Dreamcast was so under appreciated, I remember some guy laughing in my face back in the day when I said I had one and they were good. 19 years later, I stand by that!
I don’t think it was under appreciated at all. It sold incredibly well for such a short life. And by the time they were reducing the price, everyone had one. It was just a horrifically unfortunate system that couldn’t stand up to the Sony lies about the PS2 and what it could do. I think there are still people who think that the ps2 has hidden “unlocked” ability that developers haven’t “figured out how to use” yet. That was always the line at the time.
Thats why we are leaders true gamers not fanboys or bandwagons that get on the train of what popular at the moment.I remeber being saving money for a car and could not resist it boom sega dreamcast with house of the dead day one, why would i need a car if i was a prisionerof that console amazing
Durable too. I found one in my mid 20's while doing demo in an abandoned house. It was buried in a mound of crap and looked disgusting. I was not into video games like I am now but took it home, cleaned it up, got cords and stuff and picked up RE code veronica and it fired right up. Still works to this day. Its funny, that system is what got me back into gaming, I quit around 16.
1. Phantasy Star Online - Amazing game and my first time online in a video game. Also the game I played the most out of any of these. GREAT GAME! 2. Power Stone 1 and 2 - Great game - Great multiplayer with friends. Played tons of hours. 3. Soul Calibur - Classic fighting game 4. Virtua Fighter 4 - Great time playing with friends 5. Virtua Tennis- Had great time playing with my dad 6. Sonic Adventure - revived sonic 7. Jet Grind Radio - Love it and want more of it 8. Shenmue - Great campaign, great story 9. Bomberman Online - I love bomberman. 10. Unreal Tournament - Great multiplayer
9/9/99 still stands as one of my fondest video game memories. Sonic Adventure and SoulCalibur blew my 11 year old mind all over the carpet. It took my mom weeks to clean up the brain matter.
Dreamcast was the last, and will likely stay that way, machine that I waited in line for at the midnight launch of the console, it was genuinely amazing how good everything looked on that console, I remember I bought NFL 2k, Soul Caliber, Blue Stinger and Sonic Adventure all that first night, seriously such an amazing system, with such an incredible library considering it's short life.
About 6 years ago my dreamcast kept restarting and dying, I couldn't let my memories die with it. So I took the time and replaced a few parts and had it working again. I still put more time in my dreamcast than my ps4 or PC. It definitely deserves a historic mention in a library.
A lot of the feelings you had are exactly what my experience was like when I got my Dreamcast (because the PS2 was sold out). I just have to say it's awesome seeing someone love gaming like you do. Great video!
After watching this I realized what sets your channel apart. You’re an awesome story teller. There’s hundreds of gaming RU-vid’s who rail off a bunch of boring emotionless facts about the DC, but can never serve the unique feeling of having a Dreamcast in the early 2000s. Your stories brought me back to 99 when I was a giddy little kid who experienced the magic of the Dreamcast just like you. Thanks for the video man
Crazy Taxi is so simple in concept, but in application it has incredible depth. With all the special moves that can be performed, along with knowing who to pick up, and when - allowing yourself to always be moving forward and performing full 'laps' around the city. Legendary game. Infinitely replayable.
Dreamcast was amazing for its time, in the short amount of time it was on shelves Sega put everything they had into the system. One of the only consoles put on the market that didn't deserve to fail.
Thank you for make me rethink in some of my best memories as a gamer and sega for make them possibles at that time. Beautifull and precious times indeed.
Dreamcast was so under appreciated at that time due to Sony created so much hype on PS 2 and Dreamcast was almost dead on arrival. It's just so sad..DC was a powerful machine and Sega in-house development teams took alot of risk to try something different from PS 1 games, just count how many great 1st party exclusive for this console! DC deserves a mini or classic treatment like NES or PS1.
1998-2001 are my best memories of gaming, but the Dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles ever. Here are my Top 10 (which changes and not in order): Shenmue Skies of Arcadia Giga Wing Evolution: The World of Sacred Device Power Stone 2 Marvel vs Capcom 2 Blue Stinger Zombie Revenge Grandia II Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future
I have more memories with Power Stone 2, the fact that the dreamcast allowed for 4 controllers it made couch multiplayer so fun! It's one of those games that need a rerelease with netplay
dreamcast is my second favorite system besides the genesis. gonna watch this later but my top 10 would be something like: sonic adventure, skies of arcadia, grandia 2, marvel vs. capcom 2, king of fighters evolution, capcom vs. snk 2, crazy taxi, berserk, tony hawk pro skater 2, and soul calibur.
1. Phantasy Star Online - Amazing game and my first time online in a video game. Also the game I played the most out of any of these. GREAT GAME! 2. My semi traumatic childhood Dreamcast Christmas: Back then I was OBSESSED with Tony Hawks Pro Skater and learning to skate myself. The Dreamcast did not seem very appealing to me since I was still quite enjoying my Nintendo 64. Then Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 got announced and was said to play and perform DRASTICALLY better on the Dreamcast… so… I had to beg for a Dreamcast and THPS 2 for Christmas that year because I was ultra hyped for that game at the time. Christmas morning rolls around and I open my Dreamcast at maximum excitement levels and proceed to open what I assumed was the game I wanted the system for. I tore it open and to my surprise I was presented with the game.. Rippin' Riders… which was a mediocre snowboarding game. I asked my parents why they got me this instead of THPS 2 and apparently they were up at the counter at the retail store, ready to purchase it and the guy at the counter warned them that the skater uses profanity when he crashes & that is why it is rated T… THIS WAS NOT EVEN TRUE! My parents were GREATLY against any forms of profanity what-so-ever and opted to put it back and proceeded to buy me Rippin' Riders… I never did get THPS 2 on Dreamcast, nor did I much care for the system & its selection of games overall. To this very day I still regularly think of this and mutter to myself… “Screw you retail guy… screw you…”
i had the same reaction with SC, i couldnt believe the graphics, it was clear a new generation had just arrived, i didnt get that same feeling again until y saw the first gears of wars, i started remembering when i was a kid playing super mario bros on the nes, and now wow these graphics, what the hell!!!
A good friend of mine had a Dreamcast back then and plugged in a nice Sony tv, and he had Soulcalibur. Our minds were blown at the time as we'd never seen something look so good on home consoles. We'd play it everyday. Probably the biggest jump in graphics I have ever seen and I don't think I'll see this again And I gotta say : I like RE:Code Veronica on DC almost as much as RE2! It's a brilliant game, an amazing classic Resident Evil. People who love the classic RE games and who haven't played this one : I urge you to play Code Veronica! It's amazing! I played it on a VGA crt last year and the game looks soooo good and so crisp (btw the DC's VGA output is not only coll for offering 480 progressive scan, but also for providing an extremely clean signal, one of the best of all retro consoles.)
First game I purchased with the system was Phantasy Star Online and I still remember being blown away by it. It was the game that made me buy the system.
Oddly enough I just beat Jet Set Radio HD again this weekend. Weird but awesome timing! I absolutely adore that game and will probably never take it out of my Top 10 games of all time. Also, as much as I hate to admit it, I think Sonic 06 is actually what was going to be Sonic Adventure 3 but was renamed as an attempt to reboot the franchise. Oh well. I feel the same way about SA1 vs SA2 honestly. I love SA2 for its stages but SA1 felt more like an adventure in a consistent world. SA2 didn't feel like that. Thanks for the video Johnny!
#1 for me has to be Phantasy Star Online. The first time I played it online I started around 8pm and I realized it was around 5am when I stopped. There’s so much I can say about the Dreamcast. That system was special. Some of my favorites in no particular order: - Resident Evil: Code Veronica - Cannon Spike - Ferrari F355 Challenge - Quake III Arena - Marvel Vs Capcom 2 - Soul Calibur - Test Drive Le Mans - Skies of Arcadia
Great list! Dreamcast was the last system that I ever purchased on launch day. Other games I liked for the Dreamcast include: Dead or Alive 2, Rayman 2, Soul Reaver, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and NBA 2K.
My list: PSO, VOOT, SOA, Maken X, Crazy Taxi, Sega Rally 2, Cannon Spike, Bangai-O, Cosmic Smash, Confidential Mission, Cool Cool Toons, Ikaruga, Mars Matrix, Zombie Revenge, Sega Tetris, Outtrigger - the list goes ON AND ON!!!!
I remember seeing screenshots and trailers of sonic adventure and it blew my mind to see sonic in 3D. Looked so amazing. But I knew I wasn't able to purchase a dreamcast. To fill the void I bought sonic R for the pc.I needed a 3d sonic game, but that of course wasn't it. Luckily there was a new payment format available which was not dangerous of me getting into financial problems and I could get a loan and purchase my dreamcast, which I stil own to this day. loved sonic adventure 1 and 2. I adore Grandia 2 and skies of Arcadia and got fond memories of crazy taxi and shenmue 1 and 2. Even Silver.
My personal list, owning "only" 27 Dreamcast games and having played a few others through demos, friends, etc: 1. Shenmue 2. Shenmue II 3. Sonic Adventure 4. Dead or Alive 2 5. Dynamite Cop 6. Virtua Fighter 3tb 7. Hydro Thunder 8. Crazy Taxi 9. Toy Commander 10. Sega Rally 2 Honorable Mentions: Rayman 2, NBA 2K, Power Stone, Marvel vs Capcom, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Jet Set Radio, Virtua Tennis, Skies of Arcadia, Chu Chu Rocket
My Soul Calibur experience was pretty much the same as yours. I still have trouble finding games from that generation that have graphics on par with it. I happily unlocked everything that game had to offer, and am looking forward to doing it again in the future.
Tony Hawk 2 Toy Commander Skies of Arcadia Sonic Adventures Soul Calibur Quake 3 Arena (with Mouse and Keyboard) Unreal Tournament (with Mouse and Keyboard) Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Shenmue Jet Set Radio
Dreamcast was really the first mindblowing gaming experience I had with the graphics. I remember playing the sonic adventure demo at blockbuster and my jaw dropping at the orca chasing you.
Totally agree with the list overall. Even though it's super tough to get online, I still stubbornly cling to my old copy of Phantasy Star Online and my Dreamcast keyboard. LOOOOOOOVED that game. :)
Love the passion coming through your video. I have so many memories with the Dreamcast. If I had to pick a top 5: 1. Skies of Arcadia 2. Sonic Adventure 2 3. Jet Set Radio 4. Soulcalibur 5. Capcom vs SNK 2
I can't believe that it's been so long. I got mine on release day and it was the last console I ever owned. Soul Calibur looked incredible that's very true we where all blown away. The game I played the most was Tokyo Extreme which was just a simple racer but was it evet addictive. Sonic was awesome too on DC.
I wish i had the chance to try out this console in the 90s. I was reading about it in the magazines and the games looked like a lot of fun. Pretty much all the games you listed on here, i would love to own and experience for myself including the original versions of Grandia 2 and Skies..
The one system I wanted as a kid but we didn't have money. Glad I was able to play it at a friend's house though and yeah this list pretty much sums out my roster of games I loved + MVC2!
My faves were dynamite cop as to how crazy that game was! Carrier, D2, Illbleed ( running theme with the survival horror) zombies revenge, cannon spike, marvel vs capcom 2, blue stinger, fighting vipers and jojos bizarre adventure
Ecco the dolphin defender of the future was the first game i ever play, dreamcast have my age, i born in the 1998, dreamcast was my first console, and it's my favourite console of all time, i still play games like sonic adventure or resident evil code veronica or dynamite cop (the firts game i ever finished) soul calibur or house of the dead. What a great console. Excuse my bad english, i am from italy.
Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, House of the Dead 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, RE: Code Veronica, NFL/MLB/NBA2K, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1/2, Dave Mirra BMX, 18 Wheeler, and the demo discs for DoA2, Soul Caliber, Sonic Adventure
I bought a Dreamcast a little after launch. Skies of Arcadia and Grandia 2 are my 2 favorite. Jet Grind Radio was fun too. Still have the system. After the console went under games could be had cheap, so I started collecting. I have most these top 10 and some others.
HCG...I was really lost to video games from the late 80s until the early 2000s. From being poor... though friends of mine had consoles. In the last 3years I've discovered so much that I missed out on, that including the dreamcast. For me, I would have to include Armada to that list. I usually watch LP videos... not with this one. Learning how to play has been an epic journey. Love the game. Have you considered getting bad back online with the dreamcast? P.S. seaman was such a blast. One of a kind!
i played a trick on my friend i took him to the arcade to play soul calibur and he didnt now i had it at home i told him after he played it on arcade that the dc version i had at home had way!!!! better graphics he didnt believe me so all th way home a 45minute drive hes laughing at me ....then i put the disk in and wham the look on HIS face i have never to this day seen anyone look so blown away with graphics his jaw was soo far down to the floor lol good times
I was in a KB Toys and saw (and got to play) Soul Calibur. I bought the console and all the games I could on the spot. It was the best marketing ever. :)
I love that I'm so tied to this machine that just by chance I got married on 09/09/09. The 10th anniversary of this machine. Now that I'm heading towards my 10th wedding anniversary you have one job Sega! Give me that must have Dreamcast collectable!
God how many hours spent playing Soul Calibur with my buddies, having tournaments and such. I love the Dreamcast, I remember getting that gaudy orange Dreamcast shirt on launch with the system on 9/9/99..
At the time Soul Caliber set the mark for fighters...in fact it was better than the arcade running at 60 fps. This little white box is one of my favorite consoles of all time.
This machine is legendary, loved this even now 10. Phantasy Star online 9. House of the dead 2 8. Blue Stinger 7. Power stone 6. Viruta tennis 2 5. Crazy Taxi 4. Soul Caliber 3. Metropolis Street Racer 2. Resident Evil Code Veronica 1. Shenmue
Awesome video! The Dreamcast was seriously one of the most amazing things when it came out. I love the system and glad most games got to have lives outside of it with ports / remasters. Some of these are ports from other systems - We never got Phantasy Star Online to work with our router so I never got to play it online - so I just played offline which got boring =( I played a TON of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 on it as well as well as the NBA 2K games with my friend. Here’s my list though - 10. Evolution 9. Soul Calibur 8. Hydro Thunder 7. Star Lancer 6. Dynamite Cop 5. Zombie Revenge 4. Dead of Alive 2 3. Sonic Adventure 2. Gauntlet Legends 1. Shenmue (including Shenmue 2 here as well)
A console I never get to play the console died out When i was saving up for one...But i will say SA1 and SA2 looks epic dream cast wise. I think there was a nights game unsure lol
Wow, very nice list! I'm sad the Dreamcast didn't do better: it really pushed a lot of boundaries and had some of the most creative games I have ever played. So many fond memories, especially with Crazy Taxi, Soul Cali and Skies! That said though, and I can't really explain this... but my favourite game for the system was Illbleed. There's no reason it should be Illbleed. Plz don't tell anyone. THX.
Hey Johnny, I just bought a dreamcast bba and a sealed copy of ver. 2. I'm going to make a character, for the first time, and play it on those semi-populated private servers (Ephinia, schtserv?). See you there perhaps!
My top ten Dreamcast games 1. Sonic Adventure 2 2. Sonic Adventure 1 3. Shenmue 4. Grandia 2 5. Skies of Arcadia 6. Power Stone 2 7. Jet Set Radio 8. Resident Evil: Code Veronica 9. Soul Calibur 10. Cannon Spike I love both Sonic Adventure games so much I had to put both on the list. Sonic Adventure 1 blew my mind when it was released and I had asked my mom to get it for me after seeing the commercial. She said it was too expensive and that it was either she buy that or I have a birthday party. I obviously chose getting the Sega Dreamcast lol. And little did I know, Sonic Adventure 1 was the last game I’d play in my home state of Connecticut. I never knew I’d be leaving my childhood home shortly after. I didn’t beat it until I arrived in Florida. It was one of the only games I had for awhile until my grandma delivered all of my other consoles (my N64, PlayStation 1, and Super Nintendo). I also had my GBA with me too. Just my gba with some Pokémon games and Legacy of Goku 1 and 2 and my Sega Dreamcast with one game. I also have a lot of fond memories of playing Sonic Adventure 2. Since I had just moved to Florida when I was a kid and I didn’t make any friends yet, I had a lot of time on my hands. My cousin gave me his whole Sega Dreamcast collection and I had not played Sonic Adventure 2 yet and I was so excited to play it finally. By that point, I had played Sonic Adventure 1 to death. I had a blast playing through so many Dreamcast games. Up to that point, I never owned so many games. I didn’t get into PSO until it was on the GameCube and very late. When I was in college, my RA’s favorite game was PSO on his GameCube and I’d play it with him. I’d also play it with other people in the gaming club he ran. He suggested that I download Blue Burst for pc but I didn’t have a gaming pc in college and it wouldn’t run on my cheap Toshiba laptop. I do, however, play Blue Burst now and I am loving it.
