Lost Cities is still astounding all these years later. How Dr. K managed to fit so much tension and angst into a game with like 4 rules is beyond me. And then he did it again! (ST/BL)
@janetmichel3009

It sounds a little like canasta from how he discribes it.
@blarneystone38
@blarneystone38 Год назад
@@janetmichel3009 Hmmm. I never thought about it that way, but I can see it. It's very rummy-like in the way you are drawing one card, then playing/discarding one card every turn, and the other player can take your discards. You also potentially lose points for starting a certain group, like canasta. However, most of the tension comes from the fact that every card you place potentially rules you out of playing others - if you go from red 1 to red 5 you never get to place red 2, 3, 4.. This definitely gives it a unique feel.

Nice top 10. I also have a wife who likes lighter / shorter games I'd put 1. Carcassonne (amazing with 2-3) 2. Patchwork 3. All Creatures 4. Santorini (it would be my number 1, but the others hit the table more) 5. Lost Cities 6. Tiny Towns (not best with 2, but still good and she loves it) 7. Red 7 8. Kingdomino (best with 2) 9. 7 Wonders Duel 10. Calico

Added a few to my to-buy list after this! My additions are: Star Realms - a very streamlined deckbuilder that's quick to set up and understand Forbidden Island - This was the first game I played with my wife and it's a great intro to Pandemic-style co-op mechanics. Smash Up - Easy to set up and play, but every game is different because of the different combination of factions you can play with Truffle Shuffle - Rules are simple, but you're always in edge as to whether you should cash in your cards or hold out to get a bigger set, while hoping you're opponent doesn't get the card you want

I’m not sure what “improvements” means. I do think that overall *Desert* is the “better” game of the two. But I really like some simple elements of *Island*, and its tight little design. Just because one game has more things going on / to do, it’s not an “improvement” (I’m 100 % sure you’ve witnessed this in the hobby; also just think about Jon’s (this channel) take on buying expansions). All else being equal, in mixed company I’m often more likely to suggest a game of *Island* over *Desert*. I love them both. But can someone convince me to give *Sky* another chance? 😅

Although more fun with more players my husband and I love Lanterns. It's a tile-laying game. Every tile has one colour of lanterns facing each direction. Every players gets a card of that coloured lantern that points in their direction. You can get bonus cards by matching the colour of an adjacent tile. You need the cards to buy points. 4 of the same colour, 1 of each colour, etc. The earlier you buy points, the more points you get. It sounds quite complicated when you have to explain it without the pieces but it's actually quite simple and so much fun!

As honorable mentions, I'd suggest Santorini and Tiny Towns. Santorini's like playing chess but with only 2 pieces, trying to outmaneuver your opponent while moving to the victory point, but what keeps it interesting are the god cards, which make the game asymmetrical, changing how players can move or even win. Tiny Towns is a city planner with a Tetris vibe, as players place resources down on a grid, trying to form certain patterns to clear up the board and build a building. What makes it interesting is that on each players turn, they get to choose what resource everyone has to place on their grid. This means players have to make strategic decisions on what to call, as fouling up your opponent's board is just as important as trying to build yours. The game also keeps up replayability as each building type has several different versions (you only use 1 per game) with different patterns and ways they earn points.
@actualol

I actually think Res Arcana is also a great game and plays best at 2 players from my experience. My partner and I have played it approaching 30 times already and we only got it at the end of August!

Lots of great suggestions here. I have (and agree with) about half of the ones listed, so I'm sure the others will be just as good. Time to add them to the Christmas list!

Great list! And great video, as usual. I love Arboretum and Fungi, but haven't played most of the others. Two others that my partner and I enjoy playing are Glasgow and Botanik.

Nice list! With my husband we like to play Rune, Azul and Calico.

Great list. Own most of them. I would bump one in favor of Fox in the Forest Duet. I personally think it's the best weeknight cooperative 2 player. Personally I'd probably add Targi to this list and just make it a dozen 😉

I would add curious cargo. Tons of fun and complexity packed in a cute little fairly lightweight game for two!

There's a new Sherlock Holmes game, it's Eldritch Horror themed! I've been looking at it in my FLGS for the past few weeks.

My wife and I are into Ark Nova now. It can be a fast two player game for the amount of crunch each game gives. Right now we play a two player game in around 50 minutes. If both help pack and set up add only 5 minutes onto that. I highly recommend it for couples.

Our top 10 couple list. 1. Star realms. By far. It's nowhere near close no. 2. Especially on holiday pass and play on the iPad. 2. Pickomino. 3. Can't stop. 4. Lost cities. 5. Yahtzee 6. Everdell 7. Terraforming mars 8. Quest for El dorado 9. Castles of burgundy 10. Bruges Honorable mentions: underwater cities, caper Europe, 7 wonders duel, hanamakoji, heat pedal to the medal (works surprisingly well with 4 A.I.'s

I miss 7 Wonders Duel on this list. And I would add Riftforce (if you want it a little brainier) and That's pretty clever. And of course Mindbug a quick and dirty little card game for two.

I really like Onitama, but I would choose Hive over it. Hive is very quick to learn, but can be very challenging as well. Nice vid 👍🏻

Lost Cities and Jaipur are my usual recommendations! But I recently played Watergate and was almost angry at how good it was despite the theme. Great thing to take a chance on at the board game cafe!
