I also started some char cross steers on feed. Over 4.6 lbs per day for the first 30 days. No implants. Whole grains being fed. Amazing. Especially when I took a 5 percent pencil shrink when I weighed them. And they had only really been on full feed for about 10 days. Great feed converters. Fast gaining cattle are the only way to remain profitable.

You forgot to mention 2 popular breeds in your list. Blonde d'Aquitaine which are a heavily muscled French breed renown for producing efficient, high yielding beef carcasses. The Blonde sire is known for producing small slender calves which grow rapidly once born. The calves have a calm temperament, are fine boned, and develop a heavy muscle pattern. Blondes are a terminal sire best suited to mating with British/ British-cross females like Angus, Murray Grey, Shorthorn, Hereford or their crosses. Calves perform well both in the baby beef market as well as the store/feeder market. AND Maine-Anjou which boasts the benefits of weight for age, temperament, ease of calving and feed efficiency. The Maine-Anjou is a favourite when cross breeding and proven to improve ease of calving while increasing growth rates and breeds better temperaments. Both breeds are great sires for cross breeding over British breeds. Otherwise thanks for a great presentation.

There are a lot of variables for producers that aren't covered in breed statistics. As a cow/calf producer I look for calmness, mothering characteristics, fertility, rate of gain, and longevity. Rate of gain is not the top trait I use to determine what breed I use. Every rancher has their own ideal cow traits that suit them and their particular enviroment. What breed works where I ranch may not work in South Texas and vice versa.

Like Angus breed is luxury brand. 😅
@cdjhyoung
@cdjhyoung 3 года назад
Branding at its best. But Angus cattle also have a above average feed conversion ratio so in the right environment, they are a profitable animal to raise and market. The down side is they have a limited range of temperature zones they thrive in -not too hot and not too cold- and they need good quality pasture and baled hay. No western scrub grazing for them. Genetics help also. That breed and its breeders have done a really good job of bringing a carcass to market that has the right amount of marbling for the American consumer.

@cdjhyoung
@cdjhyoung 2 года назад
@@Person-ej8vd My father raised two strings of beef cattle when I was young: he was herds man for a Hereford operation and raise Black Angus as his own on a separate property. That was in the 50's. You literally couldn't tell the difference between the two breeds if not for the color. Angus had a huge push to adjust the breeds genetics and really changed that breed with a lot of improvements in muscling, body height and marbling. Herefords came late to the genetics game and are trying to play catch up on body structure. Your comment on how pure bred the animals are is something that has always made me wonder: We left the cattle business to raise hogs. In that business, it makes no difference what the breed of the market hog is (within reason). Three way breed crosses is the normal operating system for most successful hog growers. It has been found that cross breeding improves fertility, body structure, rate of gain and feed conversion rates in hogs. I wonder why the same isn't true for beef cattle?

I’ve been away from the beef business for nearly 40 years when commodity market prices fell to below $0.20 per pound due to an over supply via the govt. cow kill program that basically provided corporate welfare to dairies at the death of beef producers. The daily weight gains depicted here have got to be best case scenarios with a direct correlation to higher production costs. Still impressive. We ran Mexican Corrientes on steep Rocky inhospitable terrain with very little biomass and water with average daily weight gain of about 1.6 to 2.0 pounds over a 5 month season and that was just grazing weight; not sure what their 60 day feedlot gain was because we sold them off at gathering to Harris Brand and various other smaller meat packers of the time.

The one that yielded the best was a red charolais. A grey from the group did about the same. The poorest gainers hit a wall first. And were hence harvested first. 66 percent was the lowest lean meat yield. Free range cattle grow more muscle and less fat. Resulting in high l m y. If you have even 10 acres. Buying whole grains and proper supplementation will give you a product that you cannot buy anywhere. Do not bother with cow calf. Buy the best 1000lb steers and feed them out. Good returns if you get them sold in a box.

It all depends on how they are raised and how they are fed. In my country (Uruguay) we have the 2nd largest Hereford rodeo in the world. Since organic meat is sought without the consumption of grains, hormones or antibiotics (they are prohibited). The animals only eat grassland year-round, and the Hereford is best suited to this type of management.The world is looking for the natural, and Uruguay is not only providing it but also achieved a zero balance of greenhouse gases.

I like this video. The animals selected to represent each breed are exceptional representatives. The information is interesting. BUT, Don't consider ADG when selecting your breeding stock. Far more important is your location, weather, type cattle operation, local market, acreage, it's capacity, grass, grain, etc. If you're down in the southern US coastal marsh you better be raising Brahman crosses. If you in up in North Dakota. you'd better have long-haired European breeds in your lineup. If you're on rocky hot dry ground maybe some Longhorn influence. Average Daily Gain don't mean squat if you can't get a calf to market! I've bought beautiful bulls from other states only to see them fall apart in the heat of SW Louisiana trying to endure clouds of Mosquitos and mud. Pay attention to what your local old timers are doing. We've tried it all. There is no magic breed. Smaller breeds in the hot south. Bigger breeds up north in the cold. Cross bred cattle are better commercial herds than full bloods, as a rule. Nothing more fun than raising cattle. Good Luck.

@ProfitableAgribusinessIdeas
@ProfitableAgribusinessIdeas 3 года назад
@brunodestouches8802
@brunodestouches8802 3 года назад
