What “Barbie” Easter eggs did YOU catch? Let us know below, and check out our video of the Top 10 Behind the Scenes Facts About the Barbie Movie - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X2o-TJ1AQpY.html
I didn't catch it, so much as blinked and missed it. The Barbie Mt Rushmore. I only recognised one Barbie, the first. I'm having trouble finding a still of that shot online.
The Barbie movie didn’t mention the doll that Barbie is based on. The German doll Lilli. I wish they would’ve included something about her, get into the roots
Matchbox 20’s ‘Push’ was, to me, a great Easter egg and the perfect song for Ken. The song itself is about the abuser being a woman, not a man. But in Ken’s world, it just goes right over his head, taking the words at face value and propping up his newfound “patriarchal” system. It was also notorious for being one of the most played and obnoxious songs of the 90s.
This is true- at least in my case growing up no one wanted a Ken doll - as a little girl getting a Ken was equivalent to getting socks as a gift. I never had any Ken or male Barbies or the knock off Kens unless it was a set deal like buying Barbie Princess of Swan Lake WITH Prince Daniel etc. I thought they were pointless. Having one Ken was more than enough to pretend with even if I didn’t change his clothes. I had no idea what they were for besides being her boyfriend. I normally left him in the box cause I didn’t think it was fair Barbie had a boyfriend but my other Barbies didn’t. I didn’t want them being jealous.
Fun fact: The nature of Barbie and Ken's relationship has never been canonized by Mattel. Maybe they are or maybe they aren't "long-term, long-distance, casual, low-commitment boyfriend/girlfriend."
@@user-kb8qw7dy4t True! Like Ruth said in the movie, she never planned an ending for Barbie. Whether or not Barbie and Ken (or Blaine for that matter) went beyond a friendship was all up the child's imagination.
@@ayf1983 No it's was when Barbie went to real world and understand looking around that not everyone is happy. She looked at Old lady and said You are beautiful and she replied "I know I am"
What I love about Greta is that all of the actors in her films seem to really love her and enjoy working for her. It seems like a great and fun working environment. Love that
@@trinaqyes and more people should respect that acknowledgement. Too often, so many see it as being conceited or presumptuous but that's not always the case.
@@rahbeeuh True, I loved how they poked fun of the undeniably gorgeous Margot Robbie claiming that she wasn't beautiful. That got a huge chuckle from my cinema!
I think that's what people are missing. Greta didn't create one barbie in the movie. All the Barbies were reference to actual Barbies, include the one that grew breasts. Almost everything in the movie is a reference to something Mattel did. This movie is as well (maybe even better) researched to the biopic Openheimer.
Saw both and couldn't agree more. Personally I enjoyed Oppenheimer and the actors were great but felt the directing, script, fell short of its hype. Whereas with Barbie everything was better researched, directed.
I saw the move the other day, totally loved it! I was especially fond of it's sense for meta humour and self awareness. I was NOT expecting Mattel themselves to have a role in it! And Will Ferell as it's fictional CEO truly delivered! 😂
Really loved how throughout the movie shows the importance of uniqueness, self-love and acceptance. While I wished they focused a bit more on the real world, if they can put out powerful messages is something they will make me teary-eyed in happiness every time and I thank them for this!!! 🥹😊🙂
If I had a nickel for ever time Will Ferrell played a businessman antagonist in movies based on toy lines... I'd have two nickels which isnt a lot, but its world that it happened twice.
The pink stage location where the Kens danced in all black is an ode to Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse in the 1952 "The Broadway Melody Ballet" from Singin' in the Rain. Gene Kelly was wearing all black.
One Barbie they forgot to put in the movie was Butterfly Art Barbie. I bought it in 1998. It had tattoos and it came with temporary tattoos you can wear. it was referred to as "Tramp Stamp Barbie" and was pulled off of shelves quickly.
I received this Barbie as a birthday gift when I was around 6 or 7! I can't believe my mom let me keep it 😂 The doll clearly had no influence on me as I'm a tattoo-less adult 🤣
Well, Greta Gerwig (the director) had about two hours (119 minutes, to be exact) to tell the story. Therefore, you can only do so much. Also, she probably wanted to focus on Stereotypical Barbie's relationship with the world around her and her owner (Gloria). Which is most likely why Butterfly Art Barbie wasn't seen or mentioned here. I'm a male, so, I don't know what was popular and what wasn't.
“Does that mean Allan was the baby’s father?” Yes, Allan was part of the Happy Family line, along with Midge, their son Ryan, the two babies Nikki and Cassandra (Midge was a pregnant doll twice), and a set of grandparents. It was always super funny to me that parents thought it promoted teen pregnancy when Midge was intended to be a little bit older than Barbie (I think she was supposed to be 21 and Barbie was 19?), and she had been married to Allan for a few years at that point.
@@msvalentine1902 When Allan was introduced, he was just Ken's "buddy," and the whole aesthetic was very gay. At some point much later in history, he may or may not have become the one responsible for Pregnant Midge? I was not aware of any marriage or legitimate children. Perhaps they live with Weird Barbie now.
That question in the video made me chuckle since they were showing a clip of the wedding advert! Instead of doing something as simple as turning over the box to read the story, not being able to see a wedding ring on Midge's finger on first glance caused some people to assume and lose their minds. Wal-mart took that model off the shelves. Collectors fled to Toys R Us at the time to grab one. That's how I got mine!
The nods to Grease with John Travolta. Ken laughs like him in the beginning of the film and the scene where they dance in black outfits is similar to the Grease Lightening scene.
All of the flashes in the "Ken Discovers Patriarchy" moment show up throughout the movie. I was waiting for Grease Lightning to show up, and boy did it!
Weird Barbie was originally a "Totally Hair Barbie"..when the Barbie's tell Barbie about Weird Barbie..they say she was the most beautiful Barbie ever..Totally Hair is the best selling Barbie ever.. when you see Gloria cutting her hair in the Flashback..she's got long crimped hair..and when Barbie comes back to Barbieland..Weird Barbie is wearing a jacket that has Totally Hair's signature dress pattern
I am 80 years old and although I did not pick up many easter eggs, I certainly enjoyed the film. Great music, costumes etc, wonderful ending to a good story.
I can't believe the bench scene almost got cut! That was such a beautiful moment. How they managed to get us from laughing about Ken discovering patriarchy to crying over Barbie discovering human emotions in a matter of seconds will never stop amazing me!
The "Ken's identity problem" also happened in "the real-world" Gloria's husband, Sasha's father is only called "El Esposo de Gloria" only defined by his relationship with a more focal woman. actor Ryan Piers Williams, America Fereira's real husband.
im so glad they didnt cut that scene with the woman on the bench :’) im in my late twenties, but even as a super young teen i feared the thought of getting old. bc when youre young as long as you’re relatively healthy ur not gonna die unless an accident happens. but in my mind when you’re old it can just… happen. the body can just give up. and idk, i dont wanna die so i guess thats the fear. but its also superficial. society does not treat older women kindly. so me, growing up with barbies and adoring them and i still have them, seeing that scene did something for me. instantly brought me to tears.
I felt so seen with this movie! So wonderfully done. It's not surprising that these right winger men who are taking issue with it totally missed a key point about Ken's journey to be seen, as well.
Something I thought was really cool was that in the scene when she’s choosing between the shoes, the real world option is the Birkenstock.. and then that shoe gets tied back in at the very end of the movie
I had pregnant midge lol my siblings thought it was weird and would laugh about it a lot. I honestly just thought it was cute 😅 and it was an attempt at showing curious kids in a non health class way. Lol idk I enjoyed playing with it 🤷🏻♀️
The 2001: A Space Odyssey music that was played in the beginning when it was mirroring girls discovering Barbie also played when Ken discovered patriarchy in the real world. I've seen it twice in theaters and definitely will watch it again. It's such a good film.
My mam went home after the movie to look up growing up skipper. She could vaguely remember some sort of pregnancy doll but was not sure if she believed in growing up skipper.
@MsMojo I thought { after seeing the movie today , in Australia 🇦🇺 } that , that elderly woman on the bench with Barbie ( making a cameo appearance ) was Margot Robbie's real life grandmother . Also , I disagree that Midge the pregnant 🤰 " Barbie " would be encouraging teen pregnancy as teen girls don't play with Barbie dolls . Although , yes -> Sugar daddy Ken was Creepy & a misstep 🤦
"Sí se puede" is not a phrase coined by any movie. It was first used by the first union of mostly Mexican workers in plantations in the US in 1972. It is widely used in Latin America for any communal big efforts like sports, education, unions, protest and political campaigns because it means "yes we can" signifying that the team effort will get the group the victory. That's why the daughter tells the dad that it's cultural appropriation because he's white.
🤦🤦🤦🤦 There is no way people could have "missed" the Number 1 topic on this list, unless they were asleep or didn't speak the language or had mental deficincies or something. The movie blatantly ponts out SEVERAL TIMES that the obscure discontinued Barbie brand characters were real official products. The end credits has a montage of those products too.
It was pretty fast paced - when I saw it, no one else was laughing or picking up on most of what I thought was funny- all the cultural references and pointing out blatant sexism.
@@elipotter369 People weren't laughing because the movie was boring af 😅 Ken and Allan were the only ones offering comedy since the film was too desperate to show women as smart and therefore couldn't give them jokes.
1:01 and also weird barbie was a Totally Hair 2:19 the Ken on the belt is stylized as the Metallica logo 12:20 in the defunct dolls bunch there was also Teen Talk Barbie... The one who said "math is hard" ❤
Yes, Weird Barbie was TH Barbie - for many people the most beautiful doll like also Emma Mackay´s Barbie said about Weird Barbie, she was once the most beautiful Barbie. I was sad they didn´t talk about Teen Talk Barbie at all in movie. She was just there and nobody talked about her. :O
@@lubomirholik3104 but she was still there!!! They put the garments of the Teen Talk and she was part of the rebellion so I'm here for her..... And maybe the joke was to give her no lines at all
The Midge and Alan wedding and family story is on the back of the pregnant Midge boxes. Alan was also the father of Ryan, the toddler boy doll that came in the same box for the Happy Family doll series.
I LOVED “Gotta Kick It Up” … I knew that it couldn’t be a coincidence 😄 - I am a big fan of America”s. I am a 50yr old - so I got most of the Easter Eggs. I enjoyed the movie
I'm older too, and immediately saw the Stanley Kubrick reference, and the bible creation story. But I didn't know the movie Playtime with Jacques Tati, though I do know of Tati.
Yeah but "Sí se puede" is not a phrase coined by any movies. It was first used by the first union of mostly Mexican workers in plantations in the US in 1972. It is widely used in Latin America for any communal big efforts like sports, education, unions, protest and political campaigns because it means "yes we can" signifying that the team effort will get the group the victory. @@samanthamoreno2912 I am not sure why you felt the need to talk down to us and give us a history lesson on a post about “Easter Eggs” I am 50 years old and I am not an idiot! I know what it means … and that wasn’t even the point! They only threw threw that in because of “Got to Kick It Up” where that phrase was a huge part of the plot. OF COURSE THEY DIDN’T COIN THE PHRASE 🙄 … do you think all Caucasians are complete morons?
I can’t believe there was a Sugar Daddy Ken rofl… I also noticed Will Ferrell holding pink Drumsticks during the conference scene which instantly reminded me of Step Brothers.
I just saw it this morning, and I loved it. Barbie was introduced the year before I was born, so I grew up with her. The movie brought back so many memories, especially Ken as someone you could easily just toss to the side in order to get on with the fun stuff with the other Barbies. There were also parts of the movie that nearly brought me to tears. I didn’t expect it to be so deep and moving.
You got the Si Se Puede fact wrong. The easter egg is that America Ferrera started the "She Se Puede" movement with Eva Longoria a few years back. At the end of the film when her character's husband gives encouragement to Barbie and says "She se puede", America's character jokingly says something like "be careful that's a trademarked statement". It's ironic because America Ferrera was the celebrity spokesperson for She Se Puede.
Wait, so Ben Shapiro's film analysis and critique missed some very important context and/or references? I am so Kenfused. You'd think he'd pick up on the Bible thing at least.
Defunct Barbie dolls are just fine - they only freak out certain people in our population, the same people who think the sight of certain books, people, etc. will suddenly have some magic power over their kids LOL I say bring them back!
The movie was so good i cried so much at the ending my cousin mom and brother were all dressed in pink our theater was packed and everyone was dressed up in pink we all understood the assignment
I laughed till I cried, and cried too! No one else laughed except at the cellulite and one other time - the verbal quipping, feminism and cultural references went over their heads. I wore pink and said hi to someone in pink after - she said no she hadn't seen Barbie, she wasn't going to go and see a stupid kid's movie about dolls. She didn't want to know that it was an adult movie.
So... Allen and Midge married in 1990 (I have the gift set with Ken barbie Tommy and kelly). That would make him her husband and father to their son Lol. That word "baby daddy" isn't really correct terminology. Love your show!💐
I know I had the black midge I I want to her cause she had the pink outfit. The white one had a really ugly outfit. I’m not kidding but I do remember she actually having a wedding ring like a Barbie ring on her left hand so I don’t see the point of why they had to take that doll way and don’t sell it anymore.
I don't remember seeing emotional abuse- I saw a guy who wanted a love from someone that they couldn't give becausethey didn'tfeel "in love" like he did. And he had some existential angst- which is something you have to work out within yourself.
I kinda knew about the Ken's Stallone coat one. I knew some of the nostalgic Barbie outfits and accessories. I also knew that Midge and growing-up Skipper were actual dolls.
3:16 poor doll... don't get me wrong (I have no intention to offend if any), but as a Japanese this is quite shocking and violent...we grow up told everything has a life if it is a thing (I think this reminds you of Konmari, although we do not do "that ritual" of saying thankyou to things explicitly... that ritual is her interpretation)… so this scene is a murder scene…
and so does the Bible, the dead sea scrolls found, the ark pieces found, etc. do research. evolution has missing links and p[lenty of discrepencies. i studied. both. k thanks byee@@jennifergreen6510
I know I've already commented on the different Barbies I had as a kid in the 70s and 80s, I want to say that the original airplane, camper and Penthouse were much larger and were more realistic in their color scheme than later models. Also, I had Barbie's 79 purple Corvette which came with seatbelts and 3 different 8 Track tapes. Awesome toys!👏👏👏💖💖
This is not well edited. When the narrator discusses the kinds of toy vehicles that Barbie has had, the wrong toys are shown or delayed. Please pay & train your editors better. Aren't you professionals?
I don’t understand what is ‘disturbing’ about the pregnant Midge doll tbh. Weird word to use to describe something so innocuous. Also yes Allan is the father, he and Midge were husband and wife.
After the incident in Venice beach what follows all humorously is the arrest of Barbie And Ken, showing them in the precinct holding these cards with their names on them... Notice that on Ken's stands "and Ken", not just "Ken"... It's all about this "and" or "just" that makes the difference. It's sth that caught my eye quite recently and made me appreciate the consistency in the details and the meaning that was plotted throughout the film.
10:36 this is a political statement from the farm workers since at least 1972 with Cesar Chavez. Please a simple google search could have told you that. No American F. did not invented it. She literally said is a political statement.
