I think the dumb best decision in the Harry Potter franchise was when Cornelius Fudge and the Ministry of Magic refused to listen to Harry and Dumbledore’s warnings about Voldemort’s return. They basically allowed Voldemort more time to Prepare and they made Harry and many hogwarts students miserable through sending Umbridge to hogwarts in Harry’s 5th year.

"Nice one, James!!" The single most heartbreaking sentence in the entire franchise, so far. The weight behind why Sirius says this is so depressing. How much he had loved Harry's father, how much he had missed him. Being in Azkaban, with Dementors, to constantly bring back Sirius' horrible memories, most likely of seeing James and Lily's dead bodies over and over again. To using Harry as a surrogate James in the heat of that battle, to finally feeling free after being locked up for over a decade, to basically being on house arrest even while free from Azkaban. Feeling free and most likely at his happiest in that moment, only to get shot down and killed right in front of his godson. Knowing that he could have lived, if Bellatrix missed, 15 minutes later, they would be free. Harry sees the only true family that he had known up to that point, die.

10 - They should've just waited for Arthur and Molly 9 - Inexcusable 8 - Dumb, but he was tricked by a very charismatic young man 7 - Look across fiction and wise men often hide things unnecessarily (Obi-Wan, Gandalf, Ozpin, etc.) 6 - Despite the outcome, bringing him back alive was the right move 5 - Yeah, this was dumb 4 - Crouch clearly loved his wife more than his son 3 - This wouldn't have been a problem if the wizarding world had laws against entering people into contracts without their consent 2 - Harry tried, but Snape was not offering him any instruction and would actively punish him when Harry made progress 1 - Makes sense; Voldemort doesn't do his own dirty work

For 10, they are literally offered a better solution after the book. If Ron's parents couldn't get back as Ron guessed, they could have owled Hogwarts about missing the train and why. Afterwards, Professor McGonagall asks them why they DIDN'T do that.
@rainbowrunner1550
@rainbowrunner1550 2 года назад
To be fair, Dobby probably would've intercepted the owl like he did with Harry's letters over the summer. And even though flying the car put Harry and Ron under fire, it actually was useful. They would've been eaten alive by Aragog and his spiders had the car not been there to rescue them in the Forbidden Forest.
@strawberrysoulforever8336
@strawberrysoulforever8336 2 года назад
@@rainbowrunner1550 Don't forget, Dobby thought missing the train was just IT. He says when he confesses to blocking the barrier that he thought Harry wasn't able to get to school, not realizing he could get there another way. He probably left by that point and wouldn't have known if Harry sent out Hedwig. He certainly didn't know until around November. But yes, the car had a purpose to being used so that Aragog's children didn't kill Harry and Ron. It's one of the best features of Rowling's writing and planning - she sets up things way in advance, but everything that happens has a reason.

Dishonorable Mention: *The Ministry Refuses to Believe Harry's Story - Order of the Phoenix -Because some people are just too stubborn to swallow their pride and accept the truth sometimes. When the Ministry refuses to believe Harry's story during the trial, they do whatever they can to cover up the truth. @strawberrysoulforever8336
@strawberrysoulforever8336 2 года назад
They were fishing for reasons not to believe Harry's story. Umbridge meant that to happen - that's why she sent the Dementors there. The thing is, when Harry blames Dobby for the Levitation Charm in 1992 and Fudge disbelieves him, Dumbledore offers to bring Dobby in and Fudge literally says "I haven't got time to listen to house-elves" just to eliminate Harry's alibi for that instance. All that had to happen was for Dobby to admit to going to Privet Drive and performing that charm in an attempt to keep Harry away from Hogwarts that year. The 1993 incident...well, that was accidental magic, so I don't think that's fair to hold against him, either. Of course, the minute the Minister sees Voldemort with his own eyes, Harry is back in favour and the Prophet pretends they weren't the ones slandering him and insisting the interview that they bought off the Quibbler is exclusive.

It wasn't a dumb decision to leave Harry to the dursleys. He was left with them because Petunia (Harrys mother's sister) had the same protection that Harry's mother Lilly had when she died defending Harry. So as long as harry stayed with the dursleys the protection would live on and defend him untill he turned 17. It was a smart and well though out decision from Dumidors side.

Disagree with Slughorn telling Tom about Horcruxes, unless we are including unintentional decisions that are impossible to see the worst case scenario. After all, Tom was an extremely bright and manipulative wizard who could really convince anyone to tell him what he wanted, except for Dumbledore. Also disagree with the idea of choosing anyone but Snape to teach Occlumency. Snape was chosen because he was the best if not the only one who could even do Occlumency. He had to be, otherwise the Dark Lord would have been able to have read his mind and learn that Snape was a triple agent the whole time. Also disagree with the one about Harry letting Pettigrew live Prisoner of Azkaban. The only thing that caused that plan to backfire was that no one knew it was a full moon that night. The real dumb choice was that Lupin straight up forget to mention to everyone "Oh btw I'm going to turn into a werewolf tonight we better make this snappy or I best should just hang back" I 1000% disagree with the one about Harry being left with the Dursleys. One, Harry ain't got no other family. Two, the Dursleys home carried the protection spell which allowed Harry to stay alive and hidden until he was 17. That's why despite the Death Eaters ambushing the escape from that house they were never able to attack it because of the Love protection. That's why Harry had to live there. I think I agree with everything else though Edit: stupid choices that I think actually deserved to be on this list is less choices in the films or books but more choices by the filmmakers. 1. Being so stupid to change the Taboo scene by having the Snatchers show up out of nowhere without anyone saying Voldemorts name. Yes, Xenopholius says it, but the others who didn't who apparate away, escaping, are caught for no other reason than the villains somehow being given a Deus Ex Machina moment which is fucked up. And no, no one can say they can trace people after apparating because one - none of the kids said his name in that scene. And two, they weren't traced after they said it at the beginning of the film either. It was beyond stupid of the filmmakers to fuck that up because it's just a glaring plot hole 🕳. But the worst sin of all that makes Deathly Hallows the worst film. Changing Wormtails death scene. Spoilers film fans who didn't read the book. But Dobby who never meant to kill but only maim or seriously injure, straight up killed Peter Pettigrew and the filmmakers turned the scene into comedic relief, so much so you don't even know he just died right there. In the book Peter shows Harry mercy as he was initially strangling him and because he showed mercy, the magical hand Voldemort gifted him turns on Peter and kills him instead.

@CameronJamesPhillips

@@leonreborn1308 I agree that Dumbledore should've been the one to teach Harry, just like I stated that I agreed with everything else in this list that I didn't single out. One of those being that it was incredibly dumb of Dumbledore to keep all these secrets from Harry. The whole reason Dumbledore didn't teach Harry himself was because he kept secrets from Harry like that of Voldemort being able to read Harry's mind. But when focusing on the choice to have Snape teach Harry over any other teacher (not including Dumbledore) I disagree on that that was a dumb choice because of Snapes expertise in Occlumency. As far as we know I don't even think any of the other teachers even know Occlumency and even if they did I guarantee they are nowhere near as good as it as Snape. But yes, if we're going to ask who should have taught Harry, Snape or Dumbledore. 100% should have been Dumbledore. But if we're going to focus on who should teach Harry, Snape or any other teacher sans Albus, then Snape every day.

Protect him how exactly? when he was public enemy number one they didn't get him until he said the taboo, but the last book they had a small army outside the Dursleys or before when he nearly got kissed by demetors. Lilly was a widely known so her family members were probably a matter of public record so he got put with amongst the first people they would look for, sure he was physically safe (only in the house apparently) but even Dumbledore admitted "not whole", well what he he just dropped him off at an orphanage with the name Harold Smith and start off like a muggleborn he effectively was.

They were saved in the Chamber of Secrets because the wand was broken. Lockhart tried to obliviate Harry and Ron in the Chamber of Secrets but it backfired because it was broken, otherwise they would have no memory left and you also know then what would have happened. So it was very wise decision. They knew the future. Also it was good that Harry didn't let Remus and Sirius punish wormtail. Because otherwise, he wouldn't have got that famous and also we wouldn't have been able to watch/read the movie/book after the third part.

Not telling trusted advisors about his plans makes a lot of sense, especially the Horcruxes and especially once Voldemort comes back. Less people with knowledge means less people he can capture and gain the knowledge through torture/mind reading. This is why Dumbledore orders Harry to NEVER tell anyone about his Horcrux mission. It’s also the actual explanation for why he avoided Harry in 5th movie; he didn’t want to risk Voldemort reading his mind through Harry or using Harry to assassinate him.
@lmj2k

If you’re talking about the movies, Harry was not the one who broke the taboo, leading the snatchers to them. It was Xenophilius Lovegood who used the taboo to lead the snatchers to his house to capture Harry in exchange for Luna’s safe return. This part only happened in the book, where Harry used Voldemort’s name, leading Fenrir Greyback’s group of snatchers to them. In both the movie and the book, Harry unknowingly led Rowle and Dolohov to them at the cafe because they did not know about the taboo on Voldemort’s name. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were unaware of the taboo until Ron rejoined the group in the book. In a deleted scene, Ron mentions the taboo after their escape from the Ministry of Magic.

One thing I noticed in the Prisoner of Azkaban is the fact they could have sent someone to fetch Dumbeldore from the castle when they caught Petagrew while holding him just outside the castle instead of resting they could have sent Harry and Hermiony to get Dumbeldore and together they could have held Petagrew even after Lupin changed. I realize they wanted that touching moment to be in the movie but seriously that could have waited until Petagrew was in custody. It’s a really big plot hole. Even if they wouldn’t have made it to the castle in time they could have sent up a flare or something to alert the castle that they needed help, or have found one of the professors and asked them to go get Dumbeldore saying it was an emergency. Seriously this one scene was full of majorly poor decisions.

Actually, when Tom Riddle asked Slughorn about the horcruxes you can see that he is already wearing Marvolo’s ring, so he had already murdered his father and grandparents and turned the ring into a horcrux, as he had already killed Myrtle and turned his diary into a horcrux too, he was asking Slughorn, in fact, cause he wanted to know whether was possible or not to make 7 horcruxes without dying in the process. And I myself think this was a dumb idea by Tom Riddle, cause he practically told Slughorn what he intended to do, being Slughorn a friend of Dumbledore, it was pretty clear that Dumbledore would eventually find out about Voldemort’s deepest secret.

Dumbledore said he left Harry with the Dursley’s every year because when Lilly died, it created a charm that protected Harry from Voldemort. However, it has to be renewed by staying with Lilly’s only living relative, her sister Petunia. I’m return for keeping Harry, the charm extends to the Dursley’s. Which is why they didn’t send Harry off to an orphanage. While they definitely detest Magic, they aren’t stupid enough to deny its power or not fear Voldemort.

You missed Voldemort's dumbest decisions. First he decided to act on incomplete information. He heard part of the prophecy about the one who would destroy him and acted on that rather than waiting to gather more information about the real threat first. This led to his second and biggest blunder, deciding to kill Lily Potter, and that was the catalyst for everything that followed.

Leaving Harry with the Dursleys may be way more about keeping him hidden in plain site in the Muggle world as Voldemort kinda can't show up unannounced on Privet Drive to go kill a child without exposing magic to everyone. Also maybe it was a bit of misplaced morals of "an orphan child should be with some sort of extended family/blood relatives" rather than Dumbledore willingly leaving Harry with people who'd treat him like trash. I think we all know if Sirius wasn't wrongly imprisoned he obviously would have gone there since being with Sirius (and by extension the Order) would have been like being at Hogwarts, yes Voldemort can get to Harry but there are many a powerful wizarding adult to help protect him. Also Petunia wouldn't have put up a stink about Harry being given to his Godfather since she obviously didn't wanna raise him to begin with. Though literally anyone who knows 80s UK laws around such things as where a orphaned child must go if their relatives are alive feel free to call Dumbledore out on his shit choice.

Also, not keeping Dumbledore’s army going in sixth year, just because they had a ‘’good’’ professor again; Sirius not freeing Kreature before the order shows up to Grimwald place (if he hated the elf so much, why didn’t he do it); Harry, Ron and Hermione not trusting anyone with the truth of the tasks that they accomplished over the years (at least they could have told Ron’s siblings, and the other Griffindor boys in their year); all of the kids not learning how to communicate with each other, especially Ron and Hermione; not checking the RoR for a horcrux until just before the battle, same with the Basilisk fangs (surely Dumbledore could put one or two of them in his will for Harry instead of the sword, even if they were destroyed, Skrimiger would have had to tell him about it and the trio could have sneaked into hogworts before the school year started); everyone not thinking about Hermione’s parents safety until after Dumbledore’s death; Dumbledore not using Ligitamcy on Sirius before chucking him in Azkaban; Sirius not keeping Dumbledore in the loop about the secret keeper switch; no one figuring out that mad eye wasn’t mad eye (again use legitimatcy Dumbledore). Lupin should've taken his wolfsbane potion instead of rushing out to save Harry and his friends. #5. Harry should've just checked in with Sirius with the mirror every night to make sure he was where he was or told some of the Order of what he was "seeing." Perhaps they could've told him that his "visions" were manipulated by Voldemort. #2. Harry should've learned it from someone else, not Snape. It's a good skill to have, but he needed someone else to teach him. #1. Voldemort has shown time and again that he is VERY arrogant with an equally large ego.

So alot of the things in this list aren't really stupid decisions when you understand the context. Harry not letting them kill Pettigrew was two fold. Because killing him not only made Lupin and Sirius killers, but or also meant there was no way to clear Sirius of the crime committed. Dumbledore kept secrets because he don't want all the information in one place. For example the items he leaves the trio in his will he couldn't say why they were useful or the ministry, which was loaded with Voldemort spies, would have also known. Harry's lack in using the 2 way mirror for the ministry was because he didn't realize he even had it. Sirius never told him what it was and it wasn't revealed until after the battle at the ministry.

#8 according to the book he already knew about Horcruxes, but only wanted extra insight for if he split his soul in more than two parts. It also is said more in detail early in the final book how to destroy horcruxes, saying it needs to be hit with something to make it beyond magical self-repair, and trying to undo the process would involve an extreme case of remorse and the shock of it could destroy the fella. And that a Horcrux works inverse of a living thing. A living creature can be killed without harming the soul. But the fragment of soul in the magical container can't survive without it. And that time the diary possessed Ginny Weasley and started draining the life out of her. That's because if someone gets emotionally linked to such a thing, that soul can go in and out of that person.
