Here’s some Memorable Mentions: - The Blunder Years: Homer finds the Corpse of Waylon Smithers Sr. - The Mysterious Voyage of Homer: Homer eats the “Merciless Peppers of Quetzlzacatenango”, and meets a “Space Coyote”(Johnny Cash;RIP). - The Joy of Sect: The entire town of Springfield becomes a part of the “Movementarians”, with (ONE HELLUVA SPACE SHIP). - Bart Sells His Soul: Mostly because of the suffering he had, and the recurring nightmares he had rowing a boat alone. - Hurricane Neddy: Ned Flanders finally snaps in front of the entire town of Springfield, and we witness his most darkest secrets & family history. I’m sure there’s a lot more that many Simpsons fans will be more than happy to share.

That Grimes guy apparently had a son and intended to "avenge" his father, and Homer trying to remember last day, comes to believe he hit Marge.

A few I can think of… Bart The General- where Bart dreams of being killed by a giant Nelson, then he’s given a cupcake by Lisa in his coffin. Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder- Homer goes to top of Springfield State Building to jump and end his own life. Darkest scene is there’s an entire line for jumpers. He is saved by Otto who was bungee jumping and led to one of the funniest scenes when he goes to multiple underworlds including the Fortress of the Mole People Also in Cape Feare there’s a great scene where Homer sneaks into Bart’s room with a knife asking if he wants some fresh cut brownies. When Bart tells him he’s on edge he comes back and says “how do you like my new hockey mask and chainsaw?” 😂

What I appreciate most about the death of Maude is that, while on paper her death is "comical", in the episode it's played seriously, even the music is mellow, and no one makes a snappy remark or joke after she's hit. And in the next scene, we see the family preparing for the funeral and it's quite somber when directly discussing Maude and the rest of the family. Then there's a 21 t-shirt salute and we're back to normal nonsense.

What about the Season 8 episode "My Sister, My Sitter"? Honestly felt quite dark and intense how Lisa tried to wheel Bart to hospital in a wheelbarrow after he deliberately knocked himself unconscious and broke his arm out of spite. Particularly the climax where Bart rolls down a hill while still unconscious into a muddy river and Lisa slides down after him. Only to get exposed by the public who think she's killed him and trying to dump his body. Though Maggie locked in a cat carrier sort of cracked me up😄

One of the darkest moments for me was in the S1E4 episode "There's No Disgrace Like Home"; this is the episode where the Simpsons go to therapy. There is a scene where the family is leaving the company picnic. Marge got drunk, Bart almost upstaged Mr. Burns and runs after the swans, Lisa swims in the fountain; Homer was embarrassed. He sees this family being nice towards each other and as they drive away, they go towards the clouds as if they're ascending to heaven. Homer then turns to his family an they've taken on a evil appearance. They tell Homer "You belong here", "Room for one more" and "One of us"

I can't believe y'all didn't have The Boy That Knew Too Much. Skinner pursuing Bart is terrifying. The bit where Skinner is climbing up the cliff is bad enough, but when he's on the other side of the stream and just starts walking til he's completely submerged, then keeps walking until he has totally surfaced freaked me the hell out when I first saw it and still makes me uncomfortable. Yeah, I get that it's a parody, but that doesn't really matter.

There was the episode where Homer, Bart and Skinner's mother teamed up to make Skinner think he'd murdered his own mother. That was cruel and dark. And the episode where Bart and Skinner threaten each other with allergens.

Frank Grimes was supposed to be a “what if a person from the real world appeared on the Simpsons.” Maude’s voice actress wanted a lot more money than she was making, even though she didn’t do as much as the other voice actors, so they tried replacing her but ultimately just killed the character off.

'The Strong Arms of Ma' episode has some quite dark moments. Marge getting traumatised after a robbery and becoming agraphobic as well as her steroid abusing self assaulting Homer sexually and beating up all the patrons at Moe's

I'm 38 - so I literally grew up watching the show with my parents; some episodes they would say were to adult and my sister and I had to go to bed. Sporadically watched it through my teens and 20s and have just come back to it now. Favourite episode is "Lisa's Substitute teacher" and my perspective as an adult has changed - Marge is the best!!!! She is the hero of the show for me.

"Boys of Bummer" was dark, and not in a good way. Bart misses an easy catch and chokes a baseball game, and everyone in town turns against him for it. The town forgives him later on and does a do-over of the game, but still...

That episode where Homer decides to force Bart to kill some animals because he thinks Bart is gay and that will fix him. Arguably the tone I took for this comment makes it seem darker, but that's essentially the plot of Season 8's "Homer Phobia" lol

I actually have an idea fir a stiry where the Babysitter Kidnapper returns and kidnapps Lisa, upseeting Bart and aftet going down a path of depression, he then becomes desperate and determined to save her, even getting some of their other friends to help him. Lisa isn't having a good time either, as she is tortured by the Babysitter Kidnapper in various ways, but barely keeps hangs on to her will and sanity. Eventually Bart rescues Lisa and the two have a tearful reunion, with the scars of the event being refrenced in latter stories. That is a fan idea I have.

Homer tries to kill himself again in Season 11 Episode 6 Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder. Its nowhere near as dark as Homers Odyssey but still unsettling. As he begins to sing The End by the Doors "weird scenes inside the goldmine" he proceeds to jump off a Skyscraper only to be saved by a Bungie Jumping Otto...
