Music is sound, plain and simple. Believe it or not, but not every one plays an instrument so technique doesn't mean shit to them and it shouldn't matter unless the actual song sounds good as well. Is it better to have a technical song with no feel or just a jerk of session on guitar just showing of. Music is not a math game, its about creating a sound that resonates with some one. Should some one just resent what they like because some elitist fuck says so. fuck you. Techniques are but tools to get a certain sound, nothing more. If you are technical for the sake of being technical whats the fucking point? Oh yeah you can play well, but cant use your own skill to make something worth listening to.

Varg definitely is an underrated talent, but Tony Iommi still is 'the' riffmaster.

The right hand is pretty much doing the same thing all the time. I think the lack of rhythmic dynamics is holding Varg back from being a better riffsman.

I recently discovered Burzum and now I can't seem to be able to listen to any of the stuff I liked before. Any explanation to this?

Stvn2337 Aha, cool. I gave the song a listen, it's really good. I'm somewhat of a session/live guitarist too but I prefer doing my own stuff as the metal scene in my area is rather dead. It's not a bad thing having a solo project, though, you could have some future success with one.

Agreed. Best riff Varg ever made was the Det Som En Gang Var one in this vid IMO, I even think Det Som En Gang Var has the 2 best Burzum riffs, there is another great riff somewhere at the end of it. Probably because I like not only the riff itself, but also the tuning. I always have something with classical thrash/death riffs especially if they're made slower to fit into black metal.

Every riff is a killer one, and it just sets the darkest mood for me, but in a beautiful way. I guess like Norway itself, dark and beautiful. Doesn't he tune up?

Strange thing about det som engang var is that all the riffs in the song are too simple yet so brilliant at the same time.

On a little sidenote, I suspect he uses all 6 strings on the last hit on the recording (3-5-5-3-3-3 instead of 3-5-5), but honestly the latter sounds better with proper quality recording.
