My best friend and I went out to see Little Shop of Horrors. Turns out that dueting Suddenly Seymour at the top of your lungs while waiting for the train scares away everyone else on the platform.
I'm sorry but I just laughed a little too hard at this. Reminds me of when my friends belt out I'll Make A Man Out Of You in the car with the windows rolled down and we are sooo animated while singing it. @@Sidhejester
The Point of No Return- Phantom of the Opera Only Us- Dear Evan Hansen Dear Theodosia- Hamilton Little fall of rain-Les Mis There are so many other good duets that should be on this list. Like good job Mojo but there are definitely other ones that could have made the cut
They’re going by the show more than the song itself. The show show from which the song is from had to be on stage...on broadway 1st...not in the silver screen first. Anastasia was a movie first and musical second so that’s why that song didn’t make it on the list.
No Sondheim other than Priest or Maria? What about Pretty Women? How about other songs from shows? The Song That Goes Like This from Spamalot. I think half of this list is kinda weak.
Not even "Sixteen Going On Seventeen" is on the f*ckin' list!!! I HATE WATCHMOJO AND MSMOJO!!!!! They ALWAYS make BULLSH*T choices!!! Not putting Sharptooth at #1 for the Top 10 Animated Movie Villains Excluding Disney and Pixar!!! They put Lord Farquaad from Shrek at #1 and only gave Sharptooth from The Land Before Time a mothaf*ckin' honorable mention!!!!! Now, I don't mind Farquaad being on the list, but he shouldn't have been at the top. Sharptooth deserved that spot!!!!! F*CK THESE A**HOLES!!!!!
Aaron Wachs oh my gosh I agree! Like if you talk to anyone to say what their favourite broadway duets are, they say, You Love Who You Love, Suddenly Seymour, For Good, and possibly Funny Honey from Chicago if that counts 😂 BUT NO ONE SAYS YOURE THE TOP (and if you can you’re one of the very few)
No Jekyll and Hyde? 'In His Eyes' is gorgeous and 'Dangerous Game' is awesome too. And no Into the Woods is disappointing. 'Agony' and 'It Takes Two' are some brilliant duets. For Phantom I would've had 'Past the Point of No Return' or even 'The Phantom of the Opera' rather than 'All I ask of You.'
why would you have preferred either of those songs? i think all i ask of you is a perfect choice - it shows the real, pure love between raoul and christine where each of them only wants to make the other happy, in contrast with the abusive, one sided "love" that erik has for her.
@@milosmith5326 I don't prefer the relationship, I prefer the music. I find All I Ask of You too long and kinda boring. Past the Point of No Return is more musically interesting, same with Phantom of the Opera.
I told my daughter about watching the 1965 watching TV production of Cinderella every year as a kid because they showed it around the holidays. Last year she bought the DVD for me for Mother's Day, lots of good memories!
I love that two of these are originated by Idina Menzel lol. But how did "You And Me" from Book of Mormon not even get a mention? That song is one of my favorites.
I think "I still believe" is more amazing. Chris's two loves...thousands of miles away...singing to him and about their love for him. They are competeing for his love from far away...amazing...and so well written.
Talking about Miss Saigon: What about "I still Believe" ? it's completely heartbreaking because you know this can't end well for both women. Though actually in this special case the German version "Ich glaub an Dich" is even better
But, what about: Two Player Game: Be More Chill The Chess Game and What Would I Do: Falsettos Seventeen: Heathers You and Me (But Mostly Me): The Book Of Mormon
Kristin Loewen sorry, but she specifically said that the songs had to have originated on the stage. Ten Minutes Ago originated on TV. It’s as simple as that. Also, it’s a pretty mediocre song compared to other R&H hits, and the revival version, although beautifully sung, is painfully slow paced.
@@noblespirit03 It really doesn't matter that much. I respectfully disagree with your comment though. I love the Broadway version of Ten Minutes Ago, I think the sped up version of it takes away from the song. But again, this all really doesn't matter much
Here's a few other good musical duets that could've been in this list: .A Million Miles Away (Disney's Aladdin) .(I Guess) I Miss You (SpongeBob SquarePants Musical) .Waltz for Eva and Che (Evita) .It Takes Two (Into the Woods) .Alone in the Universe (Seussical)
That was the first song I thought of. But I knew it wouldn't make the list, because of the rules--the song had to have originated on stage. "I Know Him So Well" didn't originate on the stage. Damned shame, because it deserves inclusion in the top five, at the very least. Isn't it madness?
@@TheChristianaut how did it not originate on stage? I think there was a concept album first (maybe), but I don't think it was written for anything but the stage.
@@TheChristianaut but it did, didn't it? I know it was released first as a concept album, but so where JCS and Evita. The songs were still written for the stage, but the concept album let them test the audience reaction as well as raise money to finance the stage production.
Rent was not set in 1989. That was the movie's decision, and it doesn't make sense with some of the references in the songs (such as referencing Thelma and Louise, which came out in 1991). The musical never specifies. I always assumed it was early to mid 90s.
It’s definitely not set in 89 since Mark and Roger sing about ‘living in America at the end of the millennium’ so I assumed mid to late 90’s. But I could be wrong.
@@manuelorozco7760 The movie, yes, but this list is about the stage productions. They decided to set the movie in 1989. But it refers to things that happened after 1989 (like the movie Thelma and Louise, which came out in 1991), so that never really made sense. In fact, that's why they set Rent Live in 1991 instead. But the musical itself never specified.
I ADORE that song. I haven't seen "Chess," but are the characters actually together during that song, or are they musing separately? And I know Quartet is a... quartet... but what a great tune, too. :) Oh, and I like to sing "Anthem" to myself on occasion to make myself cry. I wish I loved anything as staunchly.
@@greytgreytx The two characters (Florance and Svetlana) and both over watching their love (Anatoly) while he's being interviewed on TV. You can watch Chess in Concert on DVD. It stars Josh Groban, Idina Menzel and Kerry Ellis. It's well worth the watch!
Just saying “In His Eyes” from Jekyll & Hyde is a phenomenal feat of a duet to sing. One of my favs! Glad to see “Lily’s Eyes” got an honorable mention.
@@gracehalsey9661 Yup. Most people don't know that Cinderella was actually a made for TV movie BEFORE it went to broadway. I knew that already, but I had a similar mistake because I was wondering why "White Christmas" wasn't mentioned. Then I looked it up and saw that although "Holiday Inn" was a movie in 1942, it didn't actually become a broadway musical until 2014. Where would we all be without Wikipedia? Heh
I was wondering if it was something they would have written for another show and just moved it into Cinderella but no.. can't find any proof of that. They goofed!
A lot have already been mentioned, but I love A Million Miles Away (Aladdin), Dear Theodosia (Hamilton), and like 3 other songs from Les Mis aside from the Confrontation (Come to Me, A Little Fall of Rain, and Valjean's Confession).
I love for good. In our theatre company, we dedicate that song to a girl who was a student there, but sadly passed away 2 years ago because of anaphylactic shock (an allergy reaction). Brings me to tears every time :)
I really wanted to see: Movie in my mind- Miss Saigon, What was good enough for you- Bonnie and Clyde, Agony- Into the woods, and It only takes a taste- Waitress
Broadway Life WTG on the Bonnie & Clyde shout out! My best friend Victor Hernandez played Clyde’s father before it went & on Broadway!! I still remember the day he got the call that the show was going to Broadway, we had a few cocktails that night, to say the least!! LOL
Broadway Bechdel Test (which Fun Home, surprisingly does not pass): Two female characters sing a duet that isn't about a man. It's rarer than you think.
For good/ what is this feeling- wicked Once upon a December prologue or reprise- Anastasia Slipping through my fingers- mamma Mia Alex predator- mean girls Just wanted to see how many I could name
Nice to see that the youngsters included the bench scene from Carousel and the balcony scene from West Side Story even if they were surpassed by duets from Rent and Wicked. Where is Jason Robert Brown’s jaw dropping “One Minute and a Million Miles” duet that has had about a million views on RU-vid being recorded by two of the top voices on Broadway: Kelli O’Hara and Steven Pasquale.
Suddenly Seymour is one of the most powerful duets ever should have been way higher. Also I know it's probably too contemporary for this list but... "seventeen" from Heather's anyone?
I'm glad you guys credited people like Marnie Nixon and Jimmy Bryant for their singing rather than the actors on screen. They deserve to finally be noticed.
1 small quibble. For many of us the Leslie Ann Warren (as a teenager with slightly buck teeth) and Stuart Damon version of Cinderella will always be the best version of the musical! Watched it every year on tv growing up.
As a performer my favorite duet has been Pour Jud from Oklahoma! It was a fun way to toe the line between darkness and comedy. The harmonies are pretty satisfying
My personal top 10 would be I know him so well- Chess What is this feeling- Wicked A heart full of love- Les Mis Suddenly Seymour- Little shop of horrors Old Deutromomy- Cats Tell her- 13 the musical Take me or leave me- Rent Sixteen going on seventeen- the sound of music The phantom of the opera- the phantom of the opera Somewhere- west side story
My top fifteen favorite duets: 1. For Good- Wicked 2. Take Me or Leave Me- Rent 3. Defying Gravity- Wicked 4. Dear Theodosia- Hamilton 5. Light my Candle- Rent 6. I’ll Cover You- Rent 7. What Is This Feeling?- Wicked 8. As Long As You’re Mine- Wicked 9. One Short Day- Wicked 10. Something To Believe In- Newsies 11. Without You- Rent 12. I Should Tell You- Rent 13. What You Own- Rent 14. That Would Be Enough- Hamilton 15. Dead Girl Walking- Heathers
In addition to the lyrics, the music to You’re the Top is just as brilliant. Especially the intro where instead of simply repeating the musical phrase twice, she misses it right where she sings the word miss in “...that I’ll probably miss a bar.” Brilliance. Just pure brilliance.
I applaud you for having the thumbnail be number ten rather than putting it much higher on the list to get people to watch the whole video. It shows you respect your viewers.
Great list and I'm glad you included so many old stand-bys, but I had to smile a little at #6, when you showed Natalie Wood (Maria) and Richard Beymer (Tony) "singing" that beautiful duet, since all Maria's songs were dubbed by Marni Nixon and all of Tony's were voiced by Jimmy Bryant. (I was equally disappointed when I discovered that the late, great Peggy Wood's singing as Mother Abbess in the film version of "The Sound of Music" was dubbed by Margery McKay. "Climb Every Mountain" was very inspirational, used for many events.
Phantom of the Opera title song and Past the Point of No Return should at LEAST have been honorable mentions. Also How Could I Ever Know from The Secret Garden is sooo beautiful.
Caché Fille I know!!😭 Jeremy wasn’t only in Newsies and Laura wasn’t only in Cinderella! Bonnie & Clyde deserves more than a month’s run and if I had to pick one show to bring back as a revival, that would be it!
Emma Soemer definitely!! it’s such a different and interesting story, and “how ‘bout a dance” is my go-to show off song (if i ever audition for anything again, i’m using that!)
Caché Fille Yes! It’s such a different perspective on the story, it’s definitely worth telling! You should audition again and that song is a great choice! I also love Dyin’ Ain’t So Bad as an audition piece😊
Emma Soemer dyin’ ain’t so bad is ever so slightly out of my range, tragically 😭 also, i feel like this is so dumb, but i appreciate your support of my auditioning dreams!!
