Characters normally get third level spells at level 5, and it's one of the biggest power increases that spell cast or get, because of just how good pretty much all 70 of the third level spells are. So this list will be going over the 10 best of them, generally based on just how universally useful they are.

Fun Fact: There’s a background called Gruul Anarch (Guildmaster’s guild to Ravnica) that lets any caster use conjure animals, not just druids and rangers. It also allows any caster to learn a spell that only paladins get at 17th level that they can cast at 9th level. This is real

The Guilds backgrounds are banned almost all of the time simply because they are so much better than all of the other backgrounds. Strixhaven will be the same.

@@bluj1143 I think it is a cool idea to run a Strixhaven campaign, in which all characters have something to do with the school. Kind of like playing Harry Potter. Maybe you all graduated at one point in your backstory, maybe you are teachers/ work there, ... But the main problem is that they are only really useful for casters. So it limits your party a lot.

also, the ravnica background give you the option to have animate dead on a warlock (or even worse Oathbreaker 8 / Hexblade x) Animate dead + short rest slots is super, super broken RAW

Put fireball on a Scribe Wizard and it becomes the most versatile damage dealing spells since it can take the damage types from whatever other 3rd level spell types you have. So you can deal damage types like bludgeoning, necrotic, cold, lightning and thunder damage with Fireball lol

@@The_Indubitabler , I believe yusha rider is referring to twin spell. I will have to reread the rule on twin spell. I thought one could only use twin on single target spells.

In combat use for fly : cast in on the barbarian , have him grab any unfortunate being in his reach , take them as high as possible then drop them

I would make a point for animate dead. Four skeletons or zombies can be quite useful. Provided you have extra equipment, they get even better.

IMHO, haste is a pretty situational spell. At level 5, giving up both a spell slot, action, and concentration to give another player 50% more attacks is almost never worth it. Haste is still situationally worth it when the extra speed makes that martial player go from 0 attacks that turn to 3 if it allows them to close the distance. However, if you lose concentration, it's far more devastating than losing concentration on other spells, since the player you cast it on loses their next action.

@@josephdouglas5242 hast is realy one of a best spell. you don't have one more attacks, you have one more actions (with limitation). More AC, More speed. on a spell caster it's from "you can lauch one spell and be catch next turn" to "you can launch one spell, take dodge and never be caught with the same AC bonus from shield faith"

@@kjarllan7097 Agreed, I think Joseph is underestimating Haste. especially in the hands of a twinning sorcerer. Hey you 2 wreck the enemy while I stay out of harms way and keep concentration up with my proficiency in it. Then there is the cool stuff an Arcane trickster rogue can do without giving up sneak attack. And One extra attack is 33 percent more damage. That is a lot.

@@kjarllan7097 Yeah, but you’re using your concentration on haste, so the spells that you’re casting aren’t really all that fantastic. It’s nice for a martial class to have another action, but unless it’s used for maneuverability, it’s only a single extra attack

@@The_Indubitabler Again you're focus on the attack, think about defence. you can dodge or disengage, you have twice your movement and you have also +2ac in the pack. and a mage under hast can be more tanky than a warrior and still can blast some fireball.

I'm really surprised how low Spirit Guardians is listed. I think you may have misinterpreted part of the text. "...when the creature enters the area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there..." I would read "or starts it's turn there" as a second way the spell deals damage and not conditional on whether or not they entered the area or the area was brought to them. Scales better than Fireball or Lightning Bolt and if you can keep up concentration, it deals a ton of passive damage over a couple of turns.

Yes, indeed! Upcast SG to Lvl 5 or 6, go in dodging, bonus action Spiritual Weapon to smack things. Dip Sorc or Wizard to pick up SHIELD and ABSORB ELEMENTS. A bit MAD, but awesome!

Good list. Only disagreement I really have is the ordering of the top 3. Counterspell is far and away the most must-pick level 3 spell in the game. If a caster fights another caster, and one has counterspell, and the other doesn't, the one with counterspell should win virtually every single time, because he can just flat out deny the action of the other character every single turn. Heck, even if the other Caster is significantly more powerful, but doesn't have Counterspell prepared, he's still in for a rough time. Fireball is good but it can't snuff out a Wish.

How many monsters are casters though? I still feel like fireball wins more encounters, at least at level 5. Sure, I'll take counterspell as soon as I hit level 6 and probably drop fireball at around level 9, but most fights aren't against Vecna.

@@josephdouglas5242 It depends on your campaign. If you're going against Dragon Cultists or Elemental Evils you're fairly likely to run into enemy wizards every other fight. If you're dungeon crawling gobbos, it's a lot less likely 😂

I can’t believe Animal Dead isn’t on this list! Concentration-free minions who last 24 hours, great scaling with upcasting, incredible meat shields and ranged fighting, and the ability to use leftover spell slots before taking a long rest for something instead of wasting them. It’s FANTASTIC, I wish people didn’t sleep on how good it is

I like all these spells, but I'd generally flip your ranking of them! Spirit Guardians is incredible dpr, and Hypnotic Pattern can solve entire encounters immediately. Fly is fantastic utility and, in smaller parties, can also solve encounters as 3/4 of the monsters can't touch you while you're flying. Tiny Hut solves most encounters where you have time to prep in the location the fight takes place in, and keeps you from being ambushed in the night. Etc. Meanwhile, Fireball's damage is good compared to other spells, but dex is a better save than wisdom, and doesn't have control bonuses, AND you have to place it to not hit allies, which is oftentimes difficult.

Definitely would've put Haste in there myself, but a solid list. Conjure Animals is underrated I feel, but maybe that's just because I don't see enough spellcasting focused Druids.

haste kinda blows in 5e, its only really good to use on your rogue, and virtually meh on every other martial. it takes your concentration and when the spell ends the target is hit with a wave of lethargy leaving them vulnerable and unable to do anything. so if you cast haste you cant just drop concentration to use a different concentration spell on a whim.

Would probably ad Haste instead of Lightning Bolt. Good list though, much better then the level 2 one with Crown of Madness. Also if your DM is particularly sadistic with Conjure Animals it also mentions OR LOWER. So he can give you 8 mice.

Those kinds of shenanigans, and the DMs who hate conjuration in general, are why Tasha's and FIzban's give 'spirits' with fixed stat blocks. One entity instead of 8 and, though it can be a trap, the party can upcast the spell to boost the performance of the spirit.

Technically, if you shoot an arrow or bolt or throw something at a creature from inside Tiny Hut, your enemy could then pick that up and attack you back. Since it's an object that was indeed inside the dome when the spell was cast. I feel like this would make for a fun Order of the stick strip.

It's sad how Leomund's Tiny Hut and many other spells like Counterspell have been massively nerfed with the changes to npc, enemy, and creature spell casting. A bunch of things that were spells have been changed into actions that mimic a spell. So where an enemy might of had the fireball spell it's now the fiery explosion action. So you can't counterspell it and it'll pass right through Lemond's Tiny Hut. In a way this change is good because it makes the job of using spells from multiple creatures easier on the DM but horrible because it renders several spells either useless or incredibly weakened.

Leomund’s Tiny Hut correction: “creatures and objects are barred from passing through it.” “spells and other magical effects can’t extend through the dome or be cast through it.” “The atmosphere inside the space is comfortable and dry.” Can dragon’s breath pass through it? I would imagine RAI, the answer is no. RAW is.. like probably not. Is fire breath a magical effect? That’s debatable, you could say yes or no. Jeremy Crawford unofficially said no. If you say no, then is fire an object? Again, debatable….. if you say no to that as well, then we have to look at that last quote. “The atmosphere is comfortable and dry.” It mentions no scenario that would change it from being comfortable and dry, it just says that it IS comfortable and dry. This certainly implies a sort of immunity to the elements.. not to mention, if fire is flying through the hut, that would be interfering with its “comfortable and dry” atmosphere. Probably not comfortable.. so that feels like a strong implication, from this one quote and even more so with all the quotes together, that dragon’s breath would not be able to pass through LTH. It very strongly seems to be intended as pretty solidly reliable protection from any damage.. I think that’s definitely RAI and I don’t think RAW really leaves much room to try and argue that dragon’s breath can go through..

Typo for Lightning Bolt, it says 8d8 instead of 8d6. Didn't realize it was wrong at first and was surprised it was so low on the list.

conjure animals only does up to CR 2 creatures, giant constrictors are CR 2 so to summon 8 snakes you would have to upcast it to 9th lv slot twice, as its 4 times the CR a better use is to summon several small creatures, summoning 8 raptors is better than 1 snake, cause action economy

I know giant constrictor snakes are shown in the visual aid, but I do say "Giant poisonous snakes" in all the segments about Conjure animals and its also written in text as "Giant poisonous snakes" on screen. The image is simply being used from the Fly example because its kinda similar to what's being talked about, but is not meant to be taken literal.

I'd drop mass healing word, since its hopefully rare for more than on member of the party to drop at the same time. Slow has a 120' range and stops reactions, which is great if it is a caster since they can't Counterspell, and since melee people can't take attacks of opportunity. And any caster only have like a 50% chance of a spell going off that round. and the ability to exclude your allies. among the other things it does

Minor necro post, but gotta show some love for Spirit Shroud. You throw an upcasted SS on an Eldritch Blast, Scorching Ray, or even Crown of Stars and holy shit do those numbers start to pile up.

Fireball always makes me anxious because it reminds me of the time it hit my Level 1 hexblade warlock for twice their max HP. He only survived due to a racial trait, which was hype as heck, but now he has pyrophobia.

Aid I'll say is basically as good as mass healing word especially in small partys since at the same level it still beats the hp boost of the best case scenario of healing word and increases max hp

Spirit guardians deserves a higher ranking because it upcasts so well. Fireball is great when you first get it, but it doesn't stay good for many levels because it doesn't upcast well.

if you cast spirit guardians and have a druid friend cast plant growth it makes for a devastating combo as it not only quarters movement, it is also still additionally difficult terrain which means it further reduces movement by another half this means most enemies literally cannot move hypnotic pattern out of combat lacks the downside of the people you charmed becoming hostile once it ends this can be used to calm a crowd for example and actually, if a party member uses plant growth or web you can further immobilize individuals in some cases outright ending an encounter because neither plant growth or web deal damage.

Going for Fireball? Take the feat Elemental Adept as soon as you can. Ignores resistances and all rolls of 1 count as 2's, so you'll never be rolling minimal damage again!

So, on the Conjure Animals, you say that Initiative is rolled per animal, but the info card says it's rolled as a group. Which is it actually?

I got to pick my first level 3 spell lat session and I would’ve loved Hypnotic Pattern but my DM has a tendency to “fudge rolls” behind his screen when our attacks would cause the most benefit or damage

Unfortunately, that combo was errata out a couple of years ago. The official ruling is that causing damage through SG ends Sanctuary.

Personally, I value Counterspell, Revivify, and Leomund's Tiny Hut more than the spells ranked above them (because ending individual combats < not letting the villain escape or a player character die), but there's no denying that most if not all of these spells are definitive staples of D&D play.

Ditto the other comments about Haste being omitted, but I won't beat that horse; personally I'm not as big a fan of Haste, but I see why others would want it on the list. I am a bit surprised that Plant Growth didn't make the list (as it's a VERY effective control spell, zero save, and a truly immense radius with zero concentration, so great stacking with other spells like Spirit Guardians or Spike Growth), and I personally would rank Fireball lower as it rarely hits more than 2-3 targets, as you don't often see masses of guys coming at you. But on the whole solid list!

I think Hypnotic Pattern is generally better than Fireball past 3rd level. Fireball's damage scales very poorly later into the game even when upcast, whereas Hypnotic Pattern's effect never falls off as long as you keep your spell save DC high. While yes, making enemies dead is stronger than making them disabled, that's only true while you're actually killing the mobs you fireball. Once fireball is just doing some damage to the mob and not killing anything, it becomes way worse than disabling them, as enemies are just as lethal at 1 hp as they are at full hp. Sure Hypnotic is shut down by charm immunity, but I still think it's going to be somewhat rare for an entire mob of enemies to all be charm immune except in specific campaigns.

I could not agree with you more. Besides, they’re basically dead once they’re incapacitated by the spell. Have your entire party ready actions to attack once the hypnotic pattern stops affecting a creature, then do some damage with a cantrip, then all the readied attacks go off, possibly killing the target, and if it doesn’t you still have all the turns until the enemy’s turn to kill them.

@@kingdarkstalker7247 Yeah, it's so easy to dismantle an enemy force that's got half it's number completely disabled. And even against an enemy who is very intelligent and coordinated and knows to daisy chain shakes to wake up their allies, this still at minimum nullifies a ton of total actions and their turn order has to really line up really well to all reactivate in one round.

Pixies if the DM allows it. Who can then polymorph your party into great apes/ t rexes. These tend to get banned.

You cant hit at 190ft with a fireball. radius is 20ft (not 40ft as in the video) 150+20 is 170ft max. The area you hit max is from 130ft to 170ft with a radius of 20ft (diameter of 40ft) It is in the description of the spell on the left while calculated incorrectly at 18:00

Lightning Bolt should have been linked to Fireball and not occupied its own slot. Then replace Lightning Bolt with Dispel Magic, Haste, or Slow. Dispel Magic has been so consequential in certain campaigns I've both played and DM'd for. It's invaluable. Both Haste and Slow are also incredibly useful spells.

Haste is kind of overrated. Its one of those spells that feels like its more impactful than the numbers really show.

Haste is a surprisingly not broken spell. It's still a good spell, but it takes a pretty specific teammate to really maximize it's effect (namely making one additional weapon attack significantly stronger, such as with GWM or smite builds), and even then when compared to all the other concentration spells, it's overall payoff isn't that large. The one buffed ally's attack has to equal the action to cast and 3rd level spell slot used, which it usually doesn't. It takes a surprising number of rounds to actually have one extra swing per turn equal a fireball or something. Especially when counted with the risk of losing concentration. It's still a good buff, but it looks a fair bit better than it performs.

Haste is fun for silly things like giving a Bladesinger or Hexblade with shadow blade, or a martial class with a weapon like Flametongue, one more attack with which to stack up the damage. The more powerful a character’s weapon attacks, the more it adds up!.

@@EvilFuzzy9 This is definitely true. As I said, it needs some specific combo where you're getting more than just like a 1d8+str of damage out of it. Otherwise at higher levels it's just mostly worse on that turn than having cast a cantrip. Basically, as people have noticed, you have to have an ally that can do extremely good damage in about 2 hits for it to be worth using over other 3rd level spells. In a group with at least 3 people that mostly do good damage on attack rolls, Bless will often match or outpace Haste as far as added damage. And it's a cheaper spell that doesn't have a risk of feedback. Haste does give some other benefits, like the AC boost, which is great for a tank, and the dex save. But most of it's features besides the extra attack aren't that powerful for a 1 target buff.

I’d argue, that “Slow” should’ve been on that list based on how laughably easy it can make fights where you just kite enemies and they can do nothing but run up to you using their action to dash while you can attack them easily with their -2 to AC and then just move back without them being able to take reactions either.

Combat is also laughably easy when those monsters that failed the slow save instead failed the hypnotic patern save, and you're able to nuke down one at a time/have everyone hold their action to nuke down the last one. Also, kiting only works if you've got the right party members/the monsters don't have ranged attacks/the terrain allows such maneuverability. Top 10 spells need to work in many different situations very well, and I agree slow doesn't belong. Not saying slow is bad, since it's not a charm and doesn't have friendly fire, it works in some places that HP doesn't.

@@josephdouglas5242 The issue with Hypnotic Pattern is, that you can't exclude certain allies for instance. Also once you attack an enemy, it can act normal again. Which isn't to say, that Hypnotic Pattern is bad, on the contrary. Both spells heavily bring action economy in your favor, and action economy is king.

@@sanguineaurora8765 Counterspell can be cast to be a save or suck spell and it's an amazing spell. Depending on your DM, you won't know which level enemy spell casters cast certain spells on, so it's much more likely then, that you'll resort to the save or suck version anyways. Additionally, many enemies have certain stat weaknesses and are therefore less likely to succeed on the save, making save or suck spells much better vs them.

You got your math a bit wrong. A fireball can only affect creatures that are less than 170ft away. 190ft is too far. Choose a POINT that is 150ft away. THEN apply the 20-ft radius sphere centered on THAT POINT. You don't get an extra 40ft just because the diameter is 40ft. The POINT you choose is the center of the sphere. The farthest that POINT can be is 150ft away. THEN add the 20ft radius sphere.

It's really not that hard to maintain concentration ( just take the dodge action and get warcaster ). Spirit Guardians is the best lvl 3 spell, if you don't do shenanigans with Conjure Animals ofc... You can also pull enemies inside the Spirit Guardians to deal damage in the round that you cast it.

A dragon's breath weapon is considered to a magical effect (iirc), so Tiny Hut would stop it as well!

Mass healing word def wouldn't make my list. Its waaaaay too situational. If you want a healing one, aura of vitality gives you 20d6 or 70hp (avg) healing out of combat. That's same as a Heal spell, which is 6th level.

actually 190 ft is inaccurate you can only hit things within 170ft as the 150ft range applies to the central area of the fireball but still the point stands im rules lawyering on a small detail but 190 vs 170 is a huge diffrence

whole party of druids all using conjure animals (assume a party of 4-5 people) all of them summon 8 cr 1/4 creatures. assuming a party of 5 thats 40 creatures and if all of them are giant badgers not that they could realistically do so but if all the badgers attacked thats a 40d6+40 piercing and 80d4+40 slashing if max damage was rolled not including crits thats 640 damage now granted concentration requirements make this questionable but lets face it surrounding most enemys entirely in a ring of beasts is generaly speaking a bad time

Haste, presuming you have a tank/striker will almost always contribute more than Lightning Bolt or Fireball. Fireball, however, has a real niche as “battlefield artillery” against massed infantry, siege engines…it is the D&D WMD.
