I love how Season 0 was so messed up, but had one of the happiest theme songs of the entire franchise. I love to go back once a year. Most of the punishments from Yami Yugi were just illusions. Even the guy with the watches. The only real punishment from what I can recall is the one he did to Seto. Only the tiger one is real. Everything else is just an illusion. Yes the curator died, but the illusion induced a heart attack. The psychic didn't just pass out. His scam was revealed and his life was ruined as a result. He deserved worse, but he didn't just pass out. I forgot the guy with an insane amount of luck. He got electrocuted. Not enough to kill him, but it apparently shocked all of his luck away which makes me almost wish he would try the stunt he pulled when Seto brought him in to beat Yugi. The guy took a 6 round revolver and loaded it with 5 bullets for a demonstration of how lucky he was.
I might be mistaken, but I think Mokuba's punishment was just Solid Vision holograms meant to mentally break someone, not actually kill them. It was intended to make Yugi suffer the same mental punishment Yugi put Kaiba under.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing that. It would be interesting. (Sorry if I sound terrifying with this comment. If it's too disturbing, I'll delete it immediately.)
"Sevens is the weirdest Yu-Gi-Oh series." Me, A YuGiOh OG manga & Season Zero veteran. "Sure, guys. Definitely not weirder than yoyo gangs, going on a date with a mad bomber, Joey playing a game show that could've actually killed him, Kaiba hiring military professionals to kill Yugi's group."
My favorite one is when Yugi played ice hockey with explosive pucks and killed a man. They got into such dangerous contests just because of some spot for a school festival.
Mokubas penalty was the "experience of death" penalty where the recipient is given the illusion that they are being killed. Yugi used this on kaiba after their first duel and kaiba replicated it with solid vision in death t
The most and crazy WTF moment I can think of in Season 0 is when Yami Bakura stabbed his hand in the final episode. And I agree with you, "Anzu Chloroformed" was definitely the most WTF moment in Yugioh Season 0.
Also don't forget that that "fake psychic" also almost killed Yugi and burn down the house of one of his own students just to proved that his prediction was right
Let's not forget that in the anime the only reason why Kaiba put Yugi and his friends through the terror of Death-T is because he was pissed that the best he could do against Yugi in a duel was to force a draw. In the manga, Kaiba did it because he was suffering prom PTSD from Yugi inflicting a penalty game on him where he experienced being slaughtered by monsters over and over again, a punishment that Yugi inflicted on Kaiba simply because he didn't love his cards.
Season0 Kaiba being vengeful over a cardgame is pretty funny until one realizes that he straight up intended for yugi's entire friendgroop to be killed too.
You're not alone on the clock punishment one. That scared me as a kid and it made me stop watching the show. After seeing some of the clips of it in this video, I can see why it disturbed me so much. His skin ripping off and revealing clockwork in his body is just gross.
This was actually the only thing that gave me legit ptsd from this show. Which is weird, considering.. everything else. But that moment felt so much more real, my hands still go numb when I think about it.
I almost rearranged the top 3, but yeah I can’t ignore number 1 with the fake psychic. He really needed the severe punishment. However, the most disturbing was actually the tiger one because of Anzu was put into a mental suggestion that caused her to freeze in place.
Anyone else wonder why they changed the side character cast in the anime version and had Ribbon actually accept Honda/Tristan’s confession? In the manga she was just a one chapter side character set up as Honda’s crush. Then she turned down his confession at the end of the chapter, leading to the birth of the 3 yu-gi-bros.
Because the anime staff wanted to add a character and while reviewing the manga, they liked Miho, which is why they show Honda liking her, which comes from the manga.
Ngl the terrorist bomber is actually a bit worse in the manga because, I swear to god, Anzu/Tea actually got on the Ferris Wheel after hearing about this terrorist in an effort to lure Yami Yugi out.
Yes And I Believe Yugi Was Unknowingly Guiding Atem To The Afterlife Like When The Puzzle Was Complete Yugi Started His Guiding Journey To Teach Atem The Love He Used To Have With His Elders And Letting His Anger Out Via Yami No Games
Ah, season 0 is insane. I remember reading the manga and yikes, haha! ♥ Great video, Dylan! I always enjoy your YGO videos (mostly the YGO DM videos as I grew up with it). Kaiba was CRAZY in the manga. Absolutely insane, but not surprised as he went through a lot. If I'm not mistaken I think Gozoboro did much darker stuff to Seto and Mokuba in the manga (but I may be remembering wrong).
One thing, that I am surprised didn't make this list, was at the beginning of the Eileen Rao episode. She had a game, I think it was Raijinhai, against a professional athlete, I cant remember if he was a football player or whatever. She wins and then the next thing you see is the athlete being loaded into an ambulance with one of the most horrifying leg injuries you will ever see.
to make the #1 spot even worse, literally stated in the season zero anime and the manga. Tea was worried that her job at the resturant was in jeporady cuz she was 16 and not old enough to work there. It's stated multiple times they are in high school in both the manga, season zero, and the official anime confirming everyone is under 18. Kokorano was trying to do this to a 16 YEAR OLD GIRL!
It's actually one of my favorite seasons. It was the 1st anime that gave me a jumpscare of a horror anime I really like. Imagine this in madhouse animation.
Seto Kaiba = Byakuya Togami :) Also, that doctor deserved far worse for almost killing my favorite angel (definetly my #1 most disturbing moment on a personal level as a fan)
I wonder how dark all Yu-Gi-Oh would if card game didn't catch on and still manga was become popular or if it was targeted for mature audience. Or just Yu-Gi-Oh still would become less dark overtime and overall would be kid friendly.
Can't. Because there would be no other seasons without the card game and the only reasons the spinoffs (Assuming this is what you meant by seasons) exist is to sell the card game. Yugioh was made as a 1 time story.
I've said this before, but they really should remake this series with the standard Yugioh animation seen in every other series but Sevens. Just to give it that good facelift it really needs.
4:57 It actually is supposed to Represent his own Sins Which means, these Zombies are actually Illusions of people he Intentionally Killed as their Doctor
I loved Yu-Gi-Oh 0. The whole “Why Yu-Gi-Oh 0 Is” series on RU-vid is amazing . My 4 favourite Yami No Games were 1) That flower pulling game Yugi played with that model . To be fair , Yugi DIDN’T specify to pull from the bunch . Just from the flowers the model had 2) The glass jigsaw puzzle with the teacher 3) The balloon bomb game in the amusement park 4) The finger game in the diner with that convict 😃😃😃😃
Your top 2 Yami No Games are honestly great! I didn't feel like they necessarily fit into this particular topic, but the twist with that flower model was genius, one of my fav ends to a game of darkness
Huh... the amusement park terrorist one is one that I remember pretty well from the manga, and it's quite different. Yami Yugi is forced to play Clock Solitaire with each pile corresponding to a ferris wheel car, and (if I recall right) the bad guy actually does blow himself up. Kanekura was essentially subjected to the Weighing of the Heart, which all dead are subjected to by Anubis in ancient Egyptian mythology. The heart is placed on one side of the scales, and the Feather of Ma'at is placed on the other, weighing its sins and such. If they pass the test, Anubis sends them on their way to the land of the dead where Osiris rules, but if the heart outweighs the feather, it is devoured by Ammit and they cannot go to the afterlife.
I love the quality of the anime. The art style and quality's really unique! Of course, I'm not a fan of the glitchy green flashing and frozen video from whoever recorded it via VHS though.
I enjoy how Season 0 is touted as this bastion of really metal and horrifying things, but even Season 0 is a watered down version of the Manga. The manga was truly dark.
I was a bit disappointed that Bakura hurting his body (or rather his host's body) didn't make it to the list, then again I don't think it was shown in season 0(I saw it a long time ago so I don't remember clearly), maybe it only remained in the manga, but it was always disturbing and dark whenever he would do that, even when the manga shifted to duelist kingdom.
Just to clarify the death T 1 game mentioned in the video, in the manga the enemy are actual assassins who are given guns that look like laser tag, but if they hit a target the vest will discharge lethal levels of electricity, while the main cast just got regular laser tag guns
I just watched the darkest moments in the manga vid a couple minutes before i watched this and the fact that both in the manga panels shown there and in the clip/screenshot here shows yugi in a leisurely pose leaning on the wall during the chloroform scene instead of immediately going inside the room makes it look like yugi let it happen before calling the guy out, which makes it even darker if that we're true.
surprised that kaiba esentialy forcing an old man to live in a state of komma in horible condition just so that he can aweken him when he needs his services is not at least an honorable mention
Hey Dylan what is your favorite Game of season 0 mine would either be the duel against Yami vs that doll old man that knew Kiaba( forgot his name) or the one at the end with Bakura vs everybody
Chloroform actually has varying effects based on exposure. You could experience serious illness followed by ingestion of 7.5 g (0.26 oz). The lethal oral dose for an adult is estimated at 45 g (1.6 oz). The use of chloroform as an anesthetic has been discontinued since it did cause deaths due to respiratory failure and cardiac arrhythmias. It's likely the chloroform creep really did just straight up die since he was exposed to the entire bottle
I remember quite a few of these from the first 7 volumes of the Yugioh Manga, but there are a lot of differences.... the doctor being attacked by Zombie's wasn't a thing nor was the Tiger or the Clock game. Knowing Dark Yugi's MO, the zombies and Clock transformations were probably just illusions and not actually happening... most of his Penalty games are like that (some even having Illusion in the name). Ushio's shadow game and penalty game were different (it was surprisingly not as Dark in the manga and fit the whole "don't be greedy thing" better), there was a Terrorist plot in the manga with a faris wheel but that game was different (Yugi never even used his shadow powers there), The Death-T lever game was different (it was actually a switch that needed to be hit correctly or else the quartet all lose a hand), and the Criminal that took Anzu hostage was unnamed in the manga (and you went over the rest of those main differences). Everything else here is for the most part identical to what happened in the manga.
Some of the episodes were written for the anime and not based on any manga material. Some fit in well. Others like the episode with the doctor... Not so much.
Actually Mokuba only goes through an illusion that was meant to make it feel and seem like he was gonna be eaten/killed Kanekura doesn’t die in the anime he goes insane thinking he was being eaten by Amit (in the manga he does die though)
I feel like Kaiba during death T isn't exactly thinking straight. Because, Remember due to his upbringing Kaiba was conditioned to accoste losing with death. So the fact yugi beat him understandable sent him into a spiral.
Why would I fight you when you're right? Kawaita Sakebi is fantastic. OVERLAP from Duel Monsters is second best, and maybe S H U F F L E for third best?
The number 4 pick might be deeply disturbing but imagine if it was your first ever episode of season zero like it was for me. (It was the first one youtube recommended me)
Hell, with Fullmetal Alchemist, the original 2003 anime is far darker in tone and more brutal than Brotherhood or the Manga. Even with Season 0, even though it's darker than any Yu-Gi-Oh anime to follow, the original Manga is still the darkest and most intense piece of Yu-Gi-Oh related media
Most Old school Yu-Gi-Oh villains were very terrible people. In fact, they weren’t treated as human beings, just monsters. Mai Mai as never a villian as much some initially a shallow girl who realized how lonely she was and warmed to Yugi and Joey. Not to mention Kaiba was a bit more of an anti hero after Yugi beat him. Not to mention Rex Raptor (who at least played fair duels, despite and maybe because of his massive ego) and Weevil (who often cheated by sabotaging the deck of who ever opponents faces, but never cheated during duels. Pegasus may have started out as his villian; but was really a compelling and tragic character who just wanted to revive the woman he loved, even then he had some honor as he did give his word to Yugi and released his grandfather and the Kaibas. Not to mention, Rafael, Valon and Alister had some redeeming qualities and were just there cause they were manipulated, due to having ruined upbringings, but were far from being terrible people. Ironically the most monstrous villians are the ones who were Pre duelist kingdom, Bandit Keith (who was an unrepentant cheater and even threatened to murder Pegasas if he didn’t give him the prize money), the Big 5 (who were greedy scumbags who hated Kaiba for rightfully putting them in their place, while using their boss as a scapegoat just to justify their own greedy and ruthless reasons),Gozaburo Kaiba, Yami Marik and Yami Bakura.
15:21 they weren't using real guns, their stun guns were set to discharge a lethal dose of electricity when it hit the metal armor Yugi's friends had to wear.
Is there a moment in this show that is not messed up? Also yeah, getting burned to death is kinda less bad than what happened to the guy here. If he actually died, the suffering would have ended. But this way, he is burning forever AND looks insane to everyone. What a great thing. Also, number 10 is the reason why I am not so sure about if all this content should be put into a duel monsters-remake. Because this is like the exact opposite of the character Kaiba is later in the anime(Particularly virtual world and the end of battle city). Mokuba is just the one person he would NOT scarr for life with his holograms.
Yu-Gi-Oh = King of Games It's supposed to be about Atem being a King of ALL Games not just cards Hence he's technically refered to as "Duel King" for Duel Monsters
i wanna watch the whole thing but the most ive gotten to is 17 and it makes me kinda sad like i wanna see it i saw it like a few years ago where did all the videos go??
