak.

This was when the NBA was all that mattered. I was born in 84 so when I was watching Kemp and the NBA my friends and I were like 10-11 years old. The NBA was EVERYTHING back then. I hope it gets back to that. Kids loved the NBA when I grew up.

People keep talking about Kemp vs. Blake. It's not even close IMO. Blake dunks with all power and no finesse. Kemp could do both. He dunked with the style of a 6'10" Jordan. Griffin is like a 6'10" Nique, but with none of the style.

Hope this man gets his much deserved credit soon. Bring back NBA to Seattle so that we can respectfully honor SHAWN KEMP and our Sonics history! I'd like to see a Gary Payton to Kemp alley-oop bronze statue in front of our new NBA arena. I've been watching the Sonics since the mid 70's and NO disrespect to the finals and championship teams but this duo was arguably the most exciting to watch. Good Golly, Miss Molly...those were great times and my man Kevin Calabro calling those games. He's still the best!

#3 is awesome. Gets the block/rebound runs the court like a guard, then gets the lob from Gary and hammers it home. Just a beast. Haven't seen Blake Griffin do that yet. Several videos out there of Kemp going coast to coast. Just an awesome combination of athleticism, speed, and power for a man his size.

Payton would destroy Westbrook and lock him down since he locked down way better PGs than him like KJ and Stockton and even at 35 years old when he shut down Tony Parker in 2004 WCSF Kemp would destroy OKC soft frontline. 96 Sonics would kill these weak OKC in 5 games easily. only 2000s teams that would beat 96 Sonics is 2000-02 Lakers and 2008 Celtics

This doesn’t get mentioned often but Kevin Calabro was the perfect play by play commentator for Shawn Kemp. Calabro’s commentary goes with Kemp’s highlights like bread and butter. Watching those plays wouldn’t be the same without his commentary. This dude is underrated as a sports commentator.

Payton / Kemp and those SuperSonics were some of the best and most entertaining teams in NBA history. Those ally oops to Kemp were video game like. Payton would throw ally oops from half court on a dime. Payton threw ally oops better than most people can even shoot a basketball. Kemp literally caught everything from everywhere and smashed on fools with some of the most nasty entertaining antics ever. Those two should be in the Hall of Fame side by side. I think they were one of the best NBA combos in history. The original lob city. AKA The Sonic Boom.
