Sorry mate but just think about where 'YOU' would prefer to be if You were the said sniper. Two choices -1st choice - Roof top sniper has a purpose built rifle and scope, unlike your average 'cannon fodder' soldier who gets a rifle which will quite probably be as old as him! You will normally have support from a fellow soldier, the spotter, He will kindly explain to you where the rounds you fired, struck and help secure your position, thus allowing you to keep eyes front ' at all times. Your effective range and field of fire are all predetermined and measured. You conceal your firing point, lay up and wait for targets to cross your line of fire. It's highly unlikely that snipers ever bump into enemies on the ground. 2nd Choice - Infantryman, marine or grunt - the guy's whose world is changing by the second as they patrol through the towns or across the landscape, fighting hand to hand combat as you systematically clear enemy held positions.You can die in a multitude of ways, from a multitude of directions. You see, smell and wear the horrors of war like nothing could ever prepare you for. Every obstacle becomes a fire fight. Running about in full combats and body armour, sweat pissing in your eyes and targets appearing and disappearing into the shadows. Lying on a roof as targets appear to your front would be a doddle compared to clearing the enemy positions in hand to hand fighting.

So when you say that the 'sniper is the underdog in combat' I totally disagree. Based on what little knowledge/experience I have and purely by it's definition, 'Sniping' it puts you behind cover and concealed, 100's of metres away from THE threat. Sounds a damn sight more attractive a proposition than being a Grunt y'know! Maybe an idea if we look up 'what is the life expectancy' for a sniper and a marine/infantryman in combat (during the Second World War and nowadays), and see if it varies by much.

I completely agree, the gun in the picture would make a very poor choice for a sniper, seeing as keeping your cover is your #1 priority. For example though, say you are posted a quarter mile away from your targets, hidden in some brush, and you needed to kill 3 people, and you're the only ones around for miles. All you have is the gun in the picture. If you kill all 3 targets before getting detected, well.. you're pretty much a sniper, right? When I think of sniper, I don't think of the type of gun they use, I think of someone who can pick people off without getting detected, regardless of method. There are always 2 ways to look at everything though ;)

Modern weapons allows for longer range and greater accuracy. without it you would struggle to remain undetected and delver accurate fire. weapons like m40, AWM, SVD,. were built to fill such role without a question. back in wwII story was different. most marksman rifles were just adaptations of standard issue infantry weapon. The deadliest sniper in world's history Simo Häyhä have used standard Finnish pattern Mosin-Nagant rifle with no scope. But now things have changed.

Carlos, "only" had 182 confirmed kills. I read the book about his career as a sniper when I was 12 or 13, loved it. Still think of him as my favorite sniper of all time. Was sorry to read that he had died from complications of MS after his post military career as a shark fishing guide in Florida. I believe he was the inspiration for Stephen White's literary characters "Bob the Nailer" and crap can't think of Bob's son. Wahlburg played him in "Shooter" . Sorry suffering from CRS.

Charles Morris Carlos actually has only 93 "confirmed" kills. Though, for a US sniper in Vietnam, you needed your spotter and an officer to both witness and confirm your kill. Since most kills were behind enemy lines without an officer, it didn't happen often. Carlos estimates he killed 300-400. Pretty sure that most these snipers, including the White Death, didn't need that many witnesses, if any.

Striker He was definitely the best offensive sniper I've ever heard about. It's easy just to camp, and let your prey walk into your FoV. Especially if they don't use camo like the "White Death's" Soviet prey in the snow. Not that I'm knocking the "White Death." The guy's a fucking legend. But someone with that level of ability is going to rack up an insane amount of kills if their enemies use the types of tactics the Soviets did during those 100 days he was active.

Then was awarded the Purple Heart and a silver service star. But he wasn't even on this list which disappoints me.

I was thinking the same thing. Somebody screwed this list up. Snipers should be measured in the degree of difficulty in which they plied their craft. Hathcock, for a good part of his deployment to Vietnam, carried a match modified .50 Browning machine gun as his sniper rig. Imagine carrying that big sonofabitch in those jungles for miles and miles. And Carlos had style, leaving a white feather in the receiver of the rifle of his victim. He never underestimated his enemies, surviving once only by beating his opponent to the trigger by a fraction of a second.
