The book The Running Man would definitely qualify. The movie, though, would not. They stripped out pretty much all of the social commentary. It's scary, though, how prescient the book seems to be... The other ones on your list that I've seen, though, I agree, should at least be honorable mentions...

Blade Runner is so much closer, look at our currently technology, we have self driving cars, which will fly soon, there is one being released in about 4 years. and the electronics/computer technology, those huge tv screens, go to any sports event or concert these days. The internet, our home pc's and AI. we have robots that look nearly human, soon they will look totally human. The hunger games on the other hand? that bs will never happen.

Fuck of with 1984 already. Yes it's a good movie/book, but it's message is irrelevant to us. It's not relevant any more, that book is the product of the red scare, it's outdated. Soylent green, Aldous Huxley those things have a lot more in common with us than 1984. Minority report, soylent green, a brave new world, these stories carry messages that are far more relevant to us than 1984. Hell, Vernor Vinges Rainbows end is pretty much the world 10yrs from now.

The Road is the scariest. It's also the most likely human reaction to mass starvation and a fallen government. It took me a long time to watch the movie after reading the book. No one writes like Cormac McCarthy. It reminded me of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" the way a horrific story is so beautifully written. Read the book or anything by C.M.

I love the book (and the movie) too; however, I wouldn't classify it as dystopian, because in some sense, there has to be a control factor such as bureaucracy, technology, religion, etc. which creates some sort of oppressive system. In The Road, there are no rules any more. No one is happy, no one has security. So there's no organizing principle that keeps power in one group's hands, or at least OUT of the hands of the masses. I'd argue that's crucial to a dystopian story.
@jdice6868
@jdice6868 4 месяца назад
@@jeffbaer5851 That's a very interesting perspective. I disagree with your definition of dystopian. It needs no organizing factor in my opinion. It only need that the society as imagined in the story force the majority of people to feel frightened and dehumanized. If an organizing factor was needed, however, I would argue that this story took place in the early stages as there are already small tyrannical groups that will ultimately consolidate power and fall under a unifying rule as is inevitable. Thanks. Hope you continue to enjoy CM's works. He's the best modern novelist in my opinion. Have a good one.

@HipCovers
@HipCovers 10 лет назад
Equilibrium isn't exactly original; think Fahrenheit 451, mixed with Nineteen-Eighty-Four, mixed with Brave New World: A society is told what to think by one, faceless voice (Orwell); forms of art, such as paintings, books, and poems are burned to suppress emotions (Bradbury); and the population is controlled by a drug, which everyone takes (Huxley). It's an interesting combination, and certainly scary, but unfortunately it isn't original. The originality isn't the problem with the movie, though.

Some other ones: Demolition Man, 1984, THX 1138, A.I., The Sixth Day, Escape from NY/LA, Judge Dredd, Pleasantville (dystopian spoof of 1950s TV shows), Westworld, Running Man, and Total Recall. Terminator 2 shows a pretty hellish future, every glimpse you get seems to suck royally. Mad Max 2 is where the real dystopian vision lies, also while Earth isn't really touched on my instincts say the future as depicted in Alien would have to suck as well. My personal opinion is the worst of them all is the one depicted in Children of Men. Human society and humanity itself is irreparable decay and there is no real way to save us; we've done ourselves in. The ending gives some hope but really even if the human project succeeds, the old world will have to die off anyway and that's depressing as hell.

I think Logan's Run (which happens to be one of my favorite old scifi movies) may be one of the most idealistic (and possibly even realistic) future for our species. The only real issue they had was the unneeded, dramatized population control where they kill everyone aged 30. People always die eventually, so as long as you can manage birth rates (which ironically they do in this scenario), the population, quality of life, availability of resources etc. can be maintained at an ideal level virtually forever.

Thats why its called science fiction. It's grounded on some truth and facts. But in the end its more of a what-if scenario. Cyberpunk is generally dystopian in nature. Set mostly in a near future instead of a galaxy far away. It goes the way of what's the worst case scenario if this and that is possible and how society is dealing with it. Seeing the rapid advancement of AI and robotics, see google buying 8 robotic firms, and the frequent use of surveillance / weaponized drones from military to our civilian lives, this is more unnerving than any fictional movie or book story. Its life imitating art kind of thing

Logan's Run is certainly one of the best of all but Blade Runner should be #1. It may have not come before Logan's Run but it certainly perfects the genre slightly better and has more effect on films that follow

Is there distinction between dystopias which "suppose to be a utopia, but they failed" like "Brave new world" or "Equilibrium", or they pretend to be one like "1984" and just grim depiction of the future like "Blade runner" or "Idiocracy"?

Well, I'd also say it's pretty dystopian as well. The machines are keeping us alive, and killing us, and humans live inside a computer. Is that not dystopian enough?

William Ogle You could argue that almost every movie on the list is post-apocalyptic. Hunger Games definitely is.

Well... movies like this are actually glimpses of our future, training the young people's minds to accept the future will be like this... people don't have any idea what's actually happening... you need to wake up and see for yourselves... or else we are gone...

Shakespeare was a glimpse of our future, no perhaps it was Samuel Clemens, or maybe Jules Verne, which would be more accurate?

I've read a lot of GREAT selections in the comments. I don't know if I'd put in the top ten but one of my favorite futuristic dystopian films is the original Rollerball. Hell, its trailer is better than half the films on this list.

This list sucks... no Children of Men/Mad Max (The first one)/Akira/V for Vendetta/Equillibrium/ 1984/Brave New World/A Clockwork Orange/Wall-E... seriously you put some stupid movies on this list and ranked Hunger Games over Blade Runner.

It's not a movie, but one dystopian future I really like is the one in Samurai Jack. It's not a totalitarian police state, not a totalitarian capitalist state where corporations run the world, it's not a post-apocalyptic state of anarchy, not a state of perpetual war, and not the ultra-depressing decrepit and corrupt failing state setting either, which seem to be the main five.

We are living in Brave New World and 1984 now. All kinds of perversions have become and becoming acceptable so we can remain blind and trapped within the system. This list is horrible without the Brave New World and 1984.

Disregarding any negative feelings anyone might have about the movies themselves--and I'm not necessarily saying I have these negative feelings--the dystopian futures in Equilibrium, the Matrix, Terminator, Ghost in the Shell, and The Island were pretty bleak, cruel, and terrifying. I honestly expected the Matrix to be on this list. Anything that involves AI taking over and destroying the human race--or at least attempting to.

I think the movie Equilibrium (2002) is the darkest and most sinister. A world without art is one thing, a world without freedom of expression is another, but a world without emotion. If that happens then we are no longer human, we are no longer, organic. By then we shouldn't even have souls. If we are willing to cast aside our own humanity and freedom for security and equality, then we deserve none of the above. That's just my opinion.
