I always thought Elba's accent was terrible in Molly's game, though his performance was good otherwise, I found it confusing because his accent in The Wire was stellar, honestly forgot he was British watching that
Even better would’ve been if they made John Wayne actually do a Mongolian accent in The Conquerer. I mean the movie was already offensive enough with them trying to make him up as Genghis Khan, why not just do the voice as well 😜
Brad Pitt: The Devil's Own Gerard Butler: P.S. I love you Cameron Diaz: Gangs of New York Jon Voight: Anaconda Sean Connery: Hunt for Red October Michael Caine: On Deadly Ground Lindsay Lohan: The Parent Trap Arnold Schwarzenegger: Red Heat Robert Downey JR: Dolittle
Let's not forget Gary Oldman in The Fifth Element, yes he is one of those actors that's versatile in accents, but his southern accent is... how do I say this nicely?
Probably another dishonorable mention would probably go to Val Kilmer's Irish accent from The Ghost and The Darkness. I thought he did ok, but the accent on the other hand, pretty much just distracted the movie.
What is funny about Costner is that he makes several brief attempts at an English accent throughout the film but then drops it and starts speaking as he would normally. Also, his Boston accent in Thirteen Days was hilariously bad. It sounded like he had a hot dog lodged down his throat
Actually that 'Scotsman' in the new Scott's Turf Builder tv commercial is really bad. Don't they know what a Scottish accent is supposed to sound like?
Elba’s accent in Prometheus was horrendous. Also Shipp’s accent was just as bad as Halle’s. Both were miscast to me. Hopefully one day they’ll do Storm right.
I cringed so bad at Natalie Portman’s accent in V for Vendetta 😭 I watched the movie as a kid so I didn’t remember but I tried watching it as an adult and I could not watch the movie simply for her accent
A fact that I, an American, laugh at sometimes is that Doctor Who episodes were almost always shot/set in London or the UK. So the few times they set an episode in America (example: Season 1's "Dalek"), they would cast English actors and have them fake American accents. Most of the time they're pretty good, but there are slip ups (usually mispronunciations) that you can catch if you're listening.
I'm Scottish but the Hunt for Red October is clearly the worst accent ever by the great Sean Connery . He was a Lithuanian Soviet sub commander lmao or a Spanish dude in Highlander???
Harrison Ford should have done what Sean Connery did in _The Hunt for Red October_ -- Connery didn't even try to do a Russian accent he just stayed with his Scottish one through the entire film
Go to Wired’s yt channel. They have a section called technique critique and one of the recurrent experts is a dialect coach. He analyzes various accents and voices in actors and is pretty entertaining
I haven't started watching the video yet BUT if Lindsay Lohan is on this list for "The Parent Trap", then I know this list is suspect! (you people can't seem to stop picking on kids-whose accents were way better than many adult actors' accents)
Honestly, Dwane Johnson's New York accent in Jumanji 2 was not doing it for me. I thought he was still great in the movie, but his Danny DiVito accent fell flat. Awkafina on the other hand nailed his mannerisms though.
A London accent? People from all over the globe have made London their home for hundreds of years, bringing with them their rich accents, the same can be said for most countries in Europe and certainly every state in America - sit back, eat your popcorn and enjoy the bloody film
Tbh after taking a dialects course I can say that it really depends on who your coach is for the accent as much as it depends on if your mouth is willing to move that way. Southern Accents come to me easy, because I'm from the USA and my mom is from the south, where as things like Received Pronunciation (The Queen's English) and other accents of the British Isles, well I'm always going to be a bit atrocious at.
I just watched Moonstruck for the first time just now. Nicholas Cage cannot do ANY accent to save his life! He's Italian for real (he's a Coppola for crying out loud) and he can't do an Italian accent?
What??? What about the detective from knives out (I know who he is I just can't remember the name and though he's a big name it wasn't a great accent).
Halle Berry should have never played Storm for the X-men movie. She's to soft and that part would've been great for women like Angela Bassett or even more so GRACE JONES but she's to old and has gotten thick over the yrs but Halle, NO! It should've been a stronger presence because Storm is the Goddess of weather and had a strong accented voice as well
I was expecting to see Tony Curtis in Spartacus. A Brooklyn accent clashed with the other actors. Not that I know what an ancient Latin accent would be.
What about David Spade in "Father of the Year"? His Boston accent comes and goes frequently throughout the movie and it's not that good when he remembered to do it. Oh...you said great actors. Never mind, carry on.
Yeah. I didn’t imagine a list of this kind without that performance being at the least covering the three first places. That big of a missfire is just too massive and legendary to give it just one miserable, little, tiny spot on this list. But that’s what makes it strangely great, too bad that’s great, and also memorable. Keanu surely knows how to make an impression, doesn’t matter if it’s a bad one, and he does it even without moving a face muscle (like he did in his first movies). Thumbs up Keanu 👍. Today, you got to make us laugh.
All are pretty cringe worthy. What's even more cringe worthy. Actual people who haves terrible accents. Not because they're trying to imitate where they are at. But because they've been around a lot of people from their travels or what part of the country they're from. It's the natural ability to imitate others accents without realizing in doing so. I know. When I lived in Illinois around E St Louis and came back home to Washington. People could not even understand me because I had this weird cross between ghetto/southern/New Orleans type of accent🤔.
I feel bad for Idirs Elba in that role (though i've never seen that movie). I respect that the directors for Hobbs and Shaw let him play the role of the villain in his normal voice (look it up of you don't believe me)
Here's my theory: in The Wire, he's covering his British accent with a Baltimore accent (which is an accent I'm personally not an "expert" in since I've never been there). In Molly's Game, he's basically doing my accent, and since I know it so well I know it's wrong. Do you know what I mean?
*Honestly why fake an accent, when you can just hire/cast someone who was BORN with THE accent u needed????* EDIT: I know, I know, movie productions are like that cuz they want money but still,,,, u could hire a big celebrity from another country to do the accent (Ex: the girl from Mulan, Yifei I think?, she was a big star in China, but is now known worldwide)
I mean Space Force hired Alexey Vybrodov (sorry if it's misspelled) to play Yuri and that's why it worked. He's a Russian actor/singer with great English.
Because they need A-List celebrities to give the movie status and attract audiences? And because among those few A-listers, there's even fewer with the accent they need? And because those actors may not even be interested in being part of the film? Or unavailable because they are making other movies at the time? Or because they want more money than you can give? It's seems pretty evident why.
@@mabellinco157 It's not even white-washing. White washing is when you take a character who was a certain race, but then make them white, but act like nothing is different. Mickey Rooney was doing Yellowface. He had to wear prosthetic make-up so he could appear to be Asian.
Hard to believe you left out John Wayne as Genghis Kahn in The Conqueror. One of the most misguided and pitiful casting decisions in the history of cinema.
@@LucyLioness100 Most of the movies he did were written specifically with him in mind so he didn’t have to try and do anything different. The Conquerer was the one time he tried something different and it backfired horribly. I love John Wayne movies ( well, besides that one anyway ) but you are right. He really didn’t have a lot of range as an actor.

“Tom Cruise: Irish accents just aren’t for him.” I would actually say, “*Accents* just aren’t for him.” He didn’t even attempt a German accent for “Valkyrie”.
His New York accent in BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY was unintentionally funny. ("Penis, Ma! PENIS!") Actually, a lot in that film was unintentionally funny. I couldn't control my laughter.
I know Hugh Laurie (Dr. House) WON'T be on here. Had no idea he was a Brit til I saw him on a talk show years after House had started. EDIT: Years earlier, on Friends, he was the guy on Rachel's flight to England that argued her and Ross "were indeed on a break"
British actors, and a few Australian actors along with them, can nail some specific accents because unlike Americans, they get more exposure to movies/TV shows that are from the USA than we do the other way around. And generally, they take education in the arts more seriously.
