One you missed is a two wheel scooter like the Razor. They're simple, durable, compact, and you can get a gas or electric version for a few hundred instead of a few thousand dollars. They can also be easily modified to have a seat like a velocipede. I keep a folded up one in the back of my truck in case of breakdowns on rural roads. I would rather spend 20 minutes looking a little silly on it than 2 hours walking.

Your best form of transportation are your own two feet. Speed will eventually get you into trouble even if you are using it to get out of trouble. Slow and steady, stealth, move like a recon mission every day, it's the only way.

Motorcycle is the best, you can go slow and quiet or fast to maneuver through traffic and obstacles.

For bicycles I highly recommend never flats. They are a hard foam rubber insert that is installed in place of an air inner tube..

My parent's old vw golf was able to use vegetable oil to a certain degree without any modifications. Sometimes vegetable oil on sale was cheaper then diesel so they would mix it in. We never had any engine problems with it.

Horses are a "POOR EFFICIENCY machine" when running on only grass. You NEED grain to keep a "working horse" healthy and in optimum shape. Cows and Bison are much easier to provide for than a horse (which cannot even eat moldy hay without digestive issue). A cow-drawn cart can carry a MUCH HEAVIER load than a horse can. Oxen make the best hauling beasts having the advantages of a horse (easily trained) with a cow (powerful and easily maintained). Goats can also be an effective method of drawing a cart. They are even easier to care for than oxen/cows are. Dogs require meat but can haul larger loads than you would think. They can also be used for protection and hunting.

To be honest a boat. I have a 40' sailboat. Diesel aux power too. The pacific coast of Canada is extremely remote and finding remote anchorages with great fishing is quite easy. Also gives us time to build a bug out location as needed. We have 87 gallons of diesel in our fuel tank.. a diesel heater that uses roughly 1L a hour to heat the boat.. do cooking on shore and only move when wind allows or use diesel if we have to.. also gives us the ability to not only skip the country, but skip the continent as well.. odds are the entire world wont be in chaos.. so go somewhere that is still stable.

Train Engines are Diesel Electric, They carry hundreds of gallons of Diesel fuel. Good source of Diesel fuel in SHTF.

Dog sled and dog cart. Train them to pull, defend, and hunt. Companionship, transportation, protection, food, and even clothes if they died. Breed and trade them.

As flying vehicles i would choose paramotor over the balloon. Its a lot cheaper, takes less space to store/ transport, you can fly using thermals, and it can be electric if gasoline is scarce.

A couple of comments. 1. When I was much younger (about 45 years ago) I was planning a long trek (backcountry hike/travel) of about 950 miles. I realized I could not carry enough consumables, even considering periodic deviations to "civilization" fo resupply. Talking with a forest ranger and very experienced backwoodsman I met in Wyoming or Montana, we discussed various modes of transporting additional gear for such extended nomadic excursions. I had considered horses and mules, both for riding and transporting food, camp gear, etc. He suggested donkeys (burros). He pointed out they can carry up to 150 pounds each, and they are like dogs: where a horse will wander off, buffos will not and tend to like hanging out with you. Domestic horses also require more medical care, just like humans, so look for "mountain horses" raised in cold, harsh climate of the mountains. 2. Hovercraft are another option too often overlooked. Look at the options at Universal Hovercraft (www.hovercraft.com), the Hoverwing being the most impressive and my favorite. Hovercraft traverse water, land, ice and snow, mud, sand, etc. Most ride a few inches above the ground, limiting their utility, but the Hoverwing model uses ground effect with a pair of stubby canvas covered "wings", allowing it to hop over obstacles and "fly" for short distances. The ground effect does not allow for true flight, and the higher it goes, the less stable it becomes. However, this makes it a true all terrain vehicle, and I would take it in many scenarios over a traditional 4-wheel ATV, except for the lack of sudden stop brakes. The Hoverwing model had two fans, one for downward thrust and a larger one for forward thrust. With a "hop" height in excess of 10 feet (better than 3 meters) this vehicle can clear downed trees or even roadblocks at speed. Top cruising speed is around 60 mph with a range of 160 miles (unless fitted with a larger gas tank). Payload capacity, including fuel, passengers and gear, was close to 500 or 600 pounds after subtracting the vehicle weight of around 800 pounds. You are not moving these around by hand unless on a trailer or dolly. (Flatbed trailer behind my bugout vehicle was always my vision.) Check their website for accurate details, as I am writing this from memory. In an interview their chief designer, a retired aeronautical engineer, would not say the maximum altitude this vehicle could achieve, mainly because anything over 10 feet requires registration as a light sport aircraft. Other articles I read estimated 10 to 30 feet as easily achievable for short hops, and 50 feet a possibility, but it would be VERY unstable beyond 20 or 30 feet. Ground effect is meant to operate near the ground. This is NOT an aircraft. Drive it off a cliff and it is as aerodynamic as a brick. But as an ATV it excels for many scenarios. The Universal website looks like they have reduced their offerings since the last time I looked, but at least they still offer kits and plans.

My opinion is the mountain bikes that me and the wife have. We have one cart to hook to the back. I also have 3 spare chains, 6 tubes and 4 spare tires and an extra bike i bought used very cheap for spare parts. Yes i know it takes calories but so does every other option out there other than motorized and after the fuel is gone they are useless. I also am not mechanic savy and i can admit it to myself that that is a handicap of mine so for those reasons mountain bikes are my choice.

As for a bike.....I have two and of course I could ride them. But as far as transporting goods I'd do what the Viet Cong did during that war with the US. I'd load it down with some home made saddle bags and push it. One hand on the back of the seat, to move it along, and the other hand on a stick/bar attached to the handle bar on the side of the bike I'm walking to steer it. Plus you could carry a pack on you're back also.

Bike or e bike seems the way to go. Like you said. Quiet relatively slow but cheap or free to run. If you're bugging out in a survival situation you don't want tons of gear anyway. Fun video!

I'd say a diesel-powered 4WD camper converted VW combi van. On your way to the place where you can keep horses or donkeys. If you're not an experienced horse rider go for donkeys and carts. They are easier to keep than horses, eat less and are safer to handle. They can also help defend flocks of other animals (donkeys can kill wolves or large dogs if they need to, and keeping a few donkeys with flocks of sheep is a well-known wolf deterrent in mountain areas). They are also probably the cuddliest way of transport. You mention hot-air balloons, which shows that you're not serious. One, in the 1800s there were no hot-air balloons, there were only gas balloons. Attached to the ground by long cables these made good observation points on a battlefield, until weapons were invented that could shoot them down. Modern hot-air balloons were re-invented in the 1960s when propane and lightweight nylon came available. Great fun to fly (I should know, I've been doing it for more than 30 years), but as they drift with the wind when flying free, they are not a practical means of transport from A to B. At best a balloon might be able to get you out of A over an otherwise impossible obstacle (say a major river, or famously in the Cold War, the Iron Curtain between East and West Germany), but once landed after one or two hours of flight you will generally not have gotten very far and you must abandon the balloon - absent a way to refuel and reinflate it you will at best have the burners for cooking food for a while using the pilot flames, with the few litres of fuel left, while camping out next to the balloon. The nylon envelope might make good shelter material... Anyway, not very practical - you can't take a lot of luggage either - maybe a decent rucksack for each person on board, that's it. After the 20 to 40 km flight you will be forced to continue on foot.

Horses are definitely complex, and an uninitiated person would probably not be able to properly care for them

Lately I've been looking at possibly using my diesel tractor as a BOV. I've been running it on home heating oil so any house or business using oil heat is a potential fuel source. The bucket loader and backhoe give me plenty of space to store my gear. They are probably the oldest form of off-road vehicle. They have very good road clearing and road making abilities. The only drawback is that they aren't exactly the fastest vehicles on the road.

An overlooked "diesel fuel" source during a permanent SHTF event is abandoned jet aircraft. Some airliners have a fuel capacity of several thousand gallons.

A good 4 stroke dirtbike is the best. I rode a XR650L for years that has large ammo boxes and fuel tank, you can carry a suprising amount of weight. It can go anywhere, fences are just an inconvenience and dont even need a road or trail. With the proper tubes and slime Ive never had a flat, and thats ridding in a Mesquite desert covered in thorns. Its sneeky and fast, only a helicopter or plane can keep up offroad

Your own two feet works best and knowing how to be quiet & unseen.

A good pair of hiking boots and a large capacity external frame backpack. Way more versatile than an internal frame pack.

my bug out vehicle is a trike (bike with 3 wheels) is silent, light, perfectly stable, anyone can drive it, and it has a big basket on the rear you can carry water tank and BOB, a wool cover and a tent

Great video. My own plan, is to get an adult tricycle, and put an E motor kit (or gas motor kit) on it. Why a trike? Because if (when) you get tired old or injured, the bike will hold you up and not fall over. It's not fast, nor very manueverable, but it can carry groceries (etc) back and forth and you can still pull a trailer behind it.

Great video, but the way i see it when SHTF, you are left with the last resort a walking cart, and I say that because there wont be no gas, electricity, food, oil or nothing...that is just my take, going back to basics....

You left out a massive issue with any motorized vehicle Having worked in the oil patch for several years, I can tell you that if you don't have 10 ply tires....get used to walking Small tires are easy enough to remount ( bike tires , maybe motorcycle but I haven't tried it myself so I'm not sure ) But any car,truck or medium/large tire vehicle....4 ply tires are going to last days at the most And as soon as you don't have clean flat paved roads....they might only last hours I've helped many many people who take there regular 4 ply's onto a decent looking gravel road only to have double blow outs in the first 5 km's

My personal choice tho in this case would be my chevrolegs. I have a family. I will protect them. Martial law will be worse case scenario imho.

My post collapse preferred method of transport will definitely be my mountain bike. For one thing I have a practically indestructible lock for it. It doesn't require fuel. It's relatively silent. It can get you in and out of small spaces. You can add a carrier to it. It's easy to conceal.

What about the most used method in all history - the horse? Coupled with a cart/wagon, it is reliable, strong and can pull huge loads! For relatively short periods it can survive (like a human) on relatively little food beyond what it can forage (provided it can get water!). I read a very good article about pre-prepping a remote location, so that when you get there, the heavy construction has been done up front (eg building foundation, fireplace with chimney, etc), so that when you arrive, construction can get under way asap. Modern materials will also help considerable (eg polycarbonate roofing sheets are extremely light, strong and indestructible, and some extra tools indispensable, block & tackle, splitting wedges, felling axes, saws, etc).

Bikes are the best. Because they are light weight. U can carry it over the obstacles. hide it or carry it indoor protected areas. On the other hand e-Bikes catches 2 many eyes in grid down. ebike mule is $4300 = 70-80 (2 hand bikes).

Did 180 miles in Japan last year with a non electric kick scooter Xootr and 40 pounds of gear, tent, sleeping bag etc. Great for train travel.

This has happened to me to a lesser extent. Ten years ago or so, the gas stations were running out of gas, and it was over $5 a gallon. I had a small 2 stroke scooter that folded up like a go-ped. I was able to get around where ever I needed to go quite efficiently.

One type of transport that has been around for thousands of years is the Chinese wheelbarrow. It's one large wheel, of wood, about 4 feet or so in diameter with an axle in the middle. Handles on BOTH ends and a platform over the top and down each side. It can easily carry several hundred pounds, even small people (kids or infirm), When full it needs two people to handle it, one on each end. Lightly loaded, maybe onlty one person to handle it. It was originally designed to allow it to follow narrow, single track paths (long before carts and two track paths like those used for cars. It can follow a single track only about 3 inches wide.

Being a truck driver you could travel approximately 1000 to 1,500 miles on two full tanks hopefully to get you to the location you want to be at and pulling a trailer with all your supplies and everything you need and it can be a small storage container. With the older models and a good bumper guard you could pretty much shove any stalled Vehicles out of your way. And you can keep as many as four people in the truck, with two beds and a small refrigerator . They are a little difficult to learn how to drive but can be easily taught to someone. I'll stick to my truck pulling a small container. To get to my Bug out location.

My preferred post grid down is, 3 wheeled motorcycle 2 on the back 1 on the front. The reason for this is you get trunk spaces already built in and you can attach bags on the front part as well as you can where a backpack and you can tow a trailer or a RV. you can be more movable (for lack of a better word)

We will use horses or mules and wagon/buggies, once we run out of gas, they can also plow the gardens and fields for us, and many other things, ... we had considered wood, even downloaded and printed the old plans... but to run my generator, not our truck... we also have rivers to travel on, but like you said, that's for downstream unless you have sails or motor to get back upstream.... I know I'm 2 years late. But I'm going to have this set up in the foreseeable future. Camo colored Cybertruck with extra solar panels, an electric/manual bike, blow up boat with a canopy, and snow shoes. I'll also be using this set up to camp, and have a blast before the SHTF scenario. Good video.

I used to have a 1981 Bronco. That thing would go just about anywhere, including through water so deep that I had to roll up my side window to keep the water out. The engine was carbureted, so it could burn alcohol if you installed jets that were 40% larger. I still regret getting rid of it and I'm currently looking for another. As for electric offroad, there is a company called DayMak that sells e-bikes, e-motorcycles and e-quads. They also sell solar panel recharging systems that you can unfold and plug into when you're parked. I'm thinking about buying one next year.

Excellent video! We have a diesel powered Subaru Outback, and electric fatbikes. The diesel burner because diesel is cheap, lasts longer, and biodiesel can be diy-ed at home. The electric fatbikes are all about portability, mobility, rapid deployment, ... They are simple to solar charge, and have ~100km range when augmenting our own peddling. Even when pulling our cargo trailers. Again great video and topic.

My Emergency vehicles are a 1978 moped, or a bicycle I rigged with a gas engine. My bike with the motor uses a jackshaft to use the bike's gears as a transmission so I also get much more speed than you might normally get. I added a spare fuel tank so I also have more range. I set up a trailer so I can haul cargo as well. It's light, fairly quiet and jackrabbit fast and can go places a lot of vehicles can't go.

Reminds me of my first street bike when I was 16! I had a Honda rebel 250, pretty nimble, SUPER cheap on insurance, it got like 100 miles to a gallon of gas! Top speed was only 85 mph, but I used to do it almost everywhere I went, lol. One of those with a set of knobby tires, it would go just about anywhere you wanted to, even with bald street tires, I used to take it MILES into the State gamelands!

Fiction but a neat book to read is Escape From Sonora. A driver uses a few different types of fuel to escape. Even the acetyline from the old fashioned headlamps. One of those hunting e-bikes has a trailer that can be pulled by hand. Very versatile.

A few days ago I saw a man riding an ATV stripped down to the frame, being pulled by a dog sleigh team. I think that is the ultimate vehicle

Suggestion: I would avoid any train tracks and also highways if at all possible. The reason for this is simple, everyone knows them. They are useful landmarks. Marauders *WILL* set up ambush points along them, and you risk getting attacked and stolen from or killed (or taken as a slave) because no matter how Rambo you think you are...you are not likely to win against a group of armed meatbags unless you also have a group of trained and armed meatbags yourself. Other places of note to avoid would be malls, hospitals, sporting goods stores, supermarkets and known warehouse depositories. Those are going to be taken over by some group or another (or you could take them over if you have a group) but if that is not part of your plan you are better off avoiding them. If you aren't prepared enough to last at least a year (barring unforeseen circumstances) then that should be your first order of business. The best choice, if at all possible, is to hunker down and wait for the massive die-off. After a year it is likely that SOME form of order will be restored, depending on the nature of the crisis, and you can then decide how you wish to interact with that form of order.

The larger breeds of goats can be used to pull small carts or as pack animals. They can thrive on brush found in the woods & on much less food than a horse. (Also edible.) Electric golf carts are another option you might want to consider. A used one can be found cheaper than even an e-bike & they have much greater hauling potential.

Realistically, most people would have or have access to multiple modes of transportation even if SHTF so like a car would be good if you really have to travel a good distance, otherwise conserve it and use a bicycle or canoe or some other non costly mode of transport around your area. This video was fantastic!

If you live in a beautiful place (40 acres or so) with off-grid house Solar power, well, etc. Why worry just load your guns and watch out for the a-holes.

Tell us a good report because so many times nobody shows like yours wants to bring up things like bicycles and stuff like a canoe with outriggers and sales so that is good because I've covered bicycle so many times a pickup truck world versatility is just so great on them but you have bicycle with the trailer I'm looking into it keep up the good working God bless

have a 1979 Jeep J20 1 ton pickup. It has been converted to only run on propane, currently holds 60 gallons of lp but I can pickup one of my 500 gallon propane tanks on the delivery trailer to transfer to motor fuel as I travel.

I got a Honda Trail 70 rigged up to pull a wagon it has points ...Soo it can go no matter what

I've just bought a bike which I'm very happy with. It was much more expensive than I expected, and it was very hard to find anything at all in stock here in the UK where there is currently a bike shortage. The shops said its because of everyone buying bikes in lockdowns to travel and exercise (due to closed gyms and police stopping cars) and also due to lockdowns in Asia affecting bike factories. The shops here have hundreds of thousands of bikes on order that they are waiting for.
