Another fun fact. Lynyrd Skynyrdis not from Alabama and they are huge Neil Young fans despite the dis in the song Sweet Home Alabama. In fact Ronnie is wearing a tee shirt with Neil Young on the cover of Street Survivors.

+Reijo Piippula i really don't know why people think the Beatles are the best rock band when they were more of a pop rock band, they had some good songs, but none of their songs can compare to: Bohemian rhapsody, stairway to heaven, child in time, etc. I can't put them in my top rock bands because their songs don't make you rock and roll,

Of course Skynyrd deserves number 1. Their songs have gone on to become cultural staples. You still hear people scream Free Bird at concerts, Sweet Home Alabama still finds radio airplay. And not to mention that Ronnie Van Zant's lyrics still hit home with people today. and he's been gone 39 years, soon to be 40.

Surprised Fabulous Thunderbirds or Molly Hatchet wasn't on here. Flirtn' with Disaster is one of my favorites. Oh well, maybe a top ten "Southern Metal" bands. Pantera, Texas hippie coalition, Corrosion of Conformity, Black Label Society, Lamb of God, the list goes on.

Coaster Haven they do have a lot of influences. Psychedelic Rock, Southern Rock, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Prog and Sludge Metal all in one band. I just really like Mastodon.

I'd have to remove the more modern bands on the list and replace them with Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, and the Dixie Dregs. Then a follow up list of modern (post 1980s) Southern Rock bands could contain the Black Crows, Drive By Truckers, and Alabama Shakes, along with bands like the North Mississippi Allstars, Govt Mule, Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies, Blackberry Smoke, Kings of Leon, or Widespread Panic.

It's all opinion but damn. Atlanta Rhythm Section isn't even on the list? Blackfoot is in the top 3, with a bullet. Honorable mention for them is a joke, everybody knows it. We all knew Skynyrd would be #1. They were the ambassadors of Southern Rock to the world like Zeppelin was to rock. But even as a cover band with only 2 original members, Blackfoot rocked the hardest and the best, for the longest. And ARS was the smoothest and slickest. Put the rest anywhere you want I could care less.

Yeah I love Black Crowes although not sure if I spelled it correct :) However I do not consider them Southern Rock, ARS however is Southern Rock. Sometimes a music style is not based on where the band originated, like they seemed to imply. Some of the best Celtic (Irish/Scottish/et cetera) was from North America or other countries than Ireland or Scotland. ARS definitely qualifies if you need the band to be from southern parts of the country. They aren't from Atlanta, but Doraville, but still Georgia and southern. Yeah, they play some Southern Rock, however they also play other genres, and are better known for hard rock, but also play blues rock and are a great jam band...

If you’re into southern rock y’all shoud check out this band from Natchez Mississippi called Bishop Gunn. They’ve been around for about 2 years and they’re really good.

Because Ronnie was so much better somgwriter than Greg and Dickie combined Skynyrd were a song band and they had the albums to prove it

I was born in Florida, and I love the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Surprisingly, a lot of people, that I know, hate Southern Rock. And they call themselves Floridians!!!

Yeah! I resemble that remark, though technically Maryland is considered a southern state, though some southerners say not, Maryland, My Maryland was a song sung by southerners during the civil war. Anyway, I am more Northern as far as culture, but as a Northerner this list sucks.

Riddickisawesome101 I totally agree with you. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s awesome, but Allman Brothers will always be my go-to Southern rock band. Edit: okay, I take that back. I still love the Allman Bros, but Blackfoot is my new favorite band.
